  I suspect these prices are in preparation for the new cut down Switch which will replace the 8 year old 3DS.

    Um, no. The regular Switch already replaces the 3DS as far as games go. Sure it sucks for portability given its size and battery life, but that doesn't change the fact that 3DS games have essentially met their death (as far as production goes), with only about 2 games worth playing coming out between 2018 and 2019.

    The not-yet-released Switch has nothing to do with this price markdown. The 2.5 year age of the game, the fact that the Switch has "dominated" the 3DS in terms of Nintendo's attention, and the number of new Pokemon games that have been released after Sun / Moon, however, are more-so the reasons.
