I don't know about other people's experience but I tried these out in JB last week and the was a distinctive low end "warbling" sort of sound when the noise cancelling was on, like it was struggling to adapt to changing external sounds (low frequency, anyway).

Is that a problem anybody else has noticed?

The noise cancelling was nowhere near as effective as the Bose or Sony headphones either but I wouldn't expect it with such a price difference.

I have a set of Audio Technica M50s (wired) at home and love the sound but I couldn't bring myself to buy the ones I heard last week.

Well you are paying a third of the price of the other ones so…

Should not be happening regardless of price. Especially from a reputable company like Audio Technica.

I believe this is how noise cancelling works. It's apparent even in my Bose QC35

Ummmm nope, that's not an issue on my QC35.

Note, I tried four different brands of noise cancelling headphones in JB that day:

      • These Audio Technica ones
      • Sony (WH-1000XM3 and an older pair, I think the WH-CH700)
      • Bose QC35
      • Some Skullcandy ones

Bose and Sony ones were very good, with significant noise reduction and almost no perceptible low end throbbing / warbling sounds. I'd rate the Sony 1000XM3s as more effective from my test in that particular environment - maybe 90% reduction, compared to the Bose at about 80%. The older Sony CH700s were probably similar or maybe a little less effective than the Bose.

The Audio Technica ones were reasonably effective (maybe 50%?) but added the weird sound - not as noticeable with music playing but really distracting with the noise cancelling active but no music.

The Skullcandy ones didn't have any noise cancelling artefacts that I could hear but they probably only dropped noise levels by about 25% so not particularly effective.

Anyway, just my experience. Different people are probably sensitive to different frequencies in different ways too - I can definitely hear the distant thumping of EDM music at a party when my wife can't hear anything.

    "Conclusion
While a pair of AT's latest might cost $100 more than the Bose QC35, the added features such as customisable audio pass-through, 35-hour battery life, and the dedicated listening button, the ATH-ANC900BT is unquestionably worth the few extra bob to be your new travel headphone.
With a healthy dollop of bass that doesn’t detract from the excellent Audio-technica house sound, and noise cancelling that competes and exceed the performance of the big boys, ATH-ANC900BT deserves a StereoNET 5-Star Applause Award."
