Samsung Galaxy S10+ 512GB $199 Per Month, Unlimited 5G Data (24 Month Plan) @ Telstra

230

Hi.

Thought this would be a great deal since the retail of the phone is "$1980" it self. Unlimited 4g data at Telstras best speed. No POS data. Then free upgrade to 5g when available so still unlimited I presume if you have service. If you want an unlimited data connection for home and can't get decent interwebs you could put another cheap Telstra sim in your new stupid priced galaxy. Good for people who have to travel for work to as you get 10gig a month roaming data

Mod Note: Both Own/Lease and 128GB/512GB appears to be the same price.

Oh and also. I did live chat and got it for $189. So give it a go.

    • +7

Oh that's fantastic! That only comes to $4,536. That's only $3,110 more than my current phone plan, and only $1704 more than both my phone and internet plan combined.

      ^Username checks out

  • +33

    Wow $4700 over 2 years.

    • +2

Think of the 45,700 points though!!
      That's enough for like a 10% discount on the S9 😂

      • Where'd the 10% on the S9 come from? I thought the examples were 25% off an S10 and 40% off an S8?

        • I was just taking the piss. But it's probably not that far from reality..

  • +3

*24 Month plan, so either $4776 overall.. or $4536 if you can get the $10 a month off…. and also the Unlimited Data <As according to the fair use policy is 12Gb or less per month>

    • +3

      Rofl 12gb

    • <As according to the fair use policy is 12Gb or less per month>

No - this is false. Even the cheaper Endless Data plans were shaped only after 40GB. This looks like they'll only do something if you're impacting the network. I know someone who's using it at their home in a router for their home internet.

    • Can you link to that as I can’t see it on the critical information.

    • +3

I used 580GB last month. I used 35GB a day sometimes. ROFL at 12GB total!

      • I used 1.2TB for 4 consecutive months…..

      • That's a lot of asian "music"

    • +2

Going by the live chat $189 deal, then sell the 5G phone for close to the retail price on day one, then effectively could pay sub $1k for unlimited 5G internet over 24 months. Cheaper and faster than my horrendous ADSL2.

      • +2

How will you use 5G without 5G handset if you sell your 5G phone?

    • you're giving me flashbacks to telstra liberty plans shudders

    • 12GB limit is fake news. Check out the Whirlpool thread where people are downloading 500GB+ per month on the plan.

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2741433

Only thing you have to be careful of, is not to put the SIM in a router or hotspot. They’ll shut you down.

$200 a month mobile plan. Wow. We definitely have a problem.

    • +5

I picture this as being a serious business person type of thing. Or lawyer.

      • +2

yeah those powerpoints and pdf's these days are in the gigatonnes

        • +1

Plenty of business people would find the 10GB/month roaming data invaluable. And if they're on the road a lot, their phone could be their primary source of internet access. Netflix isn't exactly 360p YouTube.

      • Business person torrents and watches 4k netflix while at work?

        • Probably while delayed on the runway for 2 hours

          • +1

@bobzor: Business people fly Jetstar? Need to spend less on phone and more on their tickets.

      • That is all fair enough but the greedy bastards will just keep raising the prices with time. Compared with international prizes the pricing here is simply insane.

  • +5

I know its a lot but $200 a month for unlimited 5G internet access, unlimited calls anywhere internationally. I bet the 5G speeds are better then my current internet speeds now which is costing at least $70 a month.

Probably won't get the plan, but interesting how the markets moved, I used to laugh at the thought of people going to Mobile internet instead of NBN in the future, but if prices go down for usage, who knows.

    edit—
Plan says intl for only 15 countries, but the critical information says all destinations, wonder which is right

    • -3

12gb per month apparently is considered fair use

    • Although might be faster in some cases, latency will never match, so doesn't mean much for gamers etc. Also using your phone as a hotspot for your house won't end well with high CPU processing and battery use - as well as excess heat.

    • Plan says intl for only 15 countries, but the critical information says all destinations, wonder which is right

I went into a Telstra store a while ago and asked if they sell these plans. They said they do and it's mostly to people who call their family overseas at length frequently but the country isn't on the normal 15 country list. It's definitely any country except Satellite, Aerospace and Maritime.

When did almost $4800 for a phone plan become a deal? wow!

  • +3

    Unlimited 5G Data… oh, really…
Hopefully the phone will last that long.

  • +1

Check oztowers.com.au and rfnsa.com.au if and when you're getting 5G (3500mhz), ISPs will have EME reports before deploying since they gotta submit a planned scope of works. Gold Coast should have 5G first for Telstra. Also probably check to make sure your location has a nearby tower with appropriate sectors. Just remember your speed will depend upon a lot of factors- don't expect 3Gbps or something like that here.
Regardless with carrier aggregation from the current 4G network you'll still get good speeds. If you want an all in one internet and phone plan this seems like a good deal.

    • Tower with 5G 3600 prop right beside the unit, good deal if just selling the phone and keep the sim as NBN is a few light years away in my area, ugggh.

  • +1

Very tempting to say the least if just getting it for the unlimited data for home, but one of those 5G supported modem routers cost upwards of US$799. May need to use 4G for a while… T_T

  • +1

No deal unless you return the phone in perfect condition.

    • Doesn't need to be perfect.

Can be returned with a few scratches and dings. But nothing too heavy.

      • It also looks like you can switch the plan to a 'Buy' plan for the same $199/unlimited price.

        Unless I'm missing something?

  • -7

Or get almost the same deal from Optus for $110 with a free tablet and the ability to share data. I don't see how this is a deal. It's almost as bad as the Telstra Oppo R15 Pro deal and the Optus $30 sim only deals yesterday.

I have a 200gb plan with Optus and then share the data with a $20 ($10 after discount) data plan so that my home broadband is almost free as I use a 4g hotspot plus a mesh router.

    • Only when 200gb is enough
I found some regional areas, my Kogan(Voda) is much better than Catch(Optus). Will go Boost and see how it goes

    • Telstra is not the same as Optus, at least for many people.

200GB is not the same as unlimited.

      • It can be, depending on what the provider decides is fair use. 'Unlimited' or better known as 'unknown limit' is always a risk vs a fixed limit plan. I've heard of people being capped at 40GB a month, some at 1TB. Depends on the congestion in your tower and how much of an impact your making I imagine.

        • Are there any verified reports of people being capped at 40GB per month?

There's not a single report that is even remotely close to that in this thread: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2741433

          • @vetopower: I've seen it posted in ozbargain before by users, but I dont have any references no.

It could be that fair use is a moving goalpost as competitor data plans get larger. regardless its still a risk that you'll have to accept, small or large.

But anyway, IF its 150GB or 200GB, that just means its comparable to a 200GB capped data plan which is cheaper is all I am implying.

            • +1

              @Kill Joy:

I've seen it posted in ozbargain before by users, but I dont have any references no.

Are you sure you aren't confusing it with their old Endless Data plan which was "unlimited" but shaped after 40GB?

              • @eug: possibly. But regardless, lets say the limit is 150GB for some people. the same point applies.

                • @Kill Joy: I get the impression you are making these figures up.

my average monthly bandwidth consumption was around 1TB/month.

I am an estatic Telstra customer today, and as a heavy household internet user this plan is perfect for my needs.

                  https://whrl.pl/Rfjgpr

i have done almost 700gb in a month no issues , always over 500gb per month !

                  https://whrl.pl/RfkvI7

Easily pull 800GB a month (with the odd OS & driver update, that's what pushes me over 1TB a month)

Feedback from Telstra (in various forms) have indicated that I'm not a significant downloader on the unlimited plan.

                  https://whrl.pl/RfkyI9

                  • @vetopower: Haha no i'm not making things up, I have nothing to gain? A 2 minute search of the forums shows the history people have had with 'fair use' mobile data plans. I'm at work so I cant spend time quoting people or finding exact examples, but heres one:

                    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/183960

At worst, my facts are outdated since thats from 2015. But i'll remind you the T&Cs are just as vague in 2019. I just raised the concern that in the past, fair use has been blurry to say the least, and until the T&Cs stipulate something less vague, nothing stops Telstra from issuing batches of bans once their network fills up with unlimited 'fair use' plans and they can't stem their loses due to congestion.

Take it as you will - obviously the risk is worth it to you based on that whirlpool post so there is no need to argue further.

                    • +1

                      @Kill Joy:

At worst, my facts are outdated since thats from 2015.

That's the key point - things are different now. After the ACCC cracked down on "unlimited" plans, telcos are a lot more cautious now when they advertise an unlimited plan.

                • @Kill Joy:

lets say the limit is 150GB for some people.

Where did that 150GB figure come from? What if the limit is 1.5TB for other people? :)

                  • @eug: Its all hypothetical. I never said you WILL get capped at 40/150/200/1500GB, I'm just saying that 'fair use' is vague contractually and you should treat it as so. This is not a difficult concept to grasp…

It's like saying just because you dont know anyone who has crashed into a light pole, that it cant happen. Accept the possibility and move on with your decision. I just wanted to raise the issue for people to make the decision with the correct information which is its possible to be banned or shaped for what the carrier deems as 'fair usage' which no one has a definition for.

                    • +1

                      @Kill Joy:

I'm just saying that 'fair use' is vague contractually and you should treat it as so.

Yes, that is fair to say, but quoting arbitrarily low figures with no evidence seems a little unfair.

Don't forget that this post is specifically about Telstra's current unlimited $199 plan - I think it is unfair to say "but 4 years ago, on a different plan (that probably cost ~$79), a different network, and a different technology (3G), and when average data use was much lower, people were cut off at 100GB - therefore you might get cut off at 200GB on this $199 plan on 4G/5G in 2019".

You mentioned that you had heard of people getting capped at 40GB, then mentioning 150GB and 200GB figures with no backing of any sort.
As I suggested previously, that 40GB figure in your mind might have come from Telstra's $69 Endless plan which shapes you after 40GB. That has nothing to do with a fair use policy or this unlimited data plan.

The ACCC last year warned the telcos that advertising those shaped plans as unlimited could be misleading, so they stopped. Telstra still advertises their $199 plan as unlimited though, so it's not the same as those "unlimited" plans.

It's like saying just because you dont know anyone who has crashed into a light pole, that it cant happen.

You're comparing this $199 plan to cheaper plans, plans on different networks, and plans from years ago. That is like saying your Ford Territory had a worn out brake hose which caused you to crash into a light pole, therefore all cars might have a worn out brake hose.

If there were lots of reports by people saying they were kicked off for downloading 200GB/month (and not for using the SIM in a modem), then it would absolutely be fair to mention the 200GB limit. But as it is now, I think mentioning a low limit like that isn't fair as plenty of people regularly download far more than that with no problems.

Nah! I'm happy with my $10 a month plan.

  • So I always figured the iPhone xs max 512 was the way to go, costs more than this phone, sell it upfront etc.

Edit: I know iPhone won't do 5G , but I'm just talking about getting the unlimited Sim for as cheap as possible, hence getting and selling the most expensive phone available.

  • +1

    200 per month!!!

  • Is it possible to use it with a 5G router for office use?

    • No. If you take the SIM out of the phone, the account will be blocked.

      • April fools?

      • -1

If you take the SIM out of the phone, the account will be blocked.

Better not travel to a country that isn't covered by the roaming plan then. You won't be able to put a local sim in. :)

      • People are putting the SIM cards into another phone and hooking the phone up to a router.

        • If it is a business and don't need static IP, $199 is not expensive if they have good 5G coverage.

  • +2

$199 Per Month ($4,776 minimum cost).
Thought this would be a great deal

    I stopped reading after that.

  • -3

This thing will explode before I get 5G

  • Could you put the SIM in a WiFi AP? (Eg. Nighthawk M2)

  • Wow. This phone plan is worth more than my car.

    • Pretty soon your house too :-)

  • I am thinking about selling my kidney to the highest bidder. Non alcoholic straight male. Secure the kidney now for the older version of you. Bidding starts @ $4500 aud. Winner needs to paypal 50% in advance.

  • I can't believe this deal has 21 up votes. A) This plan has been around forever and you're not getting any better value now than before and B) there are so many better value deals out there.

  • +1

This deal includes 10GB Roaming and the ability to pay $10 per 500MB over. Compare that to Optus and it’s literally thousands of dollars difference in Telstra’s favour.

It also includes StayConnected Advanced valued at $14 a month. It includes unlimited calls to all countries!

  • So for $200 a month I could run a hotspot for 30 neighbours and charge them $8/mo for unlimited data and speeds minimum equivalent to NBN 100MBPS?

    The NBN is so 2011.

  • +2

People are pricing this plan all wrong……

    The phone $1500
You home BB 24 months $1440
You normal mobile 24 months $1200

    The number seems very close.

the deal is not for everyone but for those who don't need fix BB at home. This is an excellent deal.

Oh the convenience/freedom of able to use whatever you want and wherever you want is priceless. I am on 150G of Optus data and no longer have a fix line connection. I really don't see myself going back to fix line connection.

    • Exactly. If only they offered this as a BYO phone plan (with a corresponding discount), I’d jump on this.

High speed internet wherever I am without worrying about data usage.

Plus generous international roaming, which is perfect for those of us who travel overseas on a regular basis.
