    I think you mean 512kB L2.

  • how many in stock ?

  • +4

You should put no pickups in your description to save people the time looking for the answer.

  • +9

    Perfect for winter.

  • +2

I was thinking toongabie. That's not too bad to pick up. But still $12 postage ain't bad. Bargain I would say if I needed a new comp for the parents who don't do much.

    and stuck there…

tried both IE and Firefox ????

    • seems to work ok if you purchase as a 'guest' rather than register…

  • +1

Wow. People are still trying to hock these.

    • +6

They are still absolutely perfect for what about 90% of the population do on a computer.

As far as I am aware, there have been no additional requirements for downloading email, surfing webpages, typing letters or filling in spreadsheets in the past 10 years or so.

Put it in context - people are happy with netbook with far less grunt than this, and running a heavier OS And this is only $55.

      • I agree that most P4 machine are still good for most people!
these people only tends to Surf web, Docs, email & download!
some don't even know what's file formats & windows directory!

chasing the FASTEST speed and paying TOP DOLLAR is kinda stupid!
buy what you intend to use it for + the actual value of the item!

similar story if you're buying a DAILY moving transport(car),
paying 200k~500k which doesn't make much sense at all!
think about the daily maintenance fees & fuel burning,
of course it's different story if you have too much money + don't mind for it!

      • i'm going to use it to replace a P III with 256Mb RAM that we use down at our holiday house, mainly for web browsing and listening to music…

not it can be retired and we'll be able to use Skype too !!!!

        • I think you'll be disappointed. The Celeron D only has 30% better performance that a PIII.

        • +5

          cool story bro

        • +2

The Celeron D only has 30% better performance that a PIII

the extra ram (256Mb vs 1Gb) will help, as will having SATA instead of IDE now…

They are terribly energy inefficient when compared to newer systems, and for a couple of hundred more you could have a much better new system with warranty and no risks of any component failing - remember this is an ex-lease machine so it was used extensively in a work environment, and possibly wasn't even switched off for years at a time. The hard drive, for one won't last much longer.

A cheap Atom-based system with a new hard drive and windows XP will be a much better deal IMO.

        • Ditto, pretty sure you'll find the newer dual core Atoms pack more of a punch than this. Although personally I'd go for Linux or W7 Starter….

        • +2

They are terribly energy inefficient when compared to newer systems, and for a couple of hundred more you could have a much better new system with warranty

          • that is around 400% more….
          • we'd only use it for a few hours a month anyway, so don't care how much energy it uses… doubt it will cost more than a few dollars per year…
          • it's probably more energy efficient than the Pentium III it will be replacing
          • the cost of this system is probably cheaper than adding more ram to my P III
          • this comes with a 1 year warranty, unless it is DOA, if it dies a year down the track, it's only $55 so who cares…
  • anyone got an idea of how would these go as a HTPC running MythTV/Ubuntu?

    • +1

I reckon that the graphics card would choke it. You'd need to add a 1/2 height PCIe card that had decent onboard processing power, HDMI out, etc.

      • +1

Other issue to consider is the power supply doesn't have the extra power needed for 'most' of the PCIe graphics cards(1/2 heights included I'd think) nowadays. unless someone knows of a model, half height, with HDMI, and doesn't require the extra power?

cuz this machine only comes with 230W power supply.

    • +1

Too slow to play HD content, would be unsuitable unless you go get a graphics card. Its also difficult to find a half height PCI-E graphics card that actually gives you the half height bracket. PSU should be fine, a low power graphics card doesnt consume much anyway.

HTPC also requires a lot of storage so youll want to get rid of the crap 40GB hdd.

I do beleive this is a prescott based celeron so it does output a lot of heat. Not sure if this will be a quiet system.

  • Pardon my ignorance but a monitor needs to be bought too, right?

    • Not if you already have a monitor or a LCDTV.

      • If you already have an older LCD screen with VGA…

  • wonder if it will work ok with Windows 7 ????

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows7/products/system-…

    • Work? Sure.

Work well? No. 2+GB RAM and a faster, larger hard drive would be required for it to not be crazy slow. The CPU isn't great, but it'd manage.

  • Perfect for anybody too tight ass to get a brand new system.

    • Depends what it will be used for…

Just a word of warning - I've worked on a lot of prebuilt systems around this era (P4 Prescott, CelD, etc) and it's not unusual for the motherboards to have faulty capacitors. Very common in boards circa 2004-2005. Had to throw a heap of dud boards and PSU's out recently because of this fact…

Not really much that can be done to check, unless you want to check the manufacturer of all the caps and compare them against the s**t lists at http://www.badcaps.net/. You might actually be able to find info on the motherboard if you can get the details of it.

Also note: It's not just the motherboard that can have them, plenty of PSU's do as well, monitors, damn near everything unfortunately.

    • Good point to note..we had a heap of IBM LCDs at work from this era and heaps of them developed issues from the capacitors failing….

    • thanks… should be covered under the 1 year warranty though…

  • +1

This guy posted a few months back at same price, seems they didnt sell. The CPU is poor and noticably slower than a P4, its not dual core. The capacitors can be see to be bad, they will be busting, smell and make a noise in some cases, I am aware of this issue but the business workstations I maintain from his era have yet to fail so its not like a 1 in 10 thing, you would be lucky to find one.

$40 would be a good deal.

I should have listened to you guys…

It arrived yesterday (Fri) and I tried setting it up Friday night…

It appears dead… Power light turns on, front fan starts up for about a second, then a red light appears below the power light and it does a series of loud beeps…

From past experience, it's either a dead mobo or power supply…

Anyway, i just sent them an email and see what they'll say… I hope i don't get stung for return postage when they ship you an item that's dead… If they do, I paid with PayPal, would they be able to help ???

Anyway, I'll post back here with what happens for future reference from anyone thinking about buying from this company…

    • +1

Sorry to hear that. I hope they make it good for you, otherwise their name will be mud around here. OzBargain never forgets! Bwahahaha.

    • Paypal will NOT help at all. I had an issue with DealExtreme that I paid with paypal, and they flatout said I had no coverage or options.. Useless piece of crap they are!

Sorry to hear about the box, hope it gets resolved.

      • got an email back from them saying to try and remove and then replace first the memory and CPU, but it hasn't made any difference… Not even getting any BIOS checking happening…

have replied back, so i just have to wait and see what they say i guess…

will be even more annoyed if i have to pay $20 more to send it back…

      • +2

        just an update…

they've been pretty good so far… very responsive over email and over the phone.
they asked me to remove/replace the mem and cpu with varying degrees of luck.
I got it to boot yesterday, but left it running overnight to see how it goes and it was dead again in the morning…

they're mailing me a replacement power supply as it is the most likey problem, so we'll take it from there…

      • +1

        another update….

managed to get PC to boot up fine, but when left overnight, would be dead by the morning…

expresspcparts sent me a replacement power supply to try… PC booted up fine again, seemed to work ok, but after leaving it overnight, it was dead again in the morning…
trying to reboot would cause the fan to fire up for a second, then beeping…

my guess is there is a problem with the motherboard, but can't be sure…

anyway, just heard they are sending me a replacement one and will arrange to collect the old one at no cost to me…

So even though you may question the quality of these refurbed PCs, i give expresspcparts full marks for customer service so far…

Was hesitant about buying are refurb at first, but I'd definitely consider purchasing something again from them….

Just to close this off, for future reference…

i received a replacement computer last friday, and it works great… they'll pay for the return postage of the original too, and said i could keep the 1Gb ram from the original for all the hassles…

so end of the day, i got PC with 2Gb ram for $55 (plus postage)… perfect for web browsing and basic ms-office stuff…

best customer service experience i've ever had….
