Sorry but what a silly remark back - the OP was looking for an ereader and hence found this - makes complete and perfect sense. So your remark is poor and hardly helpful to the OP, who went to the effort of sharing the deal and the thread in general.

      • Kindles have a easier system to purchase books and has a larger mode accessible range.
It's like ipad vs generic android tablet.
If you're expecting the kindle experience on a kobo well you wont get it without using work arounds

Kobo has added Overdrive integration to their feature list which basically means that you might be able to rent books from your local library, if they are on Overdrive. So I guess, If you love reading, Kobo makes perfect sense.

          • @FlyFire: Direct download via Overdrive is only available on later models, not this one.

Kindles cannot borrow ebooks from local libraries.

          Kobos can.

    • I know, but it looks very similar to the kindle

  • anyone knows how does this compare to paperwhite, mainly for screen quality and backlight? I don't care much about Amazon books.
    thanks

I just bought the Kobo HD after owning a paperwhite 2 for years, so far I'm pretty impressed. I knownits not the same make, but sofar the software is a lot nicer than the Paperwhite I had. JB also match Harvey Norman's $138 online only deal for the ClaraHD.

EDIT: I should clarify, the backlight is awesome. It's got a handy swipe gesture to lower it withought having to go into the settings, too. And an adaptive blue light thing that turns the blue light down the later it is

It's somewhat apples with oranges - but with the regular Kobo Glo - I've found it superior to the Paperwhite's we've had (not latest water proof one but the two before that). The Kobo's just hold their charge a lil better and are more 'usable'. I find the 'screen quality' pretty moot as it's a 6" screen and you're viewing B&W text - so the HD vs normal is really splitting hairs and only noticeable on the odd illustration (which is generally still too small to view).

Backlight I find the same on both - again I am only able to reference old Glo vs old Paperwhite but I'd say the Kobo's are underrated.

SO do you load your own books on via a PC + Calibre?
Also can you load the library ebooks on?

If you like, or the Kobo software if that's your thing. If you're especially lazy and there's no DRM on your books you can just drag and drop.

Also can you load the library ebooks on?

Yes, you can. I have the Clara which supports Overdrive natively via the Kobo store (I don't know if this one does or not, I would be surprised if it didn't given that Rakuten own Kobo and Overdrive), so I can download straight through the device. Otherwise you have to use Adobe Digital Editions on your computer if this doesn't have native Overdrive support, your library doesn't use Overdrive or if you're getting a book from a non-Overdrive source.

      • library overdrive would be a benefit, as cant seem to get that to work with kindle

The new kindle has back lights. Just buy the new kindle instead

    • Yeah but how much is that?

    • Its still pre order at moment

      • It was released yesterday…err, I mean on the day you posted this comment.

Selling for $139 (or $132.05 with Cashback) but 167 ppi vs 300 ppi on the Kobo probably makes a difference

  • 139? Less with cashback

  • I have a refurbished Kobo Glo from JB HiFi since 2015. Still going strong and getting the latest update (no OverDrive).

At this price, would it not be better to pay a little more for the current generation of Kindle Paperwhite when it goes on sale at The Good Guys or eBay 20% off selected stores.

    • No overdrive?
