    They're getting desperate.

    • +7

I dont understand why. Prime sales have not been groundbreaking to say the least.

      • +16

It's not to do with prime (which certainly has its own issues). Its to do with their own value proposition - benefits of ebay plus are negligible.

        • It depends where you live.

If you’re in regional Australia, it’s a license to print money. The “Guaranteed Delivery” items never come on time, so you get issued a pile of $10 vouchers.

It more than pays for the membership fee, then the additional Plus sales and free shipping offers are just gravy on top.

          • @[Deactivated]: Cost of living in regional Australia is much higher than metros.

            • +1

              @Skinnerr: Huh?

Housing is cheap, food is cheap, the pay is good.

It’s a much easier life than when I lived in the city.

              • @[Deactivated]: Depends. I've lived in regional WA and the cost of living was much higher than the city. Sure big regional towns like Newcastle, Bendigo etc. would be no different or cheaper than metros.

      • I thought the Prime sales would of at least had a discount on Prime memberships to get more people on board, they missed a good opportunity.

        • They would do the numbers and see they have enough members for their supply of stock to not need to discount prime membership

          • @Danstar: If they run a discount today on yearly Prime memberships, even if it's just $10 off it encourages more users to their platform making purchases for the next year. Can't see how that wouldn't be a good move.

            • @LowRange: Like I said. I’m sure they crunch their numbers and know what they’re doing

            • +3

@LowRange: Annual prime memberships are already discounted from the monthly rate.

The bottom line is value. Crunch your own arithmetic. For < AUD$5/month paid annually, just the free shipping benefits alone make Prime worth it. Saved us a packet. But then there's Prime vid streaming included among other less substantial benefits.

Ebay plus benefits OTOH are negligable. And to add insult to injury, most suppliers I use on eBay don't support it, so why bother?

      • -5

Prime is amazon this is the ebay version. Totally different products.

        • +5

          Oh really?

  • +17

At this rate, we’ll see free 1 year trial by the end of this year.

  • +16

So sellers on eBay provide free postage to buyers (seller pays for it) and then Ebay claims it’s a perk of eBay plus 😅

No wonder it’s free for four months, I can’t imagine anyone being interested otherwise.

Should be up for one of the ACCC’s shonky awards.

    • +1

don't think seller pays for it but it is sure as annoying for the seller when the buyer asks why its free shipping last week but not this week eventho it's because their membership expired.

      • +2

You're right, seller doesn't pay for it. Buyer pays for it in the form of inflated eBay Plus prices to make it all seem like a good deal.

        • +1

No, there is something more shonky going on.
It appears that vendors who offer free shipping for Ebay plus also have inflated postage costs (eg $14 to send a SIM card).
It may be that they get that rebate from Ebay thus they earn more than if they had the 'correct' postage costs listed.

          • +2

@Wolfy: Sellers don't offer free shipping for ebay plus. Ebay provide it themselves due to a secret algorithm. But after launch, the actual number of free ebay plus listing that are not free anyway is tiny.

            • @odysseus: I just signed up to free eBay plus trial, clicked on a Nintendo Switch listing by EBGames, and I still get charged a delivery fee….any idea why?

    • +5

Choice publishes the shonky awards, not ACCC

  • +1

If you used trial before can you use this opition or only for new.

    • condition 3.4
There is a maximum of one free 30-day trial of eBay Plus per eBay member. You may not use or create another eBay account in order to take advantage of the free 30-day trial more than once.
      .

      • +11

There is a maximum of one free 30-day trial of eBay Plus per eBay member.

Yes, that is for 30 days, what is the maximum number of free 4 month trials though?

        • +2

Yes, it seems there is no maximum number of free 4 months trials specified in their current T&Cs.

          • @toasty: Cool… thanks.

    • Only new

    • +1

I think new only. The last eBay plus promo for 3 months or so, they sent me an email to cancel as they said I used a free trial before

  • 6th item on the list with the green ticks is "Free 30-day trial"
    .

    • +2

      https://pages2.ebay.com.au/plus/terms-and-conditions

8.3.1 All references to “30-day trial” are replaced with the words “120-day trial” throughout.

Seems like it just hasn't been updated.

      • +2

        copy, paste, edit.
it's always the last one that catches people out

  • Can somebody please advise if I create a new eBay account, can I link the payment with my existing PayPal account (that is linked with my current eBay)?

    • Just pay via credit card on your second account

      • +1

Thanks, but do you know if the existing PayPal will work? PayPal provides some sort of protection which my CC doesn't

        • +5

I guarantee you your CC has far better protections than Paypal does.

    • +3

it worked for me just now
used the paypal linked to my first account on the second account that i just made and WHAM 120 days free ebay plus

      • Thank You

    • +1

Yes I am on my third trial with linked PayPal, what is the worst they can do, just cancel your plus or account.

      • +3

what is the worst they can do

Charge you for this shitty service.

        • +1

Actually, the best they can do to counter their competitors is to offer you this shifty service 😁

  • +12

4 Month Free eBay Plus Trial

I hope they are found guilty !!!

  • +1

Why is ebay freaking out? the prime sales are not even that great.

    • +9

      Either is eBay Plus…

  • +5

Probably made some money on it last time by charging people who had previously signed up for a trial.

  • can we cancel right away and still get the 120 plus trial, or we need to wait till last day to cancel?
    can.

If you cancel your eBay Plus membership during the 120-day trial period, you will incur no fees or other charges for the membership. You will continue to receive all eBay Plus benefits until the end of the 120-day trial period, at which time your eBay Plus membership will end.

    • Here's the relevant clause:

"8.3.2 If you cancel your eBay Plus membership during the 120-day trial period, you will incur no fees or other charges for the membership. You will continue to receive all eBay Plus benefits until 30 days after you initially signed up for eBay Plus, at which time your eBay Plus membership will end."

It seems cancelling within 30 days will leave you with x days until the cancellation is processed whilst cancelling after 30 days will result in an immediate termination.

      • Its the other way round: if you cancel within 30 days, you only get to keep it for the 30 day period. If you cancel after 30 days, you can keep it for the full 120.

  • +4

They offer this, then they cancel it and then they even attempt to charge you.

It happened during their previous offers.

    • what? why they cancel?

    • +1

I canceled mine right after signing up. I even made sure that the auto payment that was setup over at PayPal (if you used that as your payment method) is canceled as well. Can’t be too careful.

      • It's not about me cancelling it. I cancelled autopayment, eBay cancelled it still while still on trial and charged for the trial.

      • I did cancelled immediately and disabled paypal automatic payments, but eBay sent me an invoice via email anyway - for two subscriptions! I had to call them a few times before it was sorted out.

  • +30

Don't redeem for another 2 weeks and then it'll last until Black Friday sales.

    • thank this is super pro tips

    • thanks for the tip mate.

    • Truely a 1000 IQ strategy. Thanks

    • When is black friday again?

      • +1

        29th Nov

        • damn so cant join now, must wait till 30/31 july.

    • So, is it a good time to redeem this between today (1 Aug) and next week?

      • +1

I'd wait until the 2nd. Not sure if its inclusive of today.

        • +2

Last day if you forgot to sign up. ePlus will now cover Black Friday to get extra good deals. Hopefully..

  • Thanks OP.

  • +6

This subscription was so great I cancelled it after 2 days, it's the biggest pile of crap

  • So those who had eBay plus trial, are no eligible for this?

  • Thanks OP

  • +4

Had the last 3 month trail didn't use it once…

If its free fair enough but i dont know how they can expect ppl to pay for ebay plus there is little benefit on most purchases

    • +1

I still pay shipping with eBay Plus. Maybe that’s where the Plus comes from.

  • +3

So didn't realise I must have used a trial before and now got charged the yearly subscription! Anyone got a refund successfully?

EDIT: never mind transaction was declined. Winning!

    • before signup it actually tells you if you've used the trial b4

  • can't open the webpage of signup

  • +3

I had signed up for the free trial and forgot to cancel it before the end date. Was charged the eBay plus fee. On the same day I was charged, I cancelled it & tried to get a refund but they said no. So if you sign up, don't forget to cancel!

  • -1

    That's absolutely crap

  • +1

Yea got charged and then went on chat and they tried to push all blame on me. I said I hadn’t used the service and just wanted a refund and cancellation of subscription, it was an unintended erroneous purchase. The supervisor just continued to blame me for not reading the fine prints…

    • +3

      Premium customer service

Well, you did sign up for a “premium” customer service.

  • free again

    • I checked and the currency is set up right and the account is on the Australian eBay site too. 🤔

      • +1

Try and get onto live chat and tell them about your issue, they're usually pretty prompt in getting it fixed.

        • Ok, thanks, will have a look later! 👍🙂👍

  • ah gonna sign up tommorow

  • Am still undecided whether to bother, or whether to wait until I actually need eBay Plus and sign up for a trial then.

  • So, we can just create new account with Google email dot trick, right? (Same existing email but with dot in the middle)

  • so should I sign up 31st/July or 8th of Aug? for the Black Friday deals advantage?

    • +1

But the deal ends on 7th Aug

  • ebay expert, need your help ")

i just created new AU ebay account with brand new email add. didnt link paypal - i will just use credit card when buying.
do you think it is risky if i use the same mobile number and delivery address as my other ebay account?

    • +1

I've done this with no issues

  • +2

    wohoo im officially a plus!

this should be on the top:

    https://pages2.ebay.com.au/plus/terms-and-conditions

    4 Month Free Trial Promotion
If you cancel your eBay Plus membership during the 120-day trial period, you will incur no fees or other charges for the membership. You will continue to receive all eBay Plus benefits until 120 days after you initially signed up for eBay Plus, at which time your eBay Plus membership will end.

  • I just paid $49 for the year as I was no longer a ‘new customer’ the pain.

  • +2

Thanks OP, signed up and immediately canceled.

  • +1
