I don't know if I'd trust Pioneer with solid state storage. Or any storage for that matter.

    • +3

I wouldn't trust anyone with any storage. Backups are they only thing I trust with important data

      • Well said mate, backup is the first thing I do each morning with my laptop

      • Obviously but I'm not even sure I'd trust Pioneer with cold storage.

    • +5

Ironic. Pioneer used to make one of the best CD and DVD burners. They were really into the data storage scene as one of the best.

  • Pioneer as in the audio eq manufacturer ?

    • +6

Pioneer as in the Chinese owned brand name, which was formerly owned by the Japanese audio equipment manufacturer.

The DJ stuff is still "real" Pioneer. I think the car stuff is the same.

The home audio - receivers/amplifiers and the like - is a bit in the middle in a joint venture with Onkyo. Still perfectly good stuff, but more same-same than they used to be.

Pretty much everything else is someone licensing the name. TCL had a license at some point, don't know if they still do.

        • As a former Pioneer employee at 200X. I worked for car entertainment R&D department. I Can confirm that all low end car audio systems in the market are OEM. High end they have huge stock in Japan and made in Japan. Pioneer killed themselves in two ways: 1st Not register the patent of color screen on mobile devices. They own grey screens patent in old days.2nd producted high quality of PDP TVs which is unbreakable and they sell the price higher than SONY.

    • he’s , used to be huge in laser discs, cd players, cd rom drives …….they has lots of patents and made great products ….

Many years ago Pioneer made some good quality stuff, but these days their car audio and home theatre stuff is shit. I wouldn't trust storing valuable data on their SSDs.

but these ssds are just 3rd party chips soldered together

      what could go wrong

      • could be all cheap stuff soldered together by sub-standard factory.

    • Can confirm Pioneer have gone down the toilet.
2 Years ago i pulled a Pioneer headunit from a car mostly because it was a clunky piece of crap to operate, and a firmware update (which i did, and it didn't help much) involved Pioneer 'snail mailing' me an SD card which i then had to mail back to them.

Just a few months back my Pioneer VSX 921 receiver shat itself with a message on the display, googled the message and was horrified to find that pretty much every model with a certain chip in it has failed or will likely fail at some point.
With most of the units out of warranty and Pioneer pulling out of the A/V Receiver market it seems there is little recourse.
(Some Pioneer designed Onkyo units affected too)

Given these and other events it's unlikely Pioneer will ever see my money again.

      • You should give the distributor a call and complain - for Pioneer that's PowerMove - they might still cover the repair cost since it's a known issue. The 921 is from 2011 so that might be pushing it a bit, but can't hurt to shoot off an email at least.

Just FYI, the problem is caused by the switch to lead-free solder which is more prone to dendritesthat cause short-circuits. Paired with ever shrinking ICs with densely spaced connections hidden underneath makes it more likely to occur.

Removing lead from landfill causes more landfill as things break sooner than they should. Which was always known and considered before it was implemented. That's why things like airplanes are exempt and still use lead solder.

    • Yeah I had Pioneer amp and CD player in the 90s, was considered pretty good gear then.

Also had a Pioneer DVD burner back in the day, which was one of the first made. Cost me a pretty penny from memory, around $1k lol

My last 2 AVRs have been Yamaha and now Denon, didn't even consider Pioneer

      • Hmm.. lesson learned, planned obsolescence is a must to survive.

Pioneer's 5.25" DVD burner and player were pretty awesome back in the day. Since then… I haven't heard much about Pioneer.

    • They were good.. were.

I miss the Japanese brands of the 80's.
Innovation and engineering was at it's peak.

Current Sony and Pioneer engineers stand on the shoulders of giants…. and crap all over them.

      • That's just nostalgia.

Current products are cheaper and better than anything from the 80s. If you showed any modern technology to an engineer in the 80s I guarantee they would not feel crapped on.

1980 to 1989 the world went from VHS to… VHS. From tube TVs to… tube TVs. Innovation wasn't any more impressive than any recent decade, you're just comparing the entirety of the 80s to what feels like happened recently.

It's just like 80s music seeming awesome because all the crap songs have been forgotten.

        • 80s music IS awesome!

          • @chromium: The 80s music we remember is awesome.

The 80s music no one listens to anymore was god-awful.

  • The logo on product, and box make it look like a fake copy almost.
245 reviews from Amazon US seem to think / agree it’s good quality though.

    Forgetting the branding and owner, the drive seems to be a good performer;

I would recommend waiting for one of the many EBay deals and buying a Samsung 860 QVO cheaper. At least then you're buying from a reputable manufacturer who controls every aspect of the device (design->Fabrication->Retail).
