  • I’ve got Optus NBN setup at home. It comes with the NBN modem, and a WiFi router. The router is a problem, slow speed, dropouts, etc. Can this router on this post replace the problematic router? Thanks, appreciate it!

    • Are you on FTTN?

      • I’m guessing yes, it uses an old Telstra port.

      • +1

If he has a modem and router he's on HFC

    • +2

Yeah should be a noticeable upgrade as the Optus Sagemcom routers are terrible. The only thing the TP-Link won't do is VOIP if you're using it.

    • +1

Yeah this will be a solid option for sure

    • +2

I have one of these as a Wi-Fi access point, and it has good range. I can get decent speeds at 30m range, through 4 internal walls, 1 brick wall, with 4m decline, in the colorbond shed.

      • same here. great range and never drops out.

    • +4

So do this if you want to keep your voip.

NBN MODEM -> Optus Router (VOIP PHONE connected, wifi off) -> TPLINK ARCHER C9 for all other devices, wifi on.

      • +4

Just be careful of a double NAT and DHCP in this case

      • yes this will work, i have the exact same setup.

  • difference between this and the TP-Link A9 AC1900?

    • I bought the A9 recently, and the main difference seems to be that the A9 has newer hardware, and the C9 has an extra USB3 port (the A9 only has a single USB2). So if you're sharing a drive you're probably better with the C9, otherwise the newer hardware of the A9 (longer service life and longer manufacturer support) would be the better option.

I bought the A9 for $135 on an ebay sale, so they have a very similar price.

Mine works for 3 yrs now and all led lights suddenly stop working but it is still functioning as a modem wifi router.

    • I have a similar experience with a D9. Also similar age.

      • Mine has done this too and it’s not quite 2 years old.

      • This article does not apply to the C9. There is no option for LED in the System parameters

    • Blue LED's have a shorter lifespan compard to red, amber or green LED's, don't know the reason why but I've noticed the same trend on computer hardware, RGB keyboards and even christmas lighting
      https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/3ugqnj/e…

The blue LEDs on my TPlink D9 router/modem combo also started to dim after about 2 years, by the 3rd year I would assume the LED's will have completely gone dark

      • what about white? I notice VR600 is on white, and has option/button to turn it off.

        • White is basically a painted blue.

    • Mine also has been over 3 years.. LEDs went dim over time.. still functional but very hard to see as they are too dim.. other LEDs which are not on all the time (such as the one for USB) still turns on at full brightness..

But as router has been great, never missed a bit.. a massive upgrade from any ISP router..

    • I've had a number of TP-link modems and they have all lasted to about 3 years then died . Never been an issue as there has always faster wireless/newer tech but not so much anymore .

    • Same.

Mine also brings up Quick Setup every time I login to the router.

  • some options:
tp-link vr400 or vr600, they are all NBN technology ready (FTTN compatible) and I bought VR400 $85 and VR600 $95 but no VOIP port.

    • I don’t need VOIP port, just want a good connection. Is the VR400, VR600 or C9 a better choice?

      • i have both vr400 and vr600, both are good for less than $100.

are you on nbn FTTN or adsl 2+? if yes, then you have no choice, only vr400 and vr600 can support nbn fttn and adsl 2+.

  • I have TPG fttb NBN and I was unable to use this router unfortunately. Apparently it does not support this NBN type? If anyone knows how to use it this way, please let me know.

    • you need tp-link vr400 or vr600, both dropped under $100 before, refer my comment above.

      • Thanks for the tip, will be looking out to buy one of these when a deal come up :)

      • I have VR900, I don't have NBN yet, but according to Officeworks, it does support NBN fibre to Node connection.

    • Isn't this just a router? You still need your NBN modem. Why wouldn't it work?

    The marketing:

    1.9Gbps

    The reality:

    Maybe 0.25Gbps.

    • +10

Friend, 1.9/8 is 0.2375. So yes, its 0.25GBps

  • Friends, the marketing is a bit dates: "Supports 802.11ac standard-the next generation of Wi-Fi". The next generation is ax, which has been slow to roll out.

    • +3

Well it was release in 2014, so…….

      • There have been 5 versions over the years . The latest version 5 which I assume this is has 258mb where as the version 4 only had 128 .

  • +1

Just be aware tplink is not so good on firmware updates, like Asus

  • Only issue I had and others have with this modem is the 2.4G drops out every now and then on auto and dedicated channels. 5G works fine. Nothing to do with firmware.

    • +1

      Stop using your microwave

  • +1

Anyone running third party firmware on one of these (DD-WRT, OpenWRT, etc)? If so, how are you finding it?

    • +9

It doesn't go anywhere, it's always just on top of the fridge where I left it.

    • +1

Dd-wrt. Works fine - maybe 5+ years straight so far with no issues. No different than my aus rt ac68u in terms of performance and features (that I use). Latest firmware released 30/5 is very solid for mine (v1 hardware).

      Use cases:
Policy based routing with openvpn client (had a roku that would only ever go through the VPN based on its up).

      • Perfect. I've flashed DD-WRT on it and policy based routing sounds like what I'm after. Thanks!

  • +1

Is this alright for HFC NBN?

    • I also want to know as well.

    • I would like to know as well please

    • I would like to know as well please.

    • +2

Yes. But you will need to use NBN Modem. You cannot directly connect this to wall socket.

      So,

Wall socket -> nbn modem -> tp link archer c9

If you need to use your ISP's voip, please check my comment above.

  • I have one of these with a snapped antenna. Any idea where j could get a replacement…?

    • Should be able to just unscrew it and replace with any other antenna. Preferably 9dBi as that's what this is using.

  • Is this one a lot better than a Tp Link Archer D20?

    • D series being ADSL routers. D20 is AC750 compared to C9's AC1900 meaning slower wifi on 5GHz.

      • I currently have a D20 and i'm on a 50/20 MBPS FTTP NBN plan. On mobiles or laptop i get a speed of around 43 MBPS in the evenings. Will using C9 be better in this scenario?

        • It won't get you to the full 50mbps speed of your NBN plan as there would be different factors in play. On paper the C9 would provide better 5GHz coverage.

  • Please confirm for those who have Optus HFC NBN. I have the Optus supplied modem S@gecom which is the biggest piece of trash for Wi-Fi. How well will the C9 replace the existing terrible wifi signal I am receiving?
Can I use Getflix to change the DNS on this or does it need to be through the optus modem (which is not possible) as they provide settings to do change it.

    • +1

I'm not up to date on HFC NBN but it it's anything like HFC cable configs, then if you're not using the sagecom for VoIP calls, then you should be able to set the modem to bridge mode and use the c9 as the router. In that instance you will be able to configure getflix to work.

  • Careful with the description guys:

    "Supports 802.11ac standard-the next generation of Wi-Fi"

802.11ac is not the next gen WiFi. It's actually quite old now. WiFi 6 is out on 802.11ax which is next gen.

    • It was in 2014 which was when this router was released and marketing material written ;)

      • Which is why im saying be careful.

  • How would this compare to a TP-LINK TD-W8970 router? Not really so tech savvy on router specs if anyone could help :]

    • +2

This would be much better as it would at the very least give you the less congested 5GHz frequency range -> better connection -> better speeds whereas your current device only has 2.4GHz (max of 300Mbps but doubt you'd hit that).

      • Thank you so much!

      • Reckon it would also make my Download & Upload speeds better in general, or just a faster Wifi Connection? Cheers

  • I had setup this router for my parents in Canada last year and I find it's quite decent in terms of reliability. Rarely have they ever had to power reset the router at all nor did it drop connections. It doesn't have all the options that one would want like on a modded Asus router though (i.e. having a VPN setup on the router itself).
Regarding speeds, I was hitting between 400-500Mbps on my iPhone (has 4x4 MIMO) about 50 ft away (was still getting full bars). It was more around 200Mbps at around 100ft away (a few walls). Max I could ever achieve on our gigabit connection was 920-930Mbps on LAN through my computers.

  • Have this running for 5 months now, never have any issues and range is acceptable.

  • would this support fttn connection?

    • Friend, you'd need a modem as well. This is just a router.

  • +1

Officeworks price matched this for me, bringing it to $122.55. The store I went to (Garden City) only had the v3 revisions, but I don't know the difference between that and the latest (v5)

    • Same here from Officeworks. I've got a v4. To get DD-WRT, is it as simple as flashing this (https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/?model=Archer%20C9%20(AC1900)_4.x) via the webgui?

  • Can anyone confirm this is FTTN compatible?

I have the Archer D9 and it's only FTTP enabled. Might be worth confirming before buying as a lot of residential NBN connections are FTTN.

    • The C9 is not FTTN compatible. For FTTN need the VR range.

  • Would this be an upgrade over my Kogan supplied TP-Link VR500v? I get good speeds downstairs on that router, but it's worse than my pre-nbn connection upstairs due to its new positioning. Would this help at all?

    • If what you're lacking is wireless range, you need to find a way of extending your router's range either by setting up a repeater / secondary access point, upgrading your router to one that supports mesh network or by using powerline adapter.

  • Bought the last unit at Officeworks on Elizabeth St, Melbourne CBD for $122.55. Very easy to setup, and change SSID to match with previous SSID so that I don't have to reconfigure my devices. However, my PS4, which connects to it via LAN via powerline adapters is only getting 5Mbps :S When I have it connected via 5GHz WiFi, it went up to 22Mbps. Why does it do that?

  • For those that are using Optus HFC with their garbage Sagemcom Gateway F@ST 3864, I bought the C9 archer yesterday and hooked it into the Sagecom Modem and turned of the Wi-Fi. So, Wall socket -> nbn modem -> Optus Sagecom Modem > tp link archer c9
I'm on 100/50 mbps NBN plan and the C9 is awesome. My Wifi was receiving approx 50-60mbps download speeds on 2.4Ghz but when I switched to 5Ghz it was almost like being hard-wired to to the modemn. I was receiving 93mbps/40mbps.
I'm in a 2 story house and the 5GHZ is the only wifi connection for the entire house with very low drop in speed (except devices that cannot use 5GHZ).
Highly recommend getting this if you're stuck with your ISPs pathetic wifi modem. I also have an upstairs wifi modem that is hooked up to a powerline adapter and C9 wifi (which is sitting downstairs) is probably triple the speed I was getting with the upstairs modem.
FYI Getflix can be setup fairly easily through the C9 router.
    Hope this helps

Make sure you disable DHCP on the C9 archer and set it a static IP address on your LAN for easy management (I like to use .254 as second router as it's at the very end of the Class C network and won't conflict with addresses handed out by the ISP router)
