I'm actually tossing up between the above three models and would love advice and opinions in the comments.

  • Hi All - I see that the best historical price for the Shure 846 is $888, and for the IE800 is in the mid $600s.

I'm wondering if I should pounce on this myself, however I did have my heart set on the Shure 846 as I enjoy sub-bass, listening to mostly EDM, IDM, ambient, with some interest in hip hop and classical.

I don't suppose anyone out there is familiar with more than one of the above-mentioned models?

Edit: I should add that the IE800 with an only partially detachable cable really turns me off. So its basically between the Shure and the Westone.

    • Honestly if you're willing to fork out close to 1k for universals, might as well pay a little extra and get customs. There's like a few brands (Custom art, AAW) that offer them even cheaper than the universals that you mention. If you do want to get a universal, might as well get the Zeus from Empire Ears that's currently on sale at Massdrop (1k USD + GST & shipping).

      • those empire ears look nice - but at over $1600AUD, its a stretch (also, impossible without being able to try them first).

    • Go try them in store, you can't solely rely on other people's opinions as your hearing is different to others.

I personally went the A2A store here in Victoria to try the SE846, IE800 and Lyra back then and settled on the SE846. I even managed to get custom molded silicon tips from Sensaphonics when they still had an office in Melbourne.

    • I mainly listen to Techno when out and about and settled on the new Campfire Audio Polaris. Amazing bass and very comfortable. Would highly recommend adding to your list as they come in around the same price.

Go for the KZ-ZST from Amazon. Best bang for buck.

Edit: I'm a gigging musician, the KZ works for me as my IEMs on stage.

Nah not looking for bang for buck - looking for maximal bang under $1000.

Well the KZ AS10 replaced my A6t from 64 Audio. I used the S846 before ordering my custom A6T.

        • I want to believe - I really do. But like with the Pistons - they're OK i guess, but really nothing special, and lose as hell in the low end.

You say the KZ replaced the A6, but are they better/equal?

          Thoughts on the 846?

          • @ozbjunkie: Equal at the very least. At least with the KZ I dont have to worry about breaking it because it's cheaper to replace

The 846 has got good bass, which is probably what you want, but the mids can get muddied at times. Like what another comment said, head in to A2A to try them.

I'll still suggest you get the KZ anyway, it's not gonna hurt your wallet anyway.

            • @malaymail: That's true - and I'll feel like a dork if I honestly cant tell the difference between KZ and whatever I would have dropped serious cash on.

        • AS10 is good?
Would you upgrade to something else?

    • I heard ZS10 pro is good

    • Yeah, these are totally amazing, I have had many earphones and these are the best I tried so far, I have the Sony WH-1000XM2, both have a pleasing sound to my ears but the cost is significantly different, I just bought the B&O E8's, if they at least as good as these I will be happy

  • Have a look 64Audio’s IEMs, even U6s is much better than all the 3 you mentioned above.

I had both 846s and W4Rs before, it’s just not in the same level when comparing to U6s IMO.

    • Oh goodness not another contender - I'll have spent more in reading labour than on headphones by the end of this.

      • Are you close to an addictedtoaudio or minidisc? You can head in store and try them all out

        • yep planning on heading in to A2A tomorrow

          • @ozbjunkie: Hi! Just a heads up, as far as 64 Audio goes we (Minidisc) are the exclusive dealer in Australia. You are welcome to come in to our Chatswood store to compare against the Westone W60, SE840 and IE800 etc. We will also do price matching. Tell Wing that Lachlan sent you :)

            • @Minidisc: Ok thanks Lachlan - I've been watching your videos.

I'll keep it in mind - a little far to travel but it will be worth it if A2A doesnt have the others available for a demo.

    • Different price range.

      • My bad, looks like they got rid of the low end U series model now.

U12t is the cheapest you can get now…

  • Don’t get the ie800 they are mediocre at best. IEMs I’m using are beyerdynamic xelento which are really really good. Also campfire cascades which are amazing. Would go for the cascades if headphones work for you.

Also se846 are really overhyped they only sounded marginally better than the ie800

    • Hmmm - trying to be strict with under a grand. But I'll do some reading.

Not looking for headphones at the moment - but there will come a time. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm actually curious as to whether someone can tell me why at this sort of price you wouldn't want over or on ears?

    • I feel superior bass response with in ears, and I kind of enjoy the feeling of music inside my ears, even though this limits the soundstage. Also, with passive noise isolation I can listen at reduced volume and feel satisfied. Finally, I have glasses, which complicated things with some over ear phones.

I do intend to grab a high end set of cans at some point, but not yet. Will probably go for the hd820 - I like closed back cans.

  • I am currently listening to the periodic audio Be iems. Loving them. They are available at Addicted and well worth the money and your research time 😁

  • So I bought the Westone W60, having trialed a range of others, thoughts included below for posterity.

Shure 846 - Super bass, not muddy, but a little too much for daily use - I feel like these would give you headache eventually. There is a little domanance of bass over mids, but I actually found these to give decent details throughout the spectrum. If I was buying two sets today, these would be the second. Unfortunately, I wouldnt choose these as the only pair I own. Comfort was a small issue, but this was more due to the shape and stiffness of the over-ear memory wire.

Sennheiser IE800s - I was thoroughly unimpressed with these. They felt too light, flimsy, wouldnt stay in my ears properly. The sound was a little thin, despite the ability to cover the entire frequency spectrum. These didnt sound bad, there was just nothing in particular that sounded good. Combine this with the lack of fully replacebale cable and you have a strong recommendation to pass from me.

Sony IER-M9 - These actually sounded the flattest and cleanest of all the models I tried. Construction seemed sturdy, although they were a little hard to keep in my ears, I feel this was due to the tips I was using (I was running out of time). I felt the bass was ever so slightly underemphasised - but this would reflect my slight to moderate preference for more meaty bass. Very inoffensive, accurate, and detailed, with good separation between instruments. You could really hear the quality here. I didnt purchase these because they were good, but at $1600 vs $768 for the W60, I felt there was greater value for the cheaper product.

Westone W60 - These had a brightness, clarity, and separation in the mids and highs that exceeded the Shure, and the W60 achieved similar bass extension to the Shure, with slightly lower intensity, which for me made them less fatiguing. While I was initially somewhat hesitant with buying the W60 due to reports of cracked housing caps (which is only a cosmetic issue), a "warm" signature (which i rightly or wrongly associate with a fuzzy and less-detailed sound), and a greater focus on mids and highs than bass, these latter two issues did not present themselves to me during my listening test. Altogether I'm pretty satisfied at what I managed to get for the price, although if the Shure's came up for $888 again I'd be temped to get them as a second set.

Thanks all for the recommendations - these wont be the last pair of IEMs I'll ever buy so I look forward to listening to the others in future.

    • Where were you able to audition all these earphones?

      • +1

Addicted to audio in Newtown Sydney, there are stores in other capital cities. Also, minidisc in Chatswood Sydney has these on demo. Lachlan from minidisc is active on ozbargain, and has posted a response in this thread.

Edit- they have many more than these available, and much more high end (think 5000 buck cans). But my puny mind can only handle so much choice at once so I played it relatively safe and mainstream. I'll be more adventurous with more experience in future.
