      Yes, Powerpal works great with solar!

      The app shows the power you are importing from the grid and will show 0W of imported power when your solar array is fully powering your home. This is a great time to run any occasional appliances (like the washing machine or dishwasher) to use up the spare solar energy.

      Powerpal is compatible with all digital electricity meters, including those with 3 phase power.

          Most solar inverters give gross solar output but not consumption information.

          Powerpal completes the picture by showing the times when you are importing from the grid (or not) so you can match your appliance usage to when you have spare solar power available.

      Based on the installation instructions on the website this device appears to use pulse meter technology to read your energy consumption so it'll be very limited in functionality other than telling you your on the spot wattage reading and time interval energy consumption (hourly, daily, etc). It won't be very useful if you have solar or want to know other parameters like voltage, current or per phase data. For that price I'd rather get a clamp type monitor like efergy or owl one and purchase additional clamps to consolidate solar and per phase data

          That's a very misleading statement. Your device only does half of what energy retailer/distributor does by showing import data, it doesn't complete the pictures per se because even with just inverter and you energy monitor, user wont know how much out of the solar generation is export and how much is self consumption. Regardless of solar or not this device only tell user how much they import from the grid. The only good thing about it is it show almost realtime power inport so user can see adjust their usage pattern.
          Another issue is Bluetooth connectivity meaning smartphone needs to be within 10m range which kinds of defeat the purpose of the app and IoT, just like those Bluetooth temperature display from xiaomi that struggles to integrate with the rest of the xiaomi eco system

            @lgacb08: Typical Powerpal range from the meter box to the phone in an urban environment is around 100m (about double the range of a typical WiFi connection). Powerpal uses a slightly more advanced chipset than the xiaomi temperature display. ;)

            You are correct, the solar use case for Powerpal is as a low cost way to help households adjust their usage patterns to self-consume as much of the solar energy they generate as possible, rather than exporting it to the grid, to maximise their solar benefits. It does this without the need for an electrician to visit to install the product.

            However, if real-time monitoring of solar export is a key requirement then an alternative (electrician installed) product would be a better fit for your requirements - there are plenty of good ones available (SolarAnalytics, Carbon Track, Enphase, Fronius Smart meter, etc).

      That's correct, Powerpal uses ultra-high-power Bluetooth to connect your electricity meter to an app on your phone.

      The typical range from the meter box to the phone is around 100m (about double the typical range of WiFi) and the signal will penetrate through most solid walls, including brick and concrete.

      The battery in Powerpal is not impacted by the use of the real time data function.

      Data is transmitted every 380ms from Powerpal to the mobile phone while they are connected, however the reaction time to a change in energy load will be set by the reaction speed of the utility meter.

      Typically the usage reading in the app will update within 1-5 seconds of an appliance being switched on or off.

      Powerpal is significantly more accurate that clamp style monitors!

      As Powerpal transmits the data logged by your utility energy meter the usage data reported in the app is very accurate - our users typically report logged usage to be within 99% of utility meter reads.

      Powerpal works with digital meters and cannot interface with the older "spinning disk" style meters.

      If you wish you can contact your energy retailer to ask for your meter to be upgraded - they are now legally required to complete the upgrade within 15 business days of your request:

      If you are with one of the "big 3" energy retailers there should be no charge for this upgrade.

        I asked for an upgrade once before. They came and deemed an upgrade was needed external to my property and wanted $450 so I never bothered. Won't be living here long enough to get a benefit.

    I got one of these on the weekend. After reading how they worked, I was very suss about their accuracy. I compared it to my downloaded data from my energy provider (Jemina/Victoria) and the two figures were identical. I have solar and while it doesn't take into account my feed in tariff as a dollar value, the usage in K/W was spot-on. (e.g. App said I used 6.23kw and my downloaded data was 6.223kw. Four days in and the readings have been that close, it really surprised me how a flashing light could result in an accurate reading. Then I thought about optical fiber. I am visually impaired and the app works reasonably well with VoiceOver screenreader on the IPhone.

        When you're updating the app next, would appreciate it if the dates down the bottom could be more accessible to screenreader. Most of the app is fine, but a few of the buttons need better labeling to work with VoiceOver. Happy to beta test/offer VO advice if it makes my lif (and other visually impaired user's lives) easier!

      Sorry, Powerpal cannot currently report export power as we are unable to access this from the interfaces available on the utility energy meter.

      Yeah, this device can only see the import side of your household electricity, can't tell you how much you export or self consume. For a home with solar, your best bet is to get additional consumption meter bundled with your inverter or using clamp type monitor (but you probably need at least 2 clamp to do)

    I bought a 4 pack of the Kogan Smarterhome wifi switches with energy monitors the other week and, in combination with the PowerPal monitor, I've got the best of both worlds (and I'm driving my sister crazy by hassling her about how much power stuff uses).

      Hi Nikopol, we use ultra long range bluetooth connectivity for Powerpal as WiFi cannot offer the battery life we need.

      We plan to offer support for connecting Powerpal to Google Home in future, which will then allow you to see you power usage when away from home.
