This or vodafone tv for $72?

    • +1

This is android 8.1 and vodafone TV is android TV 7

I think vodafone have stopped supporting the vodafone TV as no need updates have been released

    • only downside of the vodatv is that it cant use SBS on demand and i think 9NOW as well, two of them it cant use anyways..

Oh, I wish it could also record/pause live TV… but other than that its good.

only downside of the vodatv is that it cant use SBS on demand and i think 9NOW as well

Both of these are now available in the Play Store (meaning all 5 FTA catchups are now available).

I wish it could also record/pause live TV

It can record, but the EPG is limited to now/next, and Live Channels normally crashes when playing back recordings (you can use Kodi though):

        https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2714884&…

        • hmm they weren't a few weeks when i checked (vodafone TV), couldn't even side load it or it would crash… Interesting, I'll check again tonight and provide feedback!

just to clarify, is Kodi the app that crashed, but can record, or is there some way to record live TV (nativity)?

          • @wisc: Use Live Channels to record, and Kodi to play back.

            • @kirt: nine now still not there.
on the upside SBS on demand is though

              • +1

@wisc: Maybe 9now hasn't "propagated" to all boxes yet, but it's available in the Play Store on both of my VTV's (and the same for a bunch of guys on Whirlpool).

I actually got an email today from Nine saying it's also now available on the Shield.

You can also try installing it via the link below:

                https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.ninenow…

                • @kirt: I looked it up on the play store so would have thought it was a playstore thing rather than a box thing…

will let you know how i know for interest when i check again…

haven't tried the live TV recording yet, will be interested to see how I go with that.

I picked up this box after my last Android TV box failed and I can say that this one isn't too bad (much better price than I got it for)…installed Kodi and other apps and its working well…

  • How is this? I have the Mi Box 3 and still have wake issues, 4k playback issues… this or VodaTV?

  • Can you cast to this like the Vodafone TV box?

    • The eBay details show it as having Chromecast Built-in.
I don't think this box has a TV tuner for FTA though.

      • nice. thanks hotphil

Yes its google cast. Not chromecast like other keep saying

It wont support Netflix casting, but does work with youtube, google music and stan casting

A few pros for the Mi Box vs Vodafone TV…

    Mi Box pros:

    • Refresh rate switching
    • Android TV 8 (still not sure this is a pro?)

    Vodafone TV pros:

    • Ethernet
    • TV tuner
    • Aussie power supply
    • Local 2 year warranty
    • Better remote IMO (dedicated app buttons / tactile buttons / more buttons in general)

For the Mi Box (and the Shield), there is now a "Refresh Rate" tool available that allows you to set a default refresh rate per app (which switches automatically), and assign a button on the remote to bring up an OSD menu for quick manual in app refresh rate switching:

    https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1105215/shield-tv/-…

Also, link to Android TV apps for 9Now / Foxtel Now / Amazon Prime etc:

    • So what would you choose between the two? Also, Google I/O 2019 is this week, do you think anything new for Android TV will be announced?

Just moved and got me a HiSense TV. Kinda want a box to hook it up and currently doing my research. I saw this and it always gets compared with the VTV.

      • +1

I guess it depends on a few things:

        • Do you need the TV tuner?
        • Do you need refresh rate switching?
        • If your wifi is sh!tty, would you be happy to spend another $15 to $20 on a decent ethernet adapter for the Mi Box?

        …etc

I have both the Mi Box and Vodafone TV, and the Mi Box is currently in the draw (saying that, I use a Shield as my main media box, with the Vodafone TV in the bedroom).

Good point about Google I/O - might be worth hanging out a day or two:

Google confirmed that new Android TV hardware is coming soon. Apparently, we can expect new hardware announcements “in the next couple of weeks” with more devices arriving in the fall.

        https://9to5google.com/2019/04/30/android-tv-new-hardware-ap…

        • Thanks mate, I really wanted the Shield but it's been out for a while. Might hold off.

      • I wouldn't expect an android TV box from google, as they are more focused on chrome cast hardware.

They will be announcing android 10 for mobiles, so would hopefully expect a new android TV version to be coming out not long after which hopefully the Mi Boxes and Nvidia Shields will update to quickly.

This comes with an AU Plug not adapter.

Ethernet on the vodafone is only 10/100. The Wireless is AC1200 which is actually faster

This has extra buttons to the old mi box

    • @kirt Without sounding like a total bludger, can you share your default settings for apps? I'm keen to give this a go as i think Netflix on the shield for some content was kinda crappy looking in panning shots due to the frame rate vs hz. I think this is due to 23.976fps @ 59.94hz?

      • +1

The main ones would be Netflix and Amazon Prime, which you would set to 23.976 Hz, as a majority of content on those services are 23.976p:

        https://i.ibb.co/jvRCPGw/Refresh-Rate-20190409-173933.png

…but you can manually switch to a different refresh rate easily if needed by using a mapped remote button or the shortcut on the homescreen.

I leave Kodi and Plex as Default, as they have their own inbuilt refresh rate switching.

        • Thanks so much. On the VTV mapping to a button is probably easy enough but dang the shield doesnt really have any. Guess i really need to get one of those cheap mini BT keyboards?

  • Anyone else notice that the VTV has issues waking up from stand by? I've had to resort to fully powering mine down for it to work between watching.

    • Yes. It does take a while to wake. But after like 30s it comes on. Also I find when I play YouTube, it doesn't play for some reason unless I exit the video and go in again.

      • I find it just gives me a light blue screen and hangs. I like it now that I've worked out its kinks, but I was really close to returning it at one point.

        • I don't get either of those issues with my VTV. Well, maybe on every few months it doesn't wake up, but even my shield has that on rare occassions.

No issues with youtube at all on my box.

    • Mine resumes from standby pretty much instantly

  • Can I install VPN app on this one so that I can watch US content?

    • Should be able to (can do so on vtv and shield).

  • Do these type of boxes (and Vodafone TV) play 2160p mkv files?

    • Kodi probably does

    • On VTV yes kodi and plex, so should this

  • I have a minix neo ui i got a few years back was expensive at the time but one of the top models back then, probably been a few newer models since then.
It sits in the living area using with an older tv.
Looking to put the older tv in the bedroom and change around put a better tv in living area which is a cheapo but newer tv.
Moving into another property im sure there be tv point in both cinema room and living area but not sure about bedroom. We do have older apple tvs in all three rooms.

People talk about this compared to Vodafone whats the difference or what should i get if one of the rooms dont have a tv point then it be required yes for Vodafone box.
I forgot to mention still using a set top box to view tv in living area buti see they are becoming less of a thing or harder to buy i got one of them 6 yrs ago to get tv when i had no minix etc.

Be good to have tv,kodi etc in all rooms,tv in cinema has built in android so dont need a box for there.

Hope lol this all makes sense.

  • I'm not clued up well on these boxes and I suppose there are alwYs newer and better ones out each week but how does this compare to say the.

    A95x max or x96 max

Or is this one listed here just as good what's the pros and cons of these machines? Obviously the one one here has discount with eBay but bang for buck or extras I'm curious what's the better buy. This does come with au plug.

    Thanks
