For those that care Blaupunkt is German for Blue Dot (hence their logo)

    • +17

Blaupunkt as I knew it went bankrupt long time ago. Now just a brand for a Chinese OEM.

    • "Since 2011 however, the entire lineup is Chinese sourced."

kgb007 has a point, you make it sound (I am sure without intention) like they are a german company (and they are) but their products are all Chinese.

It was without intention. I was merely translating the word to explain their logo and their historical origin.

    AVOID

I bought this TV last year, well the 55" model.

It is a truly dreadful TV. So bad in fact, the online seller I purchased from urged to return it, which I was most willing to do.

This is a generic cheap Chinese TV with Blaupunkt stamped on the front.

    The negatives :

    • Ghastly GUI. The most ugly gui you've ever seen, slow and unintuitive.
    • awfully uneven backlighting
    • cheap and nasty generic remote
    • feeding a 4k signal via hdmi would make the TV crash.
    • very unnatural colour. Oversaturated.

Thanks! I was about to buy it when I thought I would just come back and see if there are any negative comments.

Thank God….. I'm still haunted by this TV, and I returned for a full refund 5 months ago.

I suspect they are just "dumping" them now at any price they can get.

        • You can't really blame the manufacturer(s). It's really Big W and JB Hifi etc who sell such low end products to capture a market niche, i.e those who want a cheap second TV or those sucked in by a brand name they associated with quality 40 years ago, and end up "buying a pig in a poke"

    • PS

Oh, one last thing…… You can't watch this TV from a side angle….. Viewing this TV from any angle other than "front on" results in a very dark muddy picture.

      Anyway, caveat emptor.

      • The TV looks like a 2", when I look from the side

    • 50"
      4K
      $395

Did you take that into consideration?

It's important there's someone pushing boundaries. Can't all be paying double.

The report I was given by the retailer was that despite being 4k, the TV actually could not handle a 4k input without crashing (reported by all users using 4k input devices). That was my experience and the reason why I was refunded.

You'd be better off getting an aldi panel for marginaly more.

          Followed up with great info!
Seems rare in these parts. Thanks.

          • +1

@Ulysses31: In fairness, there is a chance the 4k crashing could have been solved with a firmware update, but there is a greater chance it hasn't! In any event, you'd still have a very poor quality TV.

  • Blaupunkt as I knew it went bankrupt long time ago. Now just a brand for a Chinese OEM

Is that kind of like Volvo owned by the Chinese or Land Rover owned by the Indians

ie is it going to be a quality "German" tv or a cheap but functional tv

    just read AVOID's comments now

Land Rover owned by TATA, a reputable company. If you are not aware, know the facts before commenting.

      • +2

Both Volvo and Land Rover make cars I cannot afford, because standards have been maintained despite a change in ownership.

Which is precisely what I was asking re: Blaupunkt- would I be getting a German tv or a cheap Chinese tv with a German badge

Land Rover owned by TATA(en.m.wikipedia.org), a reputable company. If you are not aware, know the facts before commenting

Thanks Jeeves. I was actually in India when Tata Safari was launched

  • Since its in store at JB go and check it out

If you're old enough to remember when Blaupunkt was known for great German engineering, it's disappointing to see it slapped across substandard products.

    • +1

I am old enough, and that was what made think buying a blaupunkt TV was a safe bet. How wrong I was.

But outside of the big 5 TV manufacturers (Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense, TCL) I suspect all tvs are now just rebranded generic Chinese products (of varying quality).

      • +2

I wouldn't call Panasonic Tvs rebranded generic Chinese products.

        • I wouldn't call Panasonic TVs rebranded generic Chinese products.

Ok, let's include Panasonic….. but the likes of JVC, Philips et al are now all just rebranding companies, at least when it comes to TVs.

        • A few years ago Big W sold a Panasonic branded 42" TV. It got rubbish reviews and rumour has it that it was a market test for low end Panasonic TVs and was just a rebranded OEM tv.

    • Happens a lot… JVC, Teac, Akai also were once a premium product. Business closes and they sell the brand to anyone who wants to buy it and then it is used to con suckers for years after. Nothing new.

    • Somewhat true ….. I remember my parents bought a Blaupunkt TV in 1979 for $999 (pretty sure that is right). It was an abolute dud and we were sending it to the TV repair shop at least once a year.

  • 55" 4K TV with 60hz refresh rate.. ?? Nah! Just another throw away TV.

  • is blaupunkt the replacement for soniq?

  • So our old 40" FHD tv died (1117-ADJ chip, lifted trace off board), and we wanted a cheap replacement.

Was prepared to go get a TCL or HiSense, but ended up with the Blaupunkt 50". Whatever the issues are with the 55" they aren't on the 50" in the same way. Good colours, even backlight, native UI is reasonably responsive.

Haven't tried the Android Smart TV stuff as i use either the XBox or ATV for that, so no comment there.

50" is a decent buy if you want a cheap TV.
