unless they upgrade the basket size or offer naked portafilter, still better to buy the cheaper old model when they inevitably go on sale

mine still rocking strong after 3 years

if youre worried about shot to steam warm up time. Just buy a $20 aldi frother to do ur milk concurrently

    • +1

its only $100 differance would go new model

      • +1

        100$ difference now

before the old model has started its clearance sales

    • +5

If your seriously comparing a milk frother to texturing milk properly with stream I think that about sums up your opinion on making coffee.

      • -4

yeah man one comment i made on the internet shows i know nothing about making coffee

the point wasnt about efficiency of time over the 25% noticeable difference in froth

if your goal is to save time and make a decent cup. then what i said above works fine 90% of the time. If you want to fine tune everything and have 10 mins spare to wait for the boiler to heat up and make steam, which i only do on weekends and not during morning rushes. Then both versions do just fine
this is ozbargain. $70-100 difference makes a difference to some people

Now if they had included a bigger basket in this model for the new price, it would be a no brainer. It wouldnt even cannibalise their dual boiler model

but go on, tell me about how the $100 difference in old vs new model is going to make your latte more superior

your comment is the equivalent of wine snobs thinking they can outtaste everyone in a blind test

      • exactly!!

    • have to disagree mate, 878 has volume control brewing instead of old time control in 870, its more forgiving in brewing and much faster brewing and steaming. not that old one is bad, with that price difference I would go for new one every time. I wouldn't bother with naked porta on a budget 54mm machines thou. If you like some coffee porn gotta go all out Italian.

      • its a great feature for sure

but for the average joe buying a mid range manual machine they wouldnt really use it

this is the perfect model for those who buying anything higher thant he dual boiler model would be overkill for
but also wouldnt want to use the shitty entry models

        This has everything you need

At this price point its worth the extra 100 bucks. but all im saying is that this is ozbargain and everytime breville releases a new model. Its almost always followed by an awesome sale on the old one that will widen that 100$ gap

  • Is there any benefit taste or maintenance wise of the dual boiler over this?

    • +1

Only the slight convenience of frothing your milk at the same time

    • +2

Coming from an owner of both bes920 and yes 878, taste definitely a notch better on Bes920. The steam is dryer and stronger which gives me better control of steaming, and extraction seems to be more consistent with BES920. BES878 do win on start up time, definitely churn out a nice cup of latte much faster than 920 from cold start. The final taste difference would be comparable to commoners unless you r super picky coffee snob.

  • Every Christmas time the bes920 is always around $700 from HN.

I'm worried with these machines due to the lack of control, dodgy grinder and no manual button.

I think these are being made extremely cheaply…

    Bes920 currently $799:

    • I've had a BES870 for almost 10 years and the only thing that has broken is the shot timer. I have to time it manually sometimes. The grinder is consistent and set and forget. I only change the settings if I change bean type. I'm looking at upgrading to a BES878 just to have faster steam warm up time. Also I wouldn't have the bench space for a dedicated grinder. If this design is good enough for the Oracle then it's good enough for me.
