It's been pretty close to this price before and given the issues Huawei are having I would expect it to get a lot cheaper before this whole thing blows over.

    • +14

I don't know how google cutting support for Huawei would effect their laptops..

      • +40

Every US company is cutting support, not just Google.

That includes Intel, Qualcomm and Microsoft.

It's Trump's bargaining chip in the trade war. There's a grace period of 90 days.

But for now Huawei are stockpiling to ensure they can deliver products after 90 days, but for how much longer, who knows.

        • +22

They can't stop you from getting software updates such as windows lmao.

It just mean new product won't have Intel or Microsoft shit in it.

Until the trade ban get lifted.

          • +6

            @[Deactivated]:

It just mean new product won't have Intel or Microsoft shit in it.

When they run out of i7's what CPU are they going to use for new devices after that? And what OS will it use?

They can't stop you from getting software updates such as windows lmao.

He's not concerned about the device you already bought. His point is a fire sale is going to happen in a few months time.

            • @lostn: That’s another thing, if your laptop broken, they might not have the parts to fix it. :(

            • @lostn: They could still use Ryzen chips, couldn't they?
OS is probably trickier though. Don't think mainstream market is ready for Linux :)

              • @FunkyMunky:

They could still use Ryzen chips, couldn't they?

They cannot, because AMD is also a US company. It's not just US companies but anything that uses US IP cannot be sold to Huawei. So even non US companies can't sell tech to Huawei. Even China's own products, as long as they use US IP are off limits.

If they don't reach a trade deal by 90 days, Huawei is finished and so is their 5G.

Someone will have to swallow their pride.

          • @[Deactivated]: Well, it is ok now but 6 months down the track, no more Nvidia driver updates means you won’t be able to play latest games.

Microsoft can block your windows updates according to hardware model, so less secure or no more new features.

Intel chipset update might stop, Bluetooth driver update might stop, the list goes on.

Will you pay $2k for a laptop that might not be supported 3-6 months down the track?!?!

            • @goraygo: Yeah playing games on MX150, it more for productive work than playing games.

You spoof Window licenses activation and still received updates. Yeah I would like to Microsoft to install more spyware. There isn't like other option like Linux. Window itself is not secure even with updates.

              https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/05/seria…

Yeah I don't think Intel would even brother using backdoor to disable some Huawei laptops.

Personally I wouldn't get because it has other problem of it own, such as camera location and not so great battery life with the screen. I would more interested in X1 Carbon/Pop OS 15/XP15 and also upcoming zen 3 notebook laptops.

Well, we always have Australia Consumer Law so if issues arises. You probs can return it to Amazon.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I wouldn't be spending 2k just to test that theory out.

        • +3

Although us started the trade war, since China pegged their currency below US currency to gain international competitiveness, China has essentially bought substantial amount of us securities, if China says nah, stuff you us we gonna sell all our us Govenment securities, then us would be fed over

        • Not just US. UK aswell as other countries are having issues.

        • If you want this laptop, you should definitely buy now. Huawei won't be able to get supplies to build more in the future.

        • +4

Install linux on it and it will do wonders.

          • +6

@Captain M: Yeah, some of the wonders include wondering how to get the fingerprint reader working, how to get it to display 4K60 instead of 30, why it runs so hot and the battery life is so poor when the Nvidia drivers are installed, why it doesn't shutdown properly, how to get the touchscreen to work, why the sound is unreliable, and why it's sluggish. ;)

All that required fiddling might be fine for a tech-oriented person, but it definitely isn't going to work for a typical consumer.

            https://www.reddit.com/r/MatebookXPro/comments/ao3pp2/runnin…

          • @Captain M: I agree, I cant see myself ever going back to Microsoft products again.

        • +1

Best Windows is the one without auto-update.

        • Source, please :)

      • They've also been cut off from Intel but you'd think all that'll do is make the supply of Matebooks dry up which shouldn't reduce the price.
They might even get more expensive.
That's just the kind of risks you take when you live in the high stakes world of laptop buying

        • +1

It might make warranty difficult if Huawei can't get parts.

The desireability of the brand will take a hit knowing Huawei are effectively going out of business. That might reduce prices.

          • +4

@lostn: You are buying from Amazon, I think you be safe. Worst case if theres any issues and Amazon can't repair, Aust laws will force them to provide a refund.

The Huawei Matebook X is unique, the only high end 13" 3:2 laptops out there. Rated one of the best laptops last year by some reviewers. It'll become a niche laptop and will definitely fetch a high price when stock dries up like all niche things.

        Can’t perform a web search? /s

    • +15

There is a possibility a trade deal is reached and the shutout ends.

It's pretty obvious Trump is blacklisting Huawei for political reasons not security reasons. The official reason given was 'national security' but he has gone on record saying the Huawei decision can be reversed with a trade deal. If there was a genuine risk to national security, why would you ever reverse a ban under any circumstances? And why would you change your mind and grant a 90 day grace period? They are supposedly spying and stealing your secrets.

      • -4

Think it’s mainky about the copyright of us not recognised in China, and China just blatantly copying us goods

        • +8

          Banning Huawei doesn't change that.

      • -4

        China Bans Google,
        China Bans Reddit,
        China Bans Facebook

        crickets

        US Bans Huawei

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

        • +3

China banning google, reddit,fb only affects the Chinese.

The US banning Huawei screws over the globally spread Huawei owners who can't get device updates and increases the oligopoly of the big mobile tech companies and allows them to globally increase device prices, but EPIC meme dude!

        • -2

Google and Facebook are just taking and selling your information. The only reason is not banned in West is because government can have access to it. Meanwhile China probs not, so they had to ban it and create their own service to do the same.

Google/reddit/facebook are all software based company which is kinda different to Huawei.

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: Video Game Consoles? Up until recently mind you, but the damage is already done

    • The brand itself should drop in price. All their products will have less demand hence reduced prices

    • This makes no sense. Is not like Australia block windows updates servers.

      • -4

Nothing stopping Microsoft black listing their devices on Australia based update servers, pretty easy to identify their devices and block them. They could blacklist the licences sold to Huawei as well. Never underestimate Trumps level of stupid

        • They won't prevent updates. They will just prevent new laptops from being sold.

          • @lostn: How can you be so sure?!

            • @goraygo: How can you be so sure?

            • @goraygo: Well I can't be sure. But google said their ban would not affect updates of existing devices. Which would mean that Trump did not order them to stop supporting existing devices. If it applied to Google, I would assume it also applies to Microsoft.

    • +4

It doesn't affect existing devices, only new ones. They won't be able to license Windows for future laptops when the shutout begins. But if you already have a device, you will get updates.

    • +1

Amazing laptop, one of the best I've ever used (purchased this in March). But you're spot on about the problems. Software isn't the issue, it's hardware.
If there are hardware issues now and into the future, how does Huawei replace parts they no longer have access to?

  • +5

The more concerning part is this one:

    0 Hz Intel Core i7

How long would it take to boot up at 0hz?

    • +8

Maybe Intel join the ban, and turns the hidden switch to turn off the processor. 😂

      • Lul 😂
        And whopping 0TB RAM

        • While apple says we don’t know anything about computers, to make it faster let’s add 1.5tb of ram to our computers

      • seriously though, how much RAM is there, and how do you know?

I think that the Razer Blade Stealth deal for $18xx was better but it only lasted 2 hours.

        • Core i7 version comes with 16GB, as I know.

Here is another link give that suggestion, too.

    • +1

      you don't boot it up.

you crank it 'round till it starts spinning on!!

  • +1

    Summary:
    Screen Size 35 centimetres
    Screen Resolution 3000X2000
    Max Screen Resolution 3000x2000 pixels
Processor 0 Hz Intel Core i7
    RAM 0 TB
Hard Drive 0 TB Solid State Drive

    😂

  • +1

0 Mhz is the latest nanotek.
it basically means infinte number of calculations per second.

you cant even google about it because its so fast

  • If only they had the grey one at this price!

  • +4

    Matebook, targetting aussies?

    • no, trying to rhyme with Macbook mate.

    • Matebook, targetting aussies?

It's based on their Mate line of phones which they've had since 2013.

  • -2

Yay! does it come with 2 or 3 free backdoors?

    • Yes, as do all Intel processors.

  • The specs are there and they are solid. Why the heck would Amazon fire sell this and lose margins? Future products Huawei will have to work something out to buy from tsmc for AMD chips or something. And you can release a PC without windows. A PC does not necessary HAVE to have windows to sell.

They will have a way, dont worry about that. This thing has become over exaggerated. Kinda exactly what Trump wants.

    • +2

Future products they'll work something out to buy from tsmc for amd chips or something.

TSMC is only a semiconductor fab, they do not design x86-compatible processors. AMD is an American company so they too have to comply with the ban.

And you can release a PC without windows. A PC does not necessary HAVE to have windows to sell.

What OS would you suggest they use? Do you really think a typical consumer would buy it?

    • +1

A PC does not necessary HAVE to have windows to sell.

I don't think a Linux based laptop has a market.

They will have a way, dont worry about that. This thing has become over exaggerated. Kinda exactly what Trump wants.

The only way is if they build their own desktop OS. I don't see that happening. And if they did, only China would use it.

  • +4

If you want this laptop, you should definitely buy now. Huawei won't be able to get supplies to build more in the future.

    • +1

And when the laptop breaks, no parts to fix it. Is it still a good buy?!

      • +1

Most parts are sealed/ soldered in. Wouldn't be able to be repaired in the first place.

If it's a warranty repair. If they can't repair you can get a refund.

  • -3

This is the best deal ever.

    • Microsoft had it for the same price previously. I wonder if it'll drop any more from now on.

      • +1

Microsoft store has pulled the entire Huawei notebook offline now.

  • does it come with a microphone? asking for a friend

  • +2

Anyone able to spot the space gray model for 2099?

Can't seem to find stock coming direct from amazon.

  • +2

Bought recently from Amazon for a similar price, after ms stopped selling it. Great laptop.

  • +1

Too bad can't get our hands on 2019 version. 4 lane PCI making full use of thunderbolt would be awesome for this machine.

  • +7

I have this laptop and it's the best laptop i've ever had. (and i've had a lot of windows and apple laptops). I love how the almost bezel-less screen and the quality of the build.

Disappointed with all the issues going on with Huawei. They make great hardware.

  • +7

Ban or not Ban,this price is hot as. US still can't compete with huawei's 5G in any way, let's see how they play in the future

  • -6

Brand aside, there are better options for the price

    • +2

Hmm, do they have the same build quality, excellent screen, Nvidia GPU, 1.33kg weight, and long battery life? What are those options?

The new Samsung laptops look good, but the 13" model doesn't have a dGPU. :(

      • I've one in mind, but not to everyone taste, Asus UX433FN. Since it won't charge by USB PD, just by tradition power brick and no Thunderbolt 3 port. Otherwise, a nice ultrabook.

One other option is Razer Blade Stealth Graphics Model,

        • It definitely looks nice, but I don't think I can ever buy a laptop without a touchscreen again.

The Razer is good too, and has a more powerful GPU, but it's $2779 and doesn't have a touchscreen either.

        • Quite different to the Matebook. The Asus screen is nowhere near as bright, much lower resolution and isn't as good an aspect ratio. Good looking laptop but the Matebook is the better machine.

With the Huawei issue though the Matebook may not be the smart choice, with a question mark on future hardware warranty issues..

  • +1

This is an amazing machine. If I didn’t need thunderbolt 3 (4 lanes) I would’ve bought this instead of the recent Razer blade stealth (2019) which got delivered today for $1875.00 the other day.

The RBS is amazing. Solid machine. Only issue is screen size, its super small. At 1.33kgs at 13”3, its dwarfed by similar ultra books for the same weight, fitting in a 14” (or close to it) in a form factor of a 13 inch body. That’s my only criticism.

Apart from that, i appreciate the 4Gb MX150 (handy for light photo and video work). seriously though, if this deal was for the (2019), no questions, hands down, would’ve bought the Huawei MateBook x for sure.

  • Was borderline ordering it before i realised its the 2018 model :(

    The ultrabook hunt continues

    • I was interested in the 2019 model till I found out the price has gone up. To me, the changes aren't large enough to warrant a $600-800 (depending on sales) price difference, so I went with this one.

The 2018 model was AUD$2599 at launch here. The 2019 model costs US$499 more than the 2018 model in the US - that's AUD$733 more. It's probably safe to assume if/when it comes out here, the price will increase by the same amount, which would make it $3,333 which is approaching the $3,799 price of a similarly-speced Surface Book 2. Even if it drops to $2,700 on sale, I don't think the $605 premium is justified for my use. It all depends on how the laptop will be used I guess - how much are those 2 extra PCIe lanes worth to you? :)

      • The ability to run a Razer core x with a decent GPU (not going to rely on the MX250). Also, was planning to wait for the release of the Mate 30 later this year, to take advantage of the full NFC Huawei eco system…but seeing how i wont be getting a Huawei phone, i guess having the same brand laptop wont be an issue. Hence why the trade off and going with the Razer blade stealth. I mean the display and screen of the MBXP is gorgeous, hard to go pass 13.9 inches with 3:2 ratio. Would be great for my day to day office work and content browsing, but i am using it for a secondary function with multimedia on the weekend, so i suppose the MX150 4Gb will hold for now. Happy to use the RBS for 1-2 years, to see the Huawei dust hopefully settling by then…cant believe one person held the power to literally destroy the second largest phone manufacturer in the world, pity coz they make great latptops.

        • Oh a whim i just picked up a last gen razer blade stealth manufacturer refurb for $1100. i7 16gbram, 256gbhdd, QHD monitor… and i hope i dont regret this decision (though the Intel HD 620 gfx dont excite me)

  • Is this way better than XPS13?

    • +1

When I purchased mine, I considered both this and the XPS 13. All reviews say the quality of this machine and the specification makes it one of the best. If you get a chance, check them both out in person and you'll see the differences.

I found that the screen was much nicer on this one and it felt a lot more solid.

      • I have an old XPS13 (2015). I feel it is quite clumsy and build quality is just okay, nothing fantastic, but I am actively looking to upgrade there is a good deal. My old XPS13 is 4GB ram lol

  • Love it how Huawei names their laptop Matebook Pro like Macbook Pro lol

    • +1

It's based on their flagship Mate series of phones which they've had since 2013. e.g. Mate 10, Mate 20 Pro, Mate X. This is a flagship laptop so it makes sense.

'book' isn't exclusive to apple, it just refers to 'notebook'. e.g. Asus Zenbook, Samsung Galaxy Book, HP ProBook, Lenovo YogaBook, etc.

Their design, on the other hand… ;)

      • -1

Yeah I get it, however the name is "inspired" by Apple yet again the CEO of Huawei seems to be a fan of Apple too
