Dont have any experience with yeelight. Does it need a hub or works over wifi only?

    • +2

Does not need a hub. Works just with wifi. I have two and works well with google home.

      • Thanks!

        • +1

But does require Internet Connection for the App to work unless you have your own Smart Hub to manage it via Local WiFi. My internet was down for a few days and no way to manage the bulb! They do however remember last setting so can just turn off and on using the power button whcih has my preferred colour saved.
Wish they were like LifX bulbs that do not require internet.

          • +2

@Borg: Even if you have a xiaomi gateway you still need an internet connection to control wifi bulbs.

          • +1

@Borg: Works fine after you enable lan control (api control). I have all my yeelight on their own IOT vlans and no internet access and works fine with Home Assistant for well over a year now.

It toggle and change light instantly through home assistant compare to using the app and their server.

            • @[Deactivated]: Is this difficult to setup?

              • +2

@Harold Halfprice: Home Assistant? Not quite hard if you can follow instructions. They have detail guides for integration with many smart devices and if you have any more question you can post on their forums or discord(Discord is quickest). Just make sure you format your configuration and show error message if you don't know what is the issue. There is plenty of other people GitHub rep of their configuration and setup which you can learn and copy off that as starting point.

You cant say stuff like that and then not provide detailed instructions and free on site setup :)

            • +1

              @[Deactivated]: @foamyknuckle: Interesting, so I will ask
              - how does one enable lan control
              - how do you create colours etc (with which LAN App if WAN is offline) or one doesn't and used more for on/off control over wifi (which may also work for me)?
Sidenote. Have no interest in Home Assistant and more looking for a stand alone WiFi app to control locally, kind of like Lifx bulbs and their app works i.e. no internet access required (once setup)?

              • +1

@Borg: Pi3 is more than enough for starting off.

As for stand alone, this app on apple should works. You will need to send command line command to the light bulb to change mode colour etc.

                https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lightyeear/id1225903682

Yeti smart home also could be a good solution but I am not sure.

To enable land control, you need to download yeelight not the mi home app but if already pair using mi home you can use the same account as mi home you shouldn't need to repair the bulbs.

                https://forum.yeelight.com/t/cannot-find-the-developer-mode-…

Essentially, open the light bulb, click on the setting button on the top right and you should see the option for lan control/developer mode.

                • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for that.
                  - I dont have any Apple devices as am a android and Windows user myself.
                  - As noted, I do not own a Pi 3 (only 2's) so not option. Perhaps one day.

Will take a peak at Yeelight Dev mode. Looks interesting. Thanks again.

                  • +1

@Borg: Yeti smart home works on android. You can try that with dev mode with yeelight.

  • Is this first or second gen YeeLight?

    • 10W is 2nd gen..

      • Awesome. I have the Gen1 and i love it. This should be slightly better i hope

      • How many watts was 1st Gen?

        • I'm not sure, but interms of lumens, it's 600 v 800.

          Noticeably brighter in my experience.

  • I always have trouble with this site - where is the place to put the code in?

    • +3

View your cart, then enter it beneath your items on the left hand side.

      • Ah right, I went straight to checkout. Thank you!

  • Thank you. Finally managed to order these lights in time.

  • Does anyone know if these are the same size as the 1st gen?
They 1st gen only just fit in my fan light enclosure

    • They're ever so slightly longer…

      That's in metric.

  • +1

Does anyone know if there is a B22 variant of this? I've tried searching but can't seem to find anything.

    • Buy an adaptor

    • +1

      No bayonet ,only Edison

  • Is this bright enough for a bedroom say 2x3m?

My bedroom only has 1 socket and I'm hoping the white is bright enough noting its only 800lumens which worries me.

    Cheers!

    • -3

No, i got this and the hue, at 800lm its quite dull.

    • Depends how bright you want your room and what sort of fixture you are putting it in to.

2x3m is not a big space!

As a rule of thumb, 800lm is equivalent to a 60watt incandescent bulb.

    • I found the old version to bright in the bedroom tbh

  • +5

Still kick myself for not ordering more when they were $11 or $15 once. Only got one as it was pretty new thing at the time. But had been solid..

Edit found it: it was almost 2 years ago.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/328434

    • That was Generation 1, this is the newer version.

      • ok thanks. Do you know if they still sell gen 1 and at old price?

    • +2

I am now loving my inner bargain they all are still going strong

    • +1

Bought 6 at that time.. Didn't loose a single beat.. following the schedule setup.. few hours a day,,

  • got one, thanks

  • Do people mainly use this for bed side table lamps?

    • +1

Yes, just lamps. Mainly because I'm not a fan of ceiling lights.

    • +2

Use them for ceiling lights only. Mine are first gen, very good. 800lumens will be even better.

      • You use it for ceiling? Will a 800 lumen suffice?? I'm contemplating on buying but have been seeing how the light delays from turning on

  • +5

Had multiple of these about 18 months or so ago. Gave them all away as I was so fed up with them either never working or having massive lag.

Upgraded to Philips Hue and whilst they're hugely more expensive, they're seamless and work perfectly.

Hopefully they've ironed out the bugs I had, as I found the lights to be of very high build quality and brighter than Hue

    • My Gen 1 used to be pretty laggy when I first got it. It's definitely faster now after the various updates. Have it hooked up to google home and takes approx 2-3 seconds after I give google the command.

    • I've found Gen2 to be really good and responsive. But that's using HomeAssistant and "LAN Mode". The phone app and Google Home/Alexa integration will traverse the internet and multiple continents so won't be as quick.

    • Man shoulda waited for a few updates. Flys now.

Need those deals on some led strips!

  • Do we need to replace any old circuity when replacing old incandescent blub to this? I have heard I need LED drivers for LEDs

    • Nah these will go into any ES ( Edison screw)

      • code doesn't work. please please fix with cherry on top :(

  • I have a huge ikea light that is rated at 7w, reckon this would work? I've previously used double the wattage on other lights without issue.

  • How good is this bulb in energy saving compared to philips?

    • +1

To a phillips what i.e. which model/bulb as phillips make many?
Tip: Enery saving = Just check the watts of each. These are capable of max 10 Watts assuming you were running at 100% power. Just check the phillips one and its max wattage. Ultimately comes down to how you use and brightness set.

      • Trying to figure out if the yeelight 600lumen would be enough for my bedroom 4m X 4m

        • Its fine BUT that's a personal thing i.e. how Bright one likes the room to be. I have mine only set to 50% Brightness in a Sunset type colour and bright enough for me to read (Its other side of Bed). If however you wanted Midday brightness across the whole room then two would be better. It should be absolutely fine for a Bedroom I would think!

          • @Borg: Thanks, I'm going to buy it :)

  • Does anyone know a 1000 lumens smart bulb which allows control of white temperature aside from LIFX? I have these at home and they still need to be a little bit brighter…

  • Has the option to purchase the E27 or E26 base, can anyone help me out?

    • +1

      e27

      • Beautiful, I thought as much, thanks for your help

  • What’s the best app to use. There’s a few on the App Store. ‘Yeeligjt’, ‘blue yeelight ‘ or mi home

  • the code doesnt work, so sad

    • Glad I purchased before hitting the sack late last night (worked then) as just tested now and you are right, no longer works. Perhaps they will reactivate it??

    • I'm sad as well…wanting to buy

  • Hopefully banggood will bring the deal back
