Why are 4k players still so exy :(

Better upscaling on some is one of the few reason I can see someone buying these now and maybe better support for some of the obscure audio/video formats.

Also, some people would rather have a simpler UI of a player than a console. So yeah, there is still a market for these which means they can charge whatever they want.

    • The competing Sony unit (UBP-X700) remains stubbornly in the $300-350 range, occasionally dipping to around $280 (what I paid just after it came out a year ago). Figured it'd be much cheaper by now and that I'd have bought a second one.

      • That Sony unit has in the past been commonly found on their ebay store refurbished for around $150 when they're part of the regular 20% off sales. I picked one up a few months ago, it has performed well.

        • Damn, maybe something wrong with my eBay search alert as I don't think I've seen it show up in their eBay store more than once or twice. That store is how I previously picked up a few of their non-UHD players really cheap.

          • @Jabba the Hutt: I got mine mid January for $153. I’d seen it on there a few times during the 20% off sales before I picked it up. Back then I think the quantity available was less than ten. I see there’s none there now but it wouldn’t hurt to check as soon as the next 20% off ebay thing comes around.

    • Low demand for spinning optical media this far into the 21st century, so not much economy of scale.
      Everyone is streaming.

    No Dolby Vision :(

  • Can you change zone on these to play US blurays (not 4k) I have a mixture of au and us

I would say definately not, best advice imo is laser bd300 player for your different regions

    • You can get region free players but they're expensive for quality ones. I got a modified Sony for around $500 from a Melbourne supplier on ebay. (It was a shock to have to go back to the old days of modding players!)

Kinda think they would have given up on it by now huh… just burns those of us who want to pay for the media.

        • Elijha I definately know what you mean it sucks, for what its worth my laser player has played tonnes of discs from both US and hear and hasnt skipped a beat, the ui isnt as nice as my samsung but my samsung is currently faulty and cant read discs :P

        • All 4K Blu-Ray discs are region free and all 4K players are too but not for normal Blu-Rays or DVDs. Like usual all you need to do is put in a cheat code from the remote to change or bypass the zone setting. https://www.regionfreedom.com/index.php/enhanced-firmware/pa…

Region Freedom has basically all Panasonic models available for changing the region zone. I've been doing this for over 15 years with all kinds of players. They're able to play all regions just blocked by the manufacturer, so you have to type in the code to bypass it. Not hard to find codes for different players if you want to watch different regions.
