Noice! Glad I refrained from the 20% off last week….

    • +8

      Except prices are now RRP.

Edit. For the TV show I was interested in.

    • Yep, thanks OzB commenters.

  • +1

    OMG finally its back!

  • +1

    nice

Hope Amazon is going to do something to match.

BOGOG = Buy One Get One Gratis?

    • +1

      Gratis is underused.

      • Ah it's been fixed to BOGOF :)

  • +1

I have 8 4K titles, just got a 4K TV. Now for more titles (and then something to play them on)

    • +1

I have bought heaps of 4k titles lately when about $15 or below. Great bargains to be had

    • +10

Xbox One S is great value if you are into gaming as well as being a 4K player. Grab a month of Game Pass for $1 and go nuts.

      • -1

If not into gaming the controller can be a pain so best to get a 4K player.

        • yeah I am into gaming, but I have too many consoles (no XBOX) and just built a gaming PC.

How does it go with 4K upscaling for 1080p?

          • +3

@giventofly: The upscaling on the Xbox 1S is quite good from my experience

          • +2

@giventofly: Media upscaled looks fantastic on the Xbox One S. My standard blurays look better than they ever did through it.

          • @giventofly: If you have a gaming PC I'd say just wait till the PS5 comes out next year and grab that for the playstation exclusives and 4K player. Majority of the xbox titles are already on pc.

            • @vlahka: Any word if the PS5 will play PS4 games?

              • @giventofly: Nothing 100% but I'm pretty sure they said it would be backwards compatible. Most likely to do with everything being on their digital store now instead of using just discs which in the past they would have had to reprint older titles and that just wasnt worth their effort. Hopefully september we'll hear more at the tokyo show. I had been planning on grabbing a PS4 for ages but I guess I'll wait till the new one since its not so far away.

            • +3

@vlahka: Why bother waiting? The main point is that they’re after a 4K player now, not an unknown amount of years later when the PS5 comes out.

              • @theguyrules: Well thats their decision. I figure if they havent got a 4K player yet and have been collecting 4K titles anyway, whats so bad about waiting a little longer? Mind you if they have a gaming PC one would imagine the monitor SHOULD be a good size. Cheaper to get a temp 4K bluray drive for the pc if they need it. Can always hook the pc up to the tv too. At this point I'd see an xbox as a pointless option.

                • +1

@vlahka: Waiting for the PS5 is an even stranger option, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

                  • @theguyrules: Oh the wait is still long, no argument there. If moneys not an option then grab an xbox now and ps5 later.

                    • +2

@vlahka: To be fair, I was looking at upgrading my XB1S to the X until I realised that new consoles are around the corner. And I have a PS4 Pro.

        • +4

The media remote for the xbox works really well, for that use.

          • +3

@theguyrules: Second this. Got a 3rd party PDP one from EB that works great

        • +1

The 4k playing ability was what helped to sell me on getting an Xbox One S quite a while ago, like many here. The only problem that we have now is that the Xbox can't play movies in Dolby Vision, which has become the most desirable format for 4k. Most people would probably rank this as a first world problem, however if you're going to blow $2-6k on an OLED TV and start spending a few hundred bucks on discs, you may consider investing in something a tad better with nice remote etc. I managed to pick up an LG UBK90 4k Blu Ray player for just shy of $240 on eBay (RRP $399). I just attached the Xbox to one of the other tvs around the house for utility, so no problem. I just had to upgrade out of curiosity but perhaps could have made do with the Xbox and plain old HDR. However, I also read some reviews saying that the LG unit was a bit better at upscaling too. My advice would be to do your homework before you buy a 4k player though. I was exposed to so much false advertising for other players than the UBK90 along my journey from salesmen, websites, store labels etc. that made false claims about cheaper or older players having Dolby Vision. There was one mainstream player that suggested it had Dolby Vision, but you actually had to download newer firmware to instal it. It was reasonably old and I couldn't see the firmware available on the corporate website, so I contacted the company to ask and they couldn't tell me whether the firmware was still available directly from the box. I dropped that idea there and then, given the lack of support. Sorry for rambling, but I hope the description of my journey helps others save some time and money, while avoiding some of the traps.

  • Anything else decent in the catalog?

  • +13

They increased the prices of a ton of Blu-rays the day after the 20% off sale ended. Logan was $15.98 (without 20% off) and now it's $19.98. Deadpool was $15.98 and now it's $24.98. Deadpool 2 was $15.98 and now it's $34.98. Hopefully there'll still be some stock with the old stickers.

    • +8

I pity the staff members who had to re-sticker it all.

      • +1

        They dont bother

    • +1

Can't something be done about that? ACCC or something?

It's why I like Amazon now - Ant man and the Wasp is still $20 on Blu & $24.99 on 4K.

      Sometimes, I really hate JB.

      • Actually Ant man and the Wasp 4K and some others were $20 until a couple weeks ago.

    • +1

      "Deadpool was $15.98 and now it's $24.98"

This title and the others mentioned have been FAR CHEAPER with the B2G1F deals + 20% combo - you could have picked THIS title for less than $9.

There are going to the the 'whines' about the prices rising - however this B1G1 sale is only good IF YOU KNOW YOUR PRICES and you follow all of the deals over the months.

  • +1

Nice! Glad I kept my purchase from the last 20% off unopened with receipt

Time for some 4K Marvel goodness

  • +6

I'll be buying from Amazon this year as they will halve the price on their movies instead. This saves you making multiple transactions as JB only gives you the cheapest item(s) free and their sticker prices vary too much.

Also a good time to sign-up for the Amazon trial for free delivery if you haven't already

    • This, they'll be my first point of call especially with cashback and free delivery too.

  • +4

"As usual the deal is already online after 5pm on the 15th May aka Wednesday night" - Ok Doctor Strange

    • +2

Op has viewed 14,742,109 instances of Wednesday 15th May at 5pm and only once did the offer become available… hopefully the stars will align properly so we can all save some cash.

  • +6

And of course they’ve hiked prices back to RRP. Ant man and the Wasp 3D was $18 a few days ago, now $45; 4K version was $22, now $45. There are many titles where the better deal was found with the 20% off for Mother’s Day.

    • +1

Can't something be done about that? ACCC or something?

      • Yup. Stop shopping at JB. “Something” done.

      • No. JB now have a disclaimer everywhere stating "this item may have been advertised for a cheaper price" after their last run in with ACCC.

  • +1

Lolz Ant-Man and the Wasp 4K Steelbeek that I bought in the last 20% off is not showing on JB Hifi website - get page 404

Ant-Man and the Wasp 4K Regular Edition increased from $27 (before sale - $21.50 after 20%) to $45?? Wut??

  • I hope I'm not the only one with a 4K TV, 4K UHD blu-rays… but no 4K blu-ray player :(

    • +3

I bought cheap Xbox One S from Amazon when they were doing them for about $179 minus cashback

      • +1

I did the same. In December I brought the Xbox One S Minecraft edition for $199 for my son. Gave it to him 2 weeks ago for his birthday and now loving this 4K sale.

I got the Avenger Trilogy and Dark Knight Trilogy on 4K for $59.

    • I'm in the same boat. Been waiting for the PS4 to come out with a 4K player. Guess that won't be happening now.

      • You think the PS5 won't do UHD?

        • +1

Mark Cerny has confirmed PS5 specs 8k video output, psvr compatible, PS4 backwards compatible and UHD disc drive

      • Sadly that won't ever happen. Sony have separate market for their 4k player. They X700 is pretty popular and cheap but as same price as XB1s.

    • If you are into gaming get the XBox One S for under $300. If not a gamer get a 4K player as the controller will annoy you for playing movies.

      • +2

They have the remote but you need to buy separately.

      • +2

I don't play games at all and still bought Xbox One for 4K movies. I generally use the xbox app on my mobile as it has a remote feature, which is very easy to use. Using the controller is bit painful but definitely manageable.

        • Oh really?

I never knew this - will make watching movies a bit easier on the XB1

          • +2

@PepsImax600ml: Yes, works well as long as your mobile phone and Xbox are connected to the same Wifi network.

    • Lol, I am exactly the same.

    • I have no 4K/UHD Blu-ray player because I rip all of my UHD discs to my NAS and play them on my 4K TV with Plex :)

      • How do you rip them, if you don’t have a 4K player?
A 4K reader is still technically a player.

        • +4

As I understand it you don't need a 4K/UHD player/drive, just a drive that supports BDXL with the right software and keys.

It won't play discs, but it can decrypt them.

          • @ChiefAJ: Oh awesome! I might look into that.

            • +2

@theguyrules: Check out DeUHD, MakeMkv, AnyDVD, and DVDFab for some options. They will list compatible drives.

        • +2

Sorry I should've clarified that. I have a regular LG WH16NS40 Blu-ray drive that I bought a while back for $80. While it can't play UHD movies from the discs (it lacks support for it), it can still read the discs and I can decrypt them for free with MakeMKV. Although, I really should buy a licence for MakeMKV since I've used it for so long. The guys that develop that software deserve it.

      • +1

+1. I have over 120 4K titles ripped onto my Plex server.

YOUI customers can get 7.5% off jb hifi $100 egift card or 10% off $200 from 14th May to 19th May.

Captain America Civil War 4k: $25
Captain America Civil War DVD: $30
    Captain America Civil Blu-ray: $35
    Captain America Civil Blu-ray 3D: $40

    They've gone nuts

    • From a supply and demand perspective it would make sense.

I figure more people still buy blu-rays than 4k discs

      • Most of the 4k movies also include a bluray copy too so not really

      • +1

According to JB themselves DVD's are still the most popular followed by BR (some distance behind) and then 4K are their worst sellers.

        • +1

Yep, we live in something of a bubble - everyone here knows how to use a computer or smartphone, and so we know the difference between DVD, blu-ray and 4k, at least in vague terms. A HUGE proportion of the population just have no idea.

    • Madness!

EB has 'Captain America Civil Blu-ray' for $15

      • +1

Rogue One is at EB Games for $12.01.

    • +2

      Should see Star Was titles….

The Last Jedi - $38.98….for the DVD!

      • +2

        Was planning on getting Solo.
        Was $24. Now $44.
        Pffffffffffffffffffffttttt Nooooope

  • -1

What do you mean about the deal being online the night of the 15th?

    • +1

Deals like this tend to go live online once the stores close, the night before the actual sale start date.

    • Last week's 20% off deal began sometime Wednesday night, even though it "officially" started Thursday.

  • +4

    WTF

    Guardians Of The Galaxy - Vol. 2 4k - $49.98

    Before: $24

    • Weird pricing. This is what I purchased in May 2018

      https://imgur.com/ytZvnwN

      • Ah yes around $29, but it was not $49!

    • +1

yeah i just looked for that too, insane. gross.

    • +1

It's $24.99 at Amazon. This title has been quite cheap in the past, like $12 or $16 during Amazon sales.

    • +2

Same thing with Thor Ragnorok. It was around $25-$30 and now it's $56.98!

  • Marvel movies just buy from Amazon

    • +1

Seems like they haven't jacked up Captain America 4K yet

  • Thanks OP
    Been waiting for this

  • +1

    Does this include box sets?

    • YES.

  • +2

Vote with your feet… Or mouse. I remember buying a lot of items in this sale 2 years ago, when they didn't jack up prices..

  • +2

A lot of titles usually can be found for less at other times (due to the increased price to RRP like others mentioned above).

However, it is great for the ones that are usually sold at close to RRP, such as box sets, Studio Ghibli's works, and some Disney titles. Amazon has been very competitive in the past in matching or beating them, so checking before buying often helps.

    • Studio Ghibli's works,

Pity the 'deal' on this finishes tomorrow… but yes, look for those titles/sets that barely get discounted.

Edit as well - use the Price Deals on BLU-RAY.COM

https://www.blu-ray.com/deals/?category=bluray click on the Aussie Flag for Amazon AU prices

      • Yea the BOGOF usually works out a little bit better, if one has more than 1 item to get.

        E.g. The Wind Rises blu-ray: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/movies-tv-shows/movies-tv-shows-on…
Currently discounted to $25.89 (from $36.98), RRP is $39.95 so effectively $20 at BOGOF.

I used the deal to get the Anniversary Edition of several works last year (?), which I have not seen them for cheaper anywhere else. (Even Amazon didn't match it)

    • I'm in the market for some LOTR and Hobbit boxed sets. Do you think this deal is the perfect opportunity to buy those sets? Might even do Harry Potter

      • +1

After the deal goes alive, check whether Amazon matches it (maybe give it one extra day to give staff time to set prices). I usually check eBay and just google to see if there are others sellers doing lower. If not, then I'll go ahead with JB HiFi.

      • +2

Amazon is upping the game, hope you can find the sets you wanted =)
