Bank Charge Credit Card Annual Fees after Agree They Will Waive It. Options?

Hi Guys,

I got charged my annual fees for the credit card yesterday, last time I ring them to close it they said they will waive it so I kept the card.

So when I saw the credit card annual fees charge yesterday I called them and they said they can’t waive it. And i am told if want to close it today I will still be charged the fees.

What are my options?

Just close it and see the annual fee as a lost? Can’t keep the card as I need to apply for a loan soon as need to get rid some unused credit cards.

  • Ask them to review the audio of your last call.

    • I might just do that, I called them many times, I dont remember which month or day I called them regarding the credit card though.

  • U should record all the call from now on and tell the bank you are recording the call.

Call them and ask them for the reference number of your last call and if they don't waive then complaint to FOS

    • I might do that next time, cant really trust the banks at all

  • Is this ANZ out of interest?

  • just call them again, otherwise i think they are required to refund you the money if you choose to cancel the card

    • The first girl just starting quoting me their terms and conditions saying once the credit card fees are charged it can not be refunded.

I might try again and speak to a supervisor in charge.

      • The ombudsman will change their attitude very quickly

  • On a side note, which Mastercard/Visa Debt Card do you guys recommend with no on going fees and foreign exchange conversion when shop online?

I can only think of ING Direct. Anything else you can recommend?

    1. Ask the bank to explain why it's been charged when you were told it wouldn't be. Ask for a refund.

    2. If you're not happy with the outcome of Step 1, tell whoever you're speaking with that you'd like to have your feedback recorded as a complaint in accordance with RG165.

    3. If you are not happy with the outcome of your complaint (in Step 2) ask to speak with the bank's customer advocate OR go directly to AFCA.

Keep your cool. Keep notes as you go. This will be easy enough to sort out.

    • Thank you, I will do the above and see what happens.

  • How much was it?

When you say last time they waived it, do you mean last year? Normally if they do waive the fee, it's only waived for the current fee not for the life of the card.

    • Yes, last year and they said in so many words that they are happy to waive it as long as i keep the card and been a bankwest customer

      • Did you get it in writing?

    • @twinbag 100% reckon that’s what’s happened

Could it have been last time you went to close the card they waived the fee, but this is a year down the track and they won't waive it this year as policies or something may have changed?

You have to do it every year before the fee is due .
I remember something that they are not allowed to give you incentives to keep the card now if you ask to cancel
Was in the new credit card laws

    • You have to do it every year before the fee is due

Depends on the bank; I call after being charged and they credit it back.

    • I am gonna keep an note book on what’s due on when from now.

  • I work for a bank and I can tell you that banks only do good will gestures one time. If you ask for another fee waiver they wont accept it. It prevents customers from abusing the system. If you don't want to get the annual credit card fee charged, then just simply ask for the date it gets charged and close it before they charge you. Not sure why its so hard for people do to that and then they start complaining when they get charged. Theyre the ones responsible for what date they are charged your fee.

    • I had my annual fee waived 3 years in a row.
I am sure it depends on whether they want more customers or not or budgets etc

Have heaed many others who get their fees waived every year just by asking

    • Depends on the bank, I'd say. After getting my ANZ card's annual fee waived, the CSR said that it whilst the waiver was only for a year, if I call back next year, I can get another year of fees waived.
