Optus MyTab from Dick Smith Online $99 Delivered

1460

I just ordered a couple. You might want to combine this with the $20 Paypal cashback deal, or the AMEX cashback deal and MoneyBackCo. Enjoy!

P.S. if you are experiencing the issue of cann't add it to cart, please try search "MyTab" and add it directly in the search result page. It worked for me.

And one more tip, if you want to buy two and take the Paypal deal, there is a $2 SIM pack which can make the purchase eligible: http://dicksmith.com.au/product/E7310/amaysim-2-sim-pack

  • Will this work as a phone on the Telstra network ?

    • +1

If you unlock it…..I dont see why not. Huge phone though, if you are like 7ft would be ok :)

    • it's easy to unlock and free…it will work on Telstra 3G 2100Mhz/GSM but not Next G 850Mhz

  • ordered thanks, i had my name down at about 4 Bigw and Oparse stores and figured id never get one.

  • Has this got any GPS on it?

    • +1

Couple of reviews mention it does. As for using this as a GPS, Google Maps works great, but requires a constant data connection.

      • can you install tomtom or other nav apps like what i do with my iphone?

        • Yes, there's heaps on Android market, some are pretty expensive though (i.e. Navigon ones).

        • +1

No tomtom for android available yet. iGO MyWay 8.4.2.139242 for Android plus the R18 maps covering Australia is the way to go, works very well and off line (no data used). Ensure you get the 800 x 480 version.

Google it and look for torrents.

    • Yes it does.

    • +1

Does Google Map Navigation work on this thing? Not that I am looking for a 7" turn by turn GPS on my car…

      • +1

There's several apps that will work Scotty, one thats preloaded thats good is Navigation (Blue north arrow in Apps) which is great although like any GPS you need to adjust settings to your liking…..

      • yes it does. You can also get offline maps like tomtom, igo etc.
It does not seem to use the compass though.

        • TomTom for Android? Is it out? Really?

        • Sorry, my mistake. IGO8 is good though.

      • CoPilot Live works. Got Oceania maps which do all of AU and NZ. Fully functioning stand alone V9 sat nav now! :-)

      • Doesn't Google Maps provide a chaching option now? If you've previously browsed the areas you'll be travelling to, you won't need a constant data connection to view them.

        • yep that's true to some extent it will work, i.e. you can browse maps offline, BUT i'm not sure how it works with navigation (i think it still needs data to figure out the directions?) have to give it a go!

    • Yep!

Works with IGO Myway too apparently (can store maps on device rather than needing data connection)

EDIT: Whoops didn't see that this was answered already. Doink

  • Can you get TomTom or another GPS software for this device and use it as a GPS?

    • +1

Yes, iGO works fine, or it comes with Google Navigation which will also do the job. Bit big though, for the widescreen.

    • +2

Got Copilot 8 working great on it! and GPS doesn't take long to fix when you're in the car, only problem is where to put it though voice guidance does help or have someone else hold it in the car

    • See previous comment, NO tomtom for android at present.

  • Looks like sold out.

  • All gone from the website and no stores around sydney have it in stock.

  • damn, was so close in the checkout, had done all paypal stuff, and then it just kicked me back to the cart!

  • Looks like it sold out
-Put in all my bank details and next screen loads to say it has run out

    Missed out twice now

    • In Store Only
Please check store stock for local availability

      • Yeah no shop stock from liverpool to chatswood. i checked that before i commented but granted i haven't looked further than sydney

        • +1

Not to sound really petty (I realy am not)
But the guy/s who negged me-could you tell me where this is actually in stock in Sydney

I agree my previous statement (two comments above) was wrong because technically it is not sold out everywhere (just sold out online and I did not clarify this point)

        • +2

@hijupic, no idea why you're getting negged.

  • +2

    Sold out online, again.

  • Does flash work on this?

    • -1

Ignore that just found that it does after upgrade

      • +1

Mine is on 2.2 and flash does not work, which upgrade are you on and can you confirm for sure that flash works.

        • Mine does not work either on 2.2

      • +1

Flash works? with what sites or app?

You can watch youtube videos through the app though

      • +4

Flash doesn't work on ZTE v9, because the hardware does not support Flash. you need a ARMv7 or higher for flash support, and ZTE v9 is on ARMv6.

  • Missed this again. XXX_XXX

3000 clicks almost. There is no chance of anything being left now.
I might as well gamble with getting a fake/stolen one on ebay.

  • I ordered two so I'd get the Paypal $20 bonus. I only actually want one. When they arrive, I'll sell one at cost ($99) to a local Canberran Ozbargainer who can pickup from Belconnen.

    Cheers.

    • +1

Same here. If anyone can collect from bellbird park near ipswich the 2nd one is yours for $99. Pm or email me

    • Sent you an e-mail i'll take that if it's still avaliable.

    • If anyone in Perth needs one, I have a spare. Email me http://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/10511/contact

  • +2

At $99 you've got to wonder how much it actually costs to make one of these devices these days!

    • +4

In china, this is equal to 700 Yuan. For a quick meal, it's 10 yuan.

For a Tenda 11n usb wireless card. Here you get it for $19. You might think it's cheap.

However in China, it is 29 Yuan for sale online.

McD, KFC only pay 6 Yuan per hour for casual staff.

      • 6 yuan / hour for casual staff. Wow. That's criminal.

        • +3

6 Yuan in China is like 6 dollars here. Or 4-5 at least. Lower than the statutory threshold but there are many juveniles (minors) working here, in OZ, for 6 bucks hourly, if they are under 17 (or 16? Correct me if my memory doesn't serve).

      • -1

Mr. 周,when can you find this at 700RMB?

        • +2

He was talking about the equivalent amount in RMB (yuan).

      • So how much is the ZTE v9 in China?

  • a quick 2-minute review by cnet here:
    http://www.cnet.com.au/optus-my-tab-339307123.htm

  • Anybody know if / how PDF files (eg, eBooks, manuals, etc. - esp'ly in color) can be displayed / scrolled on this puppy… AND how well (image quality + speed, when scrolling) are?

    TIA

    • +1

by the time you figure that out theyre probably all gone :P

its not too great but for the price you cant expect too much
somewhat laggy and double tap to zoom (single touch)
image quality rerenders when you zoom and move, lags also.
nevertheless useable since im reading all my lecture notes on them.

      • +1

I find Aldiko reader quite good, unlike most of the PDF readers which as you say are "laggy".

  • what are these like watching videos on them ?

    • AVI / DivX probably okay.
      MKV - don't bother.

    • +1

id say youtube quality videos are alright, dont expect full 800x480 video though

  • +1

For those who are interested, I have installed Launcher Pro on the My Tab and use it instead of the default launcher. I find it much smoother and more responsive when swiping from screen to screen. The best browser I've found is Opera Mini but if you want to watch flash videos from the net then SkyFire is your best bet. I'd be interested in hearing what other people thought and have done with their new tab.

    • +1

launcher pro actually better? on 2.3.4 or 2.2?

i assumed the original would be the fastest.

oh and 2.3.4 is worth the upgrade :)

      • I upgraded to official 2.2 first then am running Launcher Pro on top of that. But I take your point about 2.3.4 being faster - I'm not too familiar with rooting and flashing android devices so I've steered clear of that.

        • +2

I upgraded 2 of these tabs yesterday using the link found on the first page of this post. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1713293&p… I followed it to the letter and Im so glad I did. Its working so much faster and its such a great little tab for $99.00 I dont regret doing it. Might look a bit daunting at first, but its the best tutorial I have found so far.

        • Ok thanks, joshka, I think you might have convinced me into giving it a go then.

  • -1

Mine just arrived from Optus online and I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about. This is just a bigger, less functional version of my phone. The touch sensitivity is average, but the screen itself is horrible - 800x480 really doesn't look good at a 7" screen size.

If you have a semi-decent (I'm using an ancient HTC HD2 which you can pick up on eBay for pretty cheap) Android phone I'll think you'll be as disappointed as I am. I can only assume all the rave reviews are coming from people who've never used an Android handset, or any smart phone for that matter.

I'll give it more of a go after the 2.2 upgrade, but that isn't going to fix the sub-par screen. This thing seems destined for a good Broden-ing on eBay.

    • +5

I'm pretty sure that you have gotten more than what you actually paid…

    • +2

I think you are viewing this through the eyes of your smartphone. The resolution is fine (higher than you'll get on your desktop monitor) and the same as your HD2. The difference is with a larger screen size its much easier to use for reading or looking at web pages, more practical.

Give the tablet some time, you will find you tend to prefer to use it at home, not as fiddly as a smartphone to use, but with the same capabilities.

    • +3

Comment on it once you get it updated and configured correctly.
I have seen and used many droid toys and this thing rocks when you "remember" the price and everything it does (and does well). I won't compare it to my $5000 laptop though.

    • The thing is HD2 is a very good phone. A lot of custom ROMs. The CPU is more powerful than the one in the Optus Tab.

Optus Tab is okay. After all, it is a low end tablet. Can't get Plants vs Zombies to work. Probably won't work with most Gameloft HD games. $99 is probably the main driver.

In terms of Web browsing, tablets still have advantages over phones.

      • I only bought one for browsing, email and books so for me $99 is a bargain, better than getting a ereader that does only one function.

        • +1

Love it how anything negative posted about this thing gets negged. God forbid someone gives their honest opinion in an effort to educate others…

      • really, mine runs PvZ fine :)

        • Which rom? And why the smiley?

  • looks like the website is all sold out - no option to add to cart, direct link or searching. all stores seem to be sold out

the optus my tab has been ozbargained !!!

  • My buddy got one on the DSE website today, but all the stores in Perth still have no stock!

  • Dick Smith sold out online?

  • A random question, can this be used as a wireless keyboard for a desktop PC? Like the one used for HTPC. If so, how?

  • Is it just me or does the website say in Store only? Can you order online? I could not find a store where it is available. I am in Victoria, any suggestions?

  • anyone know the procedure on unlocking? do you just call/head to optus?

    • +3

Try http://www.nextgenserver.com/calculator/ and choose the option ZTE followed by ZTE Blade Android. It should work.

      • +1

can confirm this works! takes all of 30 seconds to enter the imei and you're done!

      • thanks :)

    • Should say that you need to switch off the tab, take out the Optus Sim, put another Sim card in and switch it on again. It will stop in the middle of booting and when it asks for the code then you enter the code given by the website.

  • +3

Another deal if your local DSE store is sold out: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/46660
Harvey Norman for the same $99 including 3GB of data.

  • Glenelg in Adelaide has limited stock according to the website - guess where I'll be tomorrow morning?!

  • +7

to all who are still thinking of getting one, don't give up…this is the best $99 I've spent on a tech gadget in my life. I've owned a htc legend, and soon to own a galaxy s2 (best smartphone in the world!) and an not a stranger to android. the optus tab rocks as an E-READER, NEWSREADER, YOUTUBE PLAYER, SOCIAL NETWORKING AND EMAIL CHECKER, MUSIC PLAYER, FM RADIO, GUITAR TUNER, GUITAR CHORDS DISPLAY…blah blah…. The screen is totally usable even though it's a resistive, doesn't use much pressure at all! I got a vinyl cover and carry out with me everywhere! Just buy it already!

  • +1

DSE has them back in stock online again, I just bought one :)

  • yeah back online again. I just bought one too. Get in quick

  • Sweet, got two! Had to use the "Search + Add" method to add it though.

  • Sweet! Was really bummed out when I missed out on yesterday's deal!
I've got the Paypal confirmation, but Dick Smith just forwarded me onto the the payment page… We'll see how this turns out.
EDIT: Ok, after the nth try it went through, but not through paypal (had to use dick smith CC checkout).

  • Sweet, got one.

  • +1

Just purchased one online then from DSE.

    Great video review:
    http://myandroidtablets.net/2010/12/best-cheap-android-table…

  • Yay got one of dse… now just have to impatiently wait for it to arrive

  • 3GB included data? $25 included calls and 100 standard SMS (3-month expiry) same as Big W (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45725?page=9)?

  • Has anyone actually had theirs dispatched or will DSE be doing the optus runaround too?

It states it will be delivered in 1-2 days.

    I hope this is correct.

Where are they couriering it from? Each store is sold out. o_O?

  • +2

Good to see they had stock to sell order already dispatched .Cancelled the optus order still no ETA from them, put my name down at 6 other stores that said they were getting stock this week but none received the stock they ordered . If all the stores order what they have been requested for there is going to be a lot of stock in stores over the next month and maybe some deals to be had

  • help needed. ordering now online but can't add it to cart, tried search "MyTab" also CAN'T add it directly in the search result page…
Has anyone actually received it from DSE confirm that it included 3GB data, $25 calls and 100 standard SMS (3-month expiry) - same as Big W (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45725?page=9)?
