  • Great price.

Comparison to the Yammy A-S301 needs a bit of clarification IMO as they're quite different beasts. The Yamaha has Digital and Phono inputs which the Pioneer lacks, but it doesn't have AM/FM tuner and BT.

Might grab one to replace the 70's era amp I currently use in our kitchen/family room which is playing up. Probably cheaper to replace than get it serviced!.

    • Your 70's amp would likely sound better though

    • Eeek! Don't chuck the 70s Amp Watts!! What brand/model is it, how is it failing and where are you located?

      • Just a budget Sansui receiver I picked up at an op shop a few years ago. Not sure of model but it's certainly not sought after. Sounds nice but not really enough grunt with only 12wpc so it's pegged for replacement anyway. Dodgy volume pot causing crackes and loss of one channel. Clears up temporarily with a blast of contact cleaner.

        • Sounds like a nice little 331! Granted, they're bottom-of-the-range but definitely not terrible and with a nice pair of efficient speakers it'll sounds good for decades more with a basic service. Maybe sell it as is for $50-80 and put it towards the Pioneer. If you're in/around Brisbane I'd happily give you fiddy for it.

          • @SteveAndBelle: Yeah 331 rings some bells. Paired with some fairly inefficient B&W 686 S1 and it's loud enough for the vast majority of our listening and sounds bloody good. A long long way from brissy unfortunately.

        • Don't believe the 100W per channel claim of this amp. It is measured at 6 ohms at a single frequency with one channel at 1% THD. It probably won't be any louder than the old Sansui in real life.

          • @alvian: I think what you mean is they are withholding the other figures (at 8 ohm / 4 ohm etc).
1% THD is quite bad I agree, but then again your paying for it.

            • @thebadmachine: I can calculate the other figures for myself and get a good idea of its power rating. If you like listening to a distorted mono 1 kHz sine wave, I am sure you can get 100W worth of noise out of the amp and a 6 ohm speaker. As soon as you feed it music instead of a 1 kHz sine wave, you will find the perceived loudness not that much different from the Sansui.

              • @alvian: Yes I seem to be burning out (too much ozbargain) as I posted this deal, when I would personally give it a miss as a purchase. I was on a subwoofer hunt the other night and it seems this behaviour is a possible side effect.

    • Leave radio behind with the quality of the Yamaha. Only send pristine signal through the components and out to speakers, the Yamaha deserves it.
BT on the Pioneer may be 4.2, but the bare minimum in codecs (limited to SBC & AAC).

Probably cheaper to replace than get it serviced!.

And yes we experienced it is cheaper to buy new models, then getting serviced/repaired.

  • **My model is slightly different from what's listed. I have optical in.
I got one of these for my desktop. Great little receiver.
I'm not expecting miracles but I don't want the legacy AM / FM components. Would've been nice if the front panel buttons were configurable.
Otherwise it sounds great and performs well.

  • No digital inputs? How quaint.

    • I use the optical input.
*Just noticed that my model differs!

    • Yeah in the stereo world you will expect a decent built-in DAC, so lack of digital input may be fine for those who prefer their own external DAC.

      • nah, in the entry level stereo receiver world I certainly wouldn't expect a built in DAC. Yamaha R-S202 doesn't have one either (more equivalent to this pioneer than the A-S301 mentioned in OP). Digital inputs for stereo amps/receiver is a fairly new phenomenon for the most part.

        • Yes you are correct, I have removed the comparison to A-S301 from the title. Just from the Pioneer’s limited power output specs I estimated the output at 8 ohms to be similar to that of the Yamaha. That is likely where most of their similarities end.

  • I wonder if Pioneer would give me a free upgrade if I bought this and complained it doesn't have the phono input advertised on their website.

"Sometimes you don’t need an endless list of features, but simply a good stereo amplifier with few control elements but sufficient connections, a phono input for the record player and a UHF tuner for your favourite radio stations. The SX-10AE offers all of that"
