Received this email from Video Ezy for completing their egg hunt challenge. Possibly targeted but doubt it as it looks generic.

Anyone notice all new releases are in DVD, no more Blu-rays, even for action movies like Aquaman?

They have lost me as a customer.

They stock the DVDs of newest releases first, a few weeks before they stock the blu-ray (though sometimes they do skip the blu-ray entirely).

Not sure why, but I guess they don't care; they probably think people who only rent DVDs are their main market, and they may even be correct. People like you and me, able to use a phone or computer and who know the difference between a blu-ray and a DVD, may not be a big chunk of their customer base.

Most of us on OzBargain who use these like them because we like to watch movies on our home theatre equipment, where blu-rays look drastically better than streaming, but I don't think we're their biggest customers (and of course, we rarely pay full price).

Yes, Blu Ray's seem to be only older titles on my local kiosk. It's all DVD now, even the popular latest titles. I still grab them on DVD when there is a deal on, but only for movies I really don't care about picture quality. It's really only good for determining whether I'll buy a title or not.

You'd think Blu Ray would be a better investment long term because they are more resilient to scratches and therefore would have a longer life in the machine. I guess we can only dream of the kiosks getting 4K.

      • The old Blu-ray stock was inherited from Hoyts kiosk. Hoyts used to release Blu-rays regularly, but since the acquisition Video Ezy has killed this practice.
It’s a shame it’s impossible to rent a new release Blu-ray anywhere these days.

        • The Latest blu-ray on mine is Bumblebee, that's only a month old. I think they are still releasing them, just weeks behind the DVDs.
