The free Prime shipping deal is over, but the price has now dropped to $20.88 plus $7.16 delivery, free with orders over $49 if you have Prime.

Yes it's an expensive mechanical pencil which is not aimed at the same market as this. Some people don't mind paying more for the build quality, feel, and design of something like this though.

This is nearly the best price so far according to the Camel (61c more).

Shipping is free with Prime, or $7.16 without.

It has their classic brass hexagonal barrel and is made in Japan.

It starts at $38+gst on eBay, and is US$21.37 on Amazon US

  • The Uni-ball Kuru Toga metal version is better, and cheaper, it even has rotating lead, every-time the lead touches the writing surface it rotates, meaning you'll never get blunt lead.

That was discussed above already, lots of info about the differences there.

  • I got into mech pencils a while back and my favourite of all I tried is the Pentel Kerry. I love the kinda daggy but awesome 70s design, love how compact it is when capped, but most importantly I just love the weight and writing feel of it. They're reasonably priced too: https://www.amazon.com.au/Pentel-Mechanical-Pencil-Metallic-…

    • Got one right next to me as I sit in a coffee shop typing this! (well swiping to be exact)

Awesome pencil and the cap keeps it going strong many years after I bought it.

I've got a 0.5 and a 0.7 and have been using them for years too. Love 'em. I actually own a fairly expensive Mont Blanc and still prefer the Kerry for writing over anything else I've ever tried. .

  • Sounds good, just bought the one, though I would have preferred the 0.7mm. Dodged the free post option as it soon becomes a monthly charge!

I have the Rotring 600 since the early 90s. I wouldn't say it's better than other Japanese brands they have different feel and really up to individual. I prefer to use lighter plastic body pencils as they are more agile and better tactile feedback. For this reason I prefer Rotring 300, it's all plastic body and metal head makes it feather weight, feels writing with almost nothing.

Another mech pencil that I like is the Pentel Graph 1000. Weight is between the 300 and 600. It has a plastic body and big brass head which throws the balance on the writing end. The slotted rubber grip result in a soft touch feel. It makes it easy to rotate the pencil when drawing to maintain a sharp tip, much better than the Rotring knurling. The knurling is not as comfortable if you are drawing 5-6 hours a day.

One pencil that I hate is the Staedler mech pencil. It's got retractable tip which makes it wobble so you have a less rigid writing end. There is a bit of play in all mechanical pencil, the retractable tip introduce even more play. Avoid retractable tips at all cost if you want precision writing instrument.

Anyway my days of pencil drawing is long gone to CAD so I nowadays I rock Uni Jetstream hybrid ink pen. They never dry out like a normal ballpoint when left roasting in the car.
