    I like that

    Excellent deal

My 'yardstick' comparison: Seagate 3Tb at Officeworks

$99 = $33 per Tb. So they're cheaper than these WD Reds, and you can RAID them if you want for extra speed!

And what drives do they use inside?

    • +5

Red drives are optimised for use in NAS systems (and I find the Red drives I have in my NAS run several degrees cooler than the non-red ones). Because they're for use in NAS's you also usually have a limited number of slots you can put a drive in, thus having a higher capacity individual drive really helps.

Not saying it's a bad deal, nor that they have their uses for NASes and servers, but if I see a $/Tb figure then I'll offer other options for everyone else looking.

        • +2

Yeah but you aint comparing apples with apples, a NAS drive cant be compared with just any drive especially ones from office works

  • I bought this combination

Qnab ts453be 8GB + Remote for $650 ( $80 wish cash back also there) from PC Lan

2 * 4TB wd red from computer alliance for $287

No money to buy 2 more 😬

I just shucked my WD MYBOOK 8TB HDD tonight. It's very easy if you don't plan on using the enclosure ever again.

I shucked a pair of these Elements drives recently, they both had helium EMAZ drives inside.
Doing it correctly allowed me to reuse the enclosure for a spare 4TB drive.

It's a handy backup drive now.

I then got in touch with WD support, gave them the model and serial numbers, they Fedex'd a couple of AU power adapters. Not that I needed them because they're simple 12v 1.5a 5.5mm/2.1mm barrel connectors and had heaps lying around.

      Happy with their support.

  • Thanks OP
Got a Purple one for home surveilliance system, good price although it's still a bit more expensive than that in US
