  • Do you guys have any open APIs?

      Thanks for your comment

Currently we don't have open API, but in future maybe yes

Yeah I gave up on home automation until all these companies can pull their finger out and create an actual standard. Every device you buy has to have another freaking app on a phone dialling to another freaking server in China.

Create a centralised standard that supports one profile AND that doesn’t require another crappy app or account, not to mention data security policies and no spying, and I’ll bite.

Maybe you need to run HASS on a raspberry ($25) to get a programmable hub

      • Only xiaomi items require external server access and even those can be blocked. As @kcbworth suggested, a hass server gives you a standard scripting environment to control most smart products.

        • Can be blocked but only after you first register them against your account, and if you ever need to reconfigure them. Plus there’s Ring, those Brilliant brand power points from Bunnings etc

      • Hass. It's gotten easier to set up theses days so worthwhile having a look into it. This switch doesn't look to be compatible though.

      • As other mentioned Home Assistant (HASS IO) is a good option that doesn’t rely on competing companies to standardise, which could take a long time if it ever happens at all. Been running this for some time and love the fact it drastically increases my options, particularly as an Apple user that wants to use HomeKit and Apples Home App as the front end. Allows for all kinds of non natively Apple hardware supported to be used.

That said I wouldn’t say Home Assistant is necessarily a simple option and to get more value out of it does require a bit of technical ability and/or willingness to hunt information down and follow guides. In particular you’ll probably very quickly have to get into editing config files which while not tooooo bad, has a particularly unforgiving formatting requirements and mistakes can stop the system from booting so it’s not entirely unforgiving. Backups are your friend with this one. Things like defining automations etc sort of rely on coded solutions at this point.

You could however keep HA pretty simple and just use it to expose the devices to another App, like Apples Home one, and configure automations etc there which while more limiting, is 100x easier to do.

I haven’t looked into them too much but there’s other options like Vera or Home Seer that cost much more but do a similar thing and I believe probably have more mature user interfaces.

  • Looking for HomeKit compatible switches.

    • Try homebridge

Sonoff t1 is around $25-30. These are around 4 times..
Is getting certification from au std agencies that high? Or is there a different reason?

    • Hi Sam

Yes there are a lot of reasons

The product you mentioned is directly from a overseas factory. Their products are not Australian approved and if something goes wrong there is no place to claim warranty and even insurance. And also I am not sure the service they provide is the same level as a local company.

Running a business in Australia involves different costs like bills, labor, storage, logistics, people's salary, insurance, services, marketing, tax and etc. it's not just the cost of physical product but also many expenses you can't see. Buying from a local company means supporting economy in this country.

We are confident with the quality of our products and all the materials being used are premium and it comes with 3 years warranty. Especially for electrical products the components used is really important and they determine the lifetime and of the product and safety of your family and property. We are not able to match prices with online or overseas sellers.
But trust me you get what you paid for.

      • Are they made in Australia?

        • No. Nowadays made in overseas doesn't mean cheap. Everything is going up. Especially for premium quality stuff

          • +1

@Ctec Sales: So, they are made in China & you are not supporting the local economy!
Anyways, best of luck with your sale.

            • @Sam816: It will be much more expensive if made in Australia. There are not many products made in Australia especially electronic products

  • -2

These would cost $2 to make, why are they so expensive?

    • -5

Thanks for letting us know they are $2 . Enjoy your day.

      • -1

Have you really not ever opened one up and itemised the components?

    • In reply to your previous comment: yes we do and we are familiar with most of the components used in our products. Even the plastic frame used in our products is more than $2 as it was imported from Japan not those crispy recycled plastics. Also the cost of glass panel is around $5 as we used the best glass with the best painting. Apart from these there are electronic components like relay, transformers, chips and etc they all with best quality. As I have mentioned above all the material we have used are premium.

manufacturing is no longer cheap these days and I haven't counted labor and other costs people can't see . Many workers and their families relay on these products to live their lives . We can do low quality cheap stuff and sell online at $50 but it's not responsible to the safety of our customers. Apart from all of these, we supply electrical wholesalers and lighting shops nationwide in traditional channel which means we need to keep the rules of pricing. Also I think you don't want to just buy a cheap product with low quality and being left unattended by the seller with no customer service and warranty and even from no where to claim insurance if something goes wrong.
      Thanks for your understanding.
