No reason to buy for Xbox* because it does virtual surround out of the box but PS4 is a different story.
The only way to have virtual surround for PS4 is using either of Sony's admittedly quite nice headphones - or use a third party mixer such as this which mixes the 5.1 output into virtual surround.
If you have s/pdif input for your PC you could use your PC's soundcard to mix virtual surround and try many different virtual surround algorithm.
- although with any virtual surround it may not work for you because of the the algorithm and shape of your ears. So you could try a different algo with the Mixamp.

@MEGASERVE: You're happy to buy a pricey headset that might only be practical for <2 years and I'm not. I didn't say nobody should buy it, just said it's a hard pass from me.
Xbox confirmed at E3 that their next gen console will be backwards compatible with Xbox One controllers and headsets:

Do I want? Yes. Do I need? Not really. My XB1 Stereo Headset cable is starting to tear but I can just buy a new pair for around $60 from the UK and sell the adapter to bring down the cost.
But Astro headsets are quite good and I wouldn't mind something that isn't just stereo sound.
It think they are clearing these out because the 2019 version is out in the US (not sure about Australia). Expect other stores to follow.

I received mine today. Never got a notification saying it was shipped. Came from a Harvey Norman store.
I also got mine today, it was left at my front door at 9AM also came from Harvey Norman but I haven't got any emails apart from the confirmation order, wasn't told it was shipped so I asked on live chat yesterday, they said it wasn't shipped and it's going to take 2-5 more business days before they even ship it.
I never received mine, nor did they respond to any emails about my order. Currently waiting on PayPal dispute to resolve.
