  • This or Pioneer VSX-933? Buying av receiver for first time, but want to have Dolby atmos for some future proofing. Any suggestions?

    • Wait for HDMI 2.1? Honestly VSX-933 and RX-V685 I would say are fairly close spec wise, which you prefer look wise?

      • I don't have any preference for looks really.

    • +1

Terrible time to buy an AV receiver if you want future proofing as HDMI 2.1 is just arriving but wont be mainstream until next year.

This would still be good until you buy a new TV that supports HDMI 2.1, eARC might even be useful if you current TV supports it.

Personally I opted for the cheaper Pioneer VSX 932 which was closer to $525 and has pretty similar specs. Will buy a new TV and AV receiver with HDMI 2.1 in 2020 :)

      • yes… but also no.

if you need to buy a receiver now, eARC will allow you to have have the same future proofing as HDMI 2.1, capped at the number of HDMI 2.1 inputs your TV has…

i.e. plug everything HDMI 2.1 into the TV, and use eARC to get uncompressed atmos/dtsX through the receiver… (everything that is < HDMI 2.1 can go into the AVR)

I'm in this boat, and would really like a 2.1 AVR, but can't wait. This will at least last until I have > 4 external devices that need HDMI 2.1 features. Which should be a while…

        • That is a good point. The only problem I see is that you are relying on Yamaha's software implementation of eARC working with proper hardware implementations when they arrive.

To give an example the AVR I just replaced a Denon x1100w officially supported Dolby Digital Plus yet would drop out constantly while playing that content. Raised it with Denon and they said yes it was supported in its original form but in latter years the format standard was changed and now not fully supported by this model, nothing they can do now.

Better to have eARC support than not but I wouldn't bet the house on it as support likely to be hardware limited.

          • @noise36: They advertise as supporting full HDMI 2.1 eARC. So should be fine. If I ever have issues will return. ACL is pretty good

      • Hmm, my current tv (LG UJT752T) supports HDMI 2 with ARC. And I don't think I'll be changing my tv in next few years. So I'm getting tilted towards Pioneer vsx 933 because of price and features on the table. But somehow Yamaha unit is bothering me… lol

        • What does the pioneer have over this?

    • does the pioneer support eARC?

      • No, eARC support is currently only available on LX502, LX503 and LX504. For the low end models from other brands, you have to go with either the Yamaha RX-V685 or the soon to be released here Denon X1600H.

        • Thanks!

I want Atmos 5.1.2 with eARC for the best price. What would your recommend? Wait for the Denon?

This Yamaha seems like a pretty great deal.

I'm going to see if HN will price match this so I can use the AMEX deal :)

          • @yozza: This deal is as good as it gets for eARC and Atmos.

            • @noise36: yeah, you're right. just pulled the pin! thanks!

  • I bought this. thanks.
