    • Yep, from their eBay store, not sure why they are posting a 50% off deal here, when they are actually advertising it less elsewhere themselves?

I think they seriously misunderestimated the OzB community - IMHO indicative of very average thought process, which seems reflected in their website and underwhelming product info.

And has been as low as $120, but has never been sold for anything more than $150 since January

OP is having a laugh trying to bring this here

Sorry but this strikes me as a 'pop-up' business who's having some 3rd party make their knives and then stamping their brand on them passing them off as something special. The 'about us' section of a company website normally details the history, foundation date of company etc - this one reads very amateurishly: http://schaffen.com.au/pages/about-us

They are charging very significant prices for their products, which are essentially all knives and yet very scant info on them - e.g exact alloy of steel used, exact HRC of blades, exact wood used in handles. Sorry but thats grossly subpar and perhaps works if you're selling $15 knives but when you want to claim your 5 knife block set is worth $400 - then that type of info is absolute the absolute minimum.

Don't mean to be harsh as I'm sure the OP has something to do with the company - but I'm very much into my kitchen knives and this just isn't par for the mid-upper tier kitchen knife market. :-/

No downvote from me but I'd strongly avoid as you can buy a lot of high quality individual knives (always better strategy than a block set) elsewhere for $200.

PS. Ouch - good find by the above posters, how poor form to post up a more expensive deal on OzB - very poorly thought through - hate to do it but for being so silly and the fact regardless of how 'likely mediocre' I think these knives are - they're ~$50 cheaper elsewhere, so thats a bad deal and hence deserving of a neg. Is only fair.

    • Being into kitchen knives, can you recommend a OzBargainlyish-priced set/brand that is decent enough for general but long-term use by someone who is by no means refined in the kitchen?

      • No offence at all but I'm a bit asperger-y and so I can only give long answers or none at all. In short, don't buy a set buy several individual knives, you really only need couple - most of the others in any block never get used. Cheaper is often better for non-knife nutters as more forgiving. Victorinox's fibrox range is non-glam but very good (thats why they're super popular with actual pros - albeit the apprentices). Otherwise different blade types etc suit different folks, I kind of like asian style ones but also use a chefs knife for 50% of stuff.

Always wash your knives up by hand (never dishwasher), store properly (not lose in a drawer and learn to sharpen PROPERLY as even the worlds most expensive knife isn't worth crap if it's blunt (which all knives will be soon through usage) - best thing I ever got for my knives is a ceramic hone (is like the grossly misused butcher's steel but made of a fine ceramic- is super easy way to hone/touch up knives between proper sharpening). Look on OzB or Whirlpool, lots of good tips on buys.

    No HTTPS?
Be careful folks. NEVER buy things from a site that is just http instead of https

  • Neg for cheaper elsewhere…
