  • Can someone give a quick rundown on the difference between this and the old Wii? Might sell the original and get this.

    • +2

Two completely different consoles. This is the next generation with an entirely new lineup of games on it. You can play your Wii games on this as it's backwards compatible too. So don't sell your wii games.

      • +1

Thanks. I grabbed one, should be a bit of fun, and great that is has HDMI port. Wonder how much I can get for my Wii on ebay.

        • +4

Probably around $30 with a controller

      • +1

Have original wii and still used very often by the younger kids (under 4) who have difficulty playing games without simple motion control.

They don't have the dexterity to use standard controllers but get enormous enjoyment from playing the motion control classics like wii sports etc.

Does WiiU fully support motion control for these games?

Also they love DDR and my wii has the game cube ports to attach the dance mats.

Does the WiiU have the ability to use DDR mats for example through an adapter?

    • +2

And this is why the console failed. Too confusing naming convention. What were they thinking.

  • Thanks bought. Let me see what I can do with it.

For those who encounter error when check out, try to select another stores for pickup. It worked for me.

  • Is it just the color and storage size that's the difference between this and the basic?

    • Yes. Well originally the black pro came with a plastic dock to sit the screen controller in as well.

  • +8

Boo. Bought this for full price directly from EB earlier this morning.

I know I have the option to collect my EB order, then refund it straight away, but with the additional waiting time and hassle to staff I might just pretend I never saw this deal.

    [OzBargain Licence Revoked]

EDIT: just bought it again via eBay to possibly save $23.60, or fail miserably and end up with 2 Wii U Consoles and a loss of $94.40.

    [OzBargain Licence Status Pending]

  • Why am I getting 'This code can't be applied to your order.' when apply PRELUV?

    Edit:
Set my address to the US ages ago. Works after set it back to AUS

  • +1

where can i get some cheap controllers from so i can play with all my friends???

    • Surely they record the serial of each unit? Otherwise to easy to exploit.

      • -1

Are they etched into the case itself or just stickers?

In any case, if I really wanted, I could swap the cases of them anyways.

So annoyed too because I finally got around to hacking the thing to play Wii U games off a USB and it's awesome. Now I have to do it all over again, and remember how to install the tablet forwarder thing for Nintendont, ugh. I hate doing tech shit, I'm honestly almost inclined to just eat the refurb fee so I can be lazy.

    • +9

Except for the whole fraud thing.

      • -2

"EB are Satan, remember?" - Literally everyone on the internet when I try to defend them while having great deals like the V-Buck trade in deals.

"What your doing is fraud and evil and you're worse than Hitler" - Literally everyone on the internet when I (profanity) with EB instead of getting (profanity) with by EB.

        You can't win 'em all.

        • +5

It's really not a hell of a lot different to shoplifting, except you are probably less likely to get caught unless they track serials.

          • -5

            @Gravy: You're not wrong, no.

But then, I would argue their price jacking, manipulation of deals, and many other shoddy practices would also borderline qualify to be classed as thievery.

            So I'm basically Robin Hood.

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: Nobody says thievery. It’s theft. It’s to do with making a gain by deception, that’s against the law.
You can’t be an equaliser for their shoddy practices. Do some work and get the ACCC involved if you think there is a problem. Otherwise you’re just scamming for your own gain and that is not Robin Hood. They fined Kogan for dodgy shit recently

        • +3

lol fraud, nice. Don't try justify your crime by saying "it's a shop that sells overpriced stuff anyway". Based off that, let's all go rob all the high end designer brands.

    • Besides being deceptive and fradulant, it's a bit sad you want to take advantage of the few gaming retailers we have left like that. This is a great deal as it is and the rare occasion they have a great deal for gamers and you want to take advantage of them like that.

  • bah, I bought a wii of the eb games sale several months ago and still havent set up the hacked / modded part of it. Now this comes up, worth getting this over the Wii if i dont have any games for either but was going to mod?

    • Yes, the Wii U can do everything a modded Wii can do plus play Wii U games. HOWEVER a Wii (if the old version not the Mini) comes with ports for GameCube controllers, on Wii U have to buy a separate dongle.

      • One of my wiis does have the gamecube ports on it, but i am not sure i will ever use them, i dont have the controller anyway and any games.

  • +3

Just bought this even though I definitely don't need it. Always been curious about the Wii U gamepad and really keen to play BOTW and some older titles!

So thank you, but also damn you OP /OzBargainer's Curse

    • hahahaha SAME! really dont need one but why not, it'll be fun.

  • If you are playing co-op with someone at home, do we need two of these or just one?

    Thanks!

    • +1

Only one tablet can be connected to a console at any time.

You can buy as many controllers as you want though. There's official Nintendo "Pro controllers" that are wireless and a lot like a 360 remote, with a fantastic battery. There's knock off ones of those. There's any remote made for the Wii, a lot of of Wii U games will use those too, then the Wii Classic controllers also will work at that point depending on the game.

Long story short, there's a lot of options. I'd say hunt down a cheap Pro Controller or knock off PC for however many people you'll be playing with. Also the GameCube controller works on some games but you need an adapter, check out a thing called Nintendont as well if you wanna play literally any Game Cube game on it, they work with just about any controller you can throw at it, including PS3 even, so with that, no matter what contollers you have lying around, you're bound to find something worth playing in two player.

      • Thanks! It sounds like one console is needed and you can play with as many people as you have controllers for.

I thought it might have needed two consoles and two game pads for two people to play!

        • Nah nah nah, one console is all you need for local multiplayer.

      • Do you know if these dongles/adapters support using dance mats for DDR that use the GameCube ports?

        • No idea my man, I only had a PS2 that generation so I have zero experience with anything GameCube outside of playing them on my Wii U and other emulation devices. Sorry.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: I'm talking about the game cube ports that were on the original Wii.

You use those to connect the DDR mats to the Wii.

You mentioned a game cube controller adapter:

"Also the GameCube controller works on some games but you need an adapter, check out a thing called Nintendont …"

So was wondering if i could plug the DDR mats to that and then to the WiiU

  • Anyone know what would be the best value controllers to buy for this? I’m assuming you can play up to 4 players?

    • Check facebook market place, there's a bunch of various Wii and Wii U controllers for bugger all money near me

    • OG Wii controllers work on Wii U.

    • I'd probably grab the official ones, which are excellent. $28 seems fair - https://ebgames.com.au/wii-u-160874-Wii-U-Pro-Controller-pre…

If you want to play Wii games consider a Wii remote as well.

      • +1

        Thanks for the link.

I'm worried when it says on the eb games description that "*THIS CONTROLLER COULD BE A THIRD PARTY MODEL. COLOUR CHOSEN AT RANDOM AND MAY VARY"

        Any thoughts on that?

        • Go get one in store so you can check before hand.

  • +5

Come on EB Games! Dump the Vita's! I want one for cheap!

    • Hahaha I'm waiting for this to happen too

    • +1

They probably haven't because there are very few left. There's like a 1/2 dozen Slims and maybe 20-25 original models per state if you're lucky, and like zero proprietary memory cards to be had. $200 + scrounging around for a memory card (30-50 more bucks for 8gb) is a potty amount to spend on a console that will be utterly redundant if one of the upcoming new Switch models is fully portable and clocks in under $300.

  • thanks OP! just bought 1 from ebay, but not sure if I can trust if my local store actually have stock…should I order another one (via post) just in case?

    • Give the local store a call to confirm :) They generally process the orders pretty quickly for C&C, so I reckon the order would already be in their system.

      • thanks for replying, mine didnt include it! i just emailed them on ebay

  • +21

OK here it goes for all the newbies asking the questions. I bought one of these a few months back when they had them on sale for $168 which at the time wasn't too bad. Anyways I picked up instore and unfortunately they all seemed to be pretty scratched up and or dirty too. A sticker skin set was provided which mind you is pretty flimsy and doesn't stay on for long. There's much better quality ones available out there on ebay but there pretty expensive for some reason.

Anyways I modded it pretty much straight away but as someone who has modded alot of other types of consoles in the past including alot of wiis its certainly not as straight forward as it appears to be. Alot more things can and do go wrong such as freezing and or bricking the consoles even tho you followed the guide to a T so to speak. Mind you after modding so many Wiis I'm yet to see a single one have any issues whatsoever while doing it.

Youtube is your friend as well as the gbatemp site for all these needs. They are worth buying especially at this price point. Can play upto four players in certain games. They also make for some pretty decent retro gaming if you want too.

As for finding cheap controllers either use ebay or buy second hand wii systems with them. I was able to buy a few deals with atleast a few wii motes a while back.

Hope this helps out atleast someone on here.

Thank you for this write up, extremely helpful!

      • Your welcome :)

    • Do you recommend a certain video tutorial which you had the most success at modding?

      • +6

        https://wiiu.hacks.guide/

        Use this guide.

        • +2

          ^ This

          • +3

@bennythejet: Yeah I second that too.

If you want to use YouTube I recommend watching the Jack Sorrell homebrew guides.

        • Is there any downside to hacking? Is it reversable? Does online still work?

          • +1

@cyrax83: Online is almost dead as all the good online titles have been movies to switch. The reason you should be modifying this is to play "backups" of gamecube, Wii and wiiu, you can also download virtual console games (N64, snes, nes and more)

I wouldn't reverse it as it makes this console a lot better. I've modified 3-4 Wii u consoles and never had an issue.

            • @J6: "backups", sounds like you're a real stand up guy there Ronnie.

          • @cyrax83: Not really although honestly I haven't tried to play it online after. As far as I know most types of consoles once modded aren't really safe to play online. There are stealth patches bla bla for some consoles but most of the time they do end up getting banned at some point.

In theory yes it should be reversable although I'm not too sure tbh.

          • @cyrax83: It should be reversible. You need to make sure to backup a number of files though - outlined on the website listed above. There is always a chance of bricking your system though, I have never had this happen though. Also ensuring you use the right hack for the right software version is important

        • The guide suggests using a 64GB SD card, whereas an online search suggests wii u not supporting more than 32GB. Any ideas which way to go?

          • @joshmachine: The idea is that you want at least double whatever your system has. Basic Wii U use 16gb SD, premium Wii U use 64gb. Mine has 64gb sd, no problems.

It's worth mentioning that you will want a proper external HDD that has it's own power source for storing games. I think that's because you risk the sd card failing with extensive use.

          • @joshmachine: Yeah I've also used both 32gb as well as 64gb on it without any problems.

      • +1

I would recommend checking out Modern vintage Gamer's channel. He looks at mods, homebrew and gives good insight in an easily condensed video.

    • Smash Bros even supports eight players - four with GameCube controllers (through adapter), and four wireless - mix of wiimotes, gamepad or others.

I just received this email. Anyone on the same boat?

    Hello,

We are reaching out to you today with some very unfortunate news.
Due to an error in our system your recent order for the Nintendo Wii U Premium Console (Preowned) was processed incorrectly.
The store you ordered with does not have any stock to fulfil your order, however, you may have received confirmation advising otherwise.
Please do not head in store to collect your order as we will not be able to fulfil it.
In this case you will receive a full refund of the funds you have paid back to your account.
We want to sincerely apologise for this issue and any inconvenience it causes you.

    Kind regards,

    • Use delivery

    • I just ordered another one to be picked up from another store…will see

    • Me. I just received this email too

    • Same email. No offer to pickup at another store even though several stores showed stock nearby. Poorly handled.

    • Both shops now saying they don't have stock for pickup

However being offered to be sent to my nominated address free of charge. All is good until when it arrives and have the physical conditions checked

  • +2

If I didn't have a hacked switch, I'd probably buy this.

    Great deal

    • What does your hacked switch allow you to do? Last time I checked it was very early on in the features.

      • +1

Allows you to get and play every game released that doesn't require online access

  • None available for pick up in SA from what I can see.

Anyone ever used this and is it worth it?…

"6 month breakdown cover from Virginia Surety - AU $8.94"

  • I ordered one 10mins back and is ready for collection, chermside 4032

  • Picked up mine. Few superficial scratches on game pad screen but nothing major. This was the last one so couldn't swap it

    • They all scratch eventually. They have very glossy plastic which shows up any minor scratch.

      • get a screen protector

      • On the screen?

        • Yeah I misread your original message sorry. I thought you were referring to the console/gamepad plastic. Didn't realise you meant the screen. But regardless the gamepad screen does scratch pretty easy too (especially when using the stylus). Best to use a screen protector to minimise any further damage. They are pretty cheap on Ebay.

  • Can’t seem to see any “click and collect” option, do I need to be in QLD for that?

  • +2

Click and collect doesn't seem to be available anymore.

    • yup delivery only now

  • Just picked one up now, screen had a protector on it, and EB's extra protection screen protector over top - so that was good.
Other parts are pretty scuffed and grubby, there's paint or white out all over the motion sensor bar…
I'll Frankenstein the old Wii I bought a few years ago off ozB/EB games for peanuts and have a pretty good set up overall I think!

  • Whats the best memory card to use on this? Or should I say cheapest?

    • Use a USB or external harddrive.

      • Are they all compatible? The Wii accepted only specific drives

  • no more left

  • how do we charge the game pad??? the charger isn't included so we gotta buy a new one?

    • +2

There should have been two power cables in the box, one for the main unit and one for the gamepad.

      • perfect they just organised me one for pickup after a few calls!

  • Dropped into my local store. 3 in stock. Decided to buy when back in the office.
    Now it's out of stock.
    Any work around anyone knows?

  • I got mine, it's in pretty average condition and quite a few scratches on the controller screen, must have been owned by careless kids. But if it works it works.

    • apparently the digitizer can be replaced for like 10 bucks on ebay part, but cbf, or easier is replacing the entire LCD assembly $30

I just got a $3 screen protector from the recent ebay promo and gonna call it a day
