  • Are people buying wireless router modem nowadays or buying modem and wireless router separately?

    • Combo.

    • +2

For people on ADSL2+ most people will get a wireless modem router.

    • -1

Combo because otherwise with separate units you have to do double NAT, or half-bridge and suffer a short outage when your IP address changes and the DHCP lease has to expire before you get the new address.

      • +7

hrm, if the modem runs in bridged mode and the router creates the pppoe session, there's no outage whatsoever, and it's not double-natting. That's how separate modem/router combos are meant to be set up.

      • Yes, but sometimes you want the modem to handle the login and not have to run a separate PPPoE client downstream, e.g. the router doesn't have it in the firmware.

        • Well… can't say i've ever seen a router that couldn't do PPPoE. :)

        • I've got one. It's old that's why.

    • +1

I've got it separate (had it this way for 4-5 years) but I would rather a combo simply because.. it saves space?

But it's been working absolutely fine.

  • Do they have this in store as well?

    • The Belkin modem/router is available in-store, as is the WRT110.

  • WOW, now this is a deal, Linksys.

  • +1

    I use separate.

  • separate is for pro users.

Combo is for people on tight budget.

You will never find a 5G/2.4G Giga Eth Modem on the market.

    • What about the Fritz!Box 7390? This is a gig ethernet and 5G, 2.4G dual band WiFi.

    • I've got the Netgear DGND3700, dual band 5/2.4 Gb Ethernet Modem Router

  • Anyone know if you can go into store and buy it at this price? I'm thinking of just price matching at OW to save the postage costs.

    • Yes you can pick up at the Paramatta shop. Let us know if your able to price match at OW? They do have a limited quantity so this may make a price match more difficult.

      • Thanks for your quick response Crownanchor.

If I'm able to grab one, I'll post up the receipts as soon as I can.

  • Quick whats a good one!!
haha I am in the market for a wireless N router with WOL to cover the other side of the house.
    Any of these suitable?

edit: sadly the belkin is a modem/router
and the two linksys's have terrible reviews of constantly dropping connections.

I currently have a linksys and can testify that the range just isn't great, seems to be okay with connections though.

Last time I bought from these tossers, they charged my credit card, and then I didnt hear from them for two months. No response to my query emails, and no updates on shipping or anything. 2 months later I finally get a call saying they had run outta stock, and want to know if I wanted a refund.

I can honestly say ive received better customer service from CoTD. Will never buy from them again.

Edit: The item was a Linksys WRT310N - guess they hadnt really run outta stock. Just inflated their price (it was $59 delivered before).

  • These seem quite old models. Looking through the data sheets & reviews, there seems to be some debate about if they are really true wireless-N. Anyone able to confirm?

  • As some of you may know I wanna hook up my XBOX 360 & Blu-Ray player to the internet without buy their own wifi equipment. I am thinking of getting a Asus RT-N12 to do this so it will connect to my main wireless modem Belkin N300. Will this Linksys WRT110 do it too and what one would be better to use?

  • i don't know much about modems but would you not be better off spending another $5 and getting a wireless modem and router in 1

    Belkin N150

    http://www.wireless1.com.au/Home-Networking/Modems-Wireless-…

Any feedback from anyone on the belkin n150?

EDIT: Google search shows its a router only. Why is it being advertised as a modem and router?

  • STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! I bought the same Belkin basic modem/router from MSY a few months ago for 60 dollars, it had horrible speed, signal strength, did not come with an adsl2+ splitter and plenty of connection issues (even after firmware upgrade).

    • -1

did not come with an adsl2+ splitter

Does it advertise that it comes with one? O_O

      • I'm sorry to say but MOST adsl2+ modem/routers come with adsl2+ splitters. Belkin is just stingy. But feel free to buy one for their crappy support and an inferior piece of molded rubbish plastic.

        • -1

Can you name me an adsl2+ wifi modem/router that comes with a splitter and costs less than $39?

        • @eug: You get what you pay for. Speaking from my own past experience with an identical product, I would say it's lower price is for its crappy support, performance and reliability. My TP-LINK W8960n was 63 bucks with an adsl2+ splitter, came with two detachable external antennas, has excellent coverage around my home (and remains excellent upstairs too; unlike this Belkin basic modem/router i used once, which had very low signal upstairs and kept on connecting/disconnecting). AND, MUST I ADD: PLUS Postage, which depends on where you live; i.e I live in melb and postage to that costs about 11 bucks PLUS 39.95=50.95, I rather add 12 more bucks to save me the effort in waiting and get myself a more reliable product from a nearby computer supplies shop.

        • well there you go. Belkin aren't stingy, they're just giving you what you pay for. :)

  • Something dodgy here. The deal says it is $35, but when you follow the link the price has magically changed to $40.

    WTF.

    • WRT110 is $35, the Belkin is $40, when adding the Linksys to the cart the price is $35, cant see where the issue is.

  • Is the WRT110 definitely supported by DD-WRT? And if so, link?

      edit
Oh, you answered your own question already lol

      • Wonder why original post has "a Linksys router that supports DD-WRT"?

  • +1

F**k it, i bought the Linksys WRT110 only because i saw the OP said it can support DD-WRT firmware. Should've done the research to confirm, thanks to you Crownanchor now i have an useless router.
