I'd get the refurb S9+ over p2xl at this price.

    • That's nice, would you like to elaborate?

I think he(or she) is referring to this deal
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/448264

Normally I would side with Pixel 2 XL (for stock experience and superior camera) but the recent One UI update is really good

That's for an S9 not an S9+, also I was asking them to elaborate on their choice.

          • +1

@magic8ballgag: Yes true! I would like to know the thinking behind their choice also

Unless you actually NEED the latest version of android as soon as it's released, and unless you somehow value slightly better photos from a PHONE but don't actually take photos like macro, or optical zoom - the s9 is better in every other way. The battery is better, speakers better, call quality is significantly better, more software features, better screen, more accessory support, better local support, trade in program for future phones, better user experience with less bugs and issues.

And it's not a google product, which is attractive of itself. google's tentacles might already be everywhere, but to go out your way to buy and support their products, and add to their bottom line….ewwww

        • Have you even had both phones to be able to compare the things you listed, or do you just have a biased opinion? As it seems like the latter.

Also, define more accessory support and better use experience with less bugs/issues, as in my opinion Google have done everything to make vanilla Android as simple as possible.

@magic8ballgag: I have both these phones right now. I am a Google fan, have had nexus since galaxy nexus. I have shunned galaxy phones for no real reason other than the thought of bloat and lag.

My work gave me an S9+ while I bought a pxl. I happen to be on my 7th RMA, about the 4th they sent me a new p2xl to replace my og xl. I never had any issues with phones prior to pixel btw.

If a nexus has bugs, you deal with it as you bought a developer phone at a good price. If a pixel has hardware and software bugs, it hits you harder as they are one of the most expensive android phones on the market.

Google is an advertisement and services company primarily. You can tell this by all their half assed projects that come and go along the way. Google are not focused on long term support of software, they are focused on the next big thing, and reward employees for new things.

The pixel gets the latest operating system first, it also gets the bugs associated with this first. Many bugs never get fixed, and many issues arise over and over.

If I go to a store, I cannot buy the USB C to 3.5mm jack for Google phone. I am limited in choices of cases, screen protectors, etc. I use my p2xl naked as the range of cases and protectors are no where near as good as Samsung galaxy. I know this now as I own an S9.

My p2xl requires reboots to stay fast, my S9 doesn't. My pixel has pixel specific features like now listening, which doesn't work. The s9 just works, has loads of customisations, and feels like Samsung actual sat down and thought "how will users use this phone", rather than just making an expensive phone with no real software advantage over any other phone.

Sorry for the rant. I'm a long time Googler who gave them many chances and lots of money.

Why would you need to? It's an included accessory with the device.

I'm not sure where you're looking, but JB Hi-Fi for example have a few, and eBay has the rest.

It really does sound like you've received a dud of a phone, and you're quite picky with them if you've been through that amount of RMAs.

rather than just making an expensive phone with no real software advantage over any other phone.

The Pixel wasn't designed to be feature packed or have a software advantage over other flagship phones, it was designed with simplicity in mind, which I understand may isn't as popular because the UI isn't as pretty and people like flashy things if they're spending that amount on a smartphone.

Because it breaks constantly. I have gone through 4.

Compare this to Samsung. It's a huge gap.

I have had random reboot of death = dead phone twice. Mic didn't work. Speakers rattled. Call drops after a few mins every time. Bluetooth stopped working entirely. Many of these are known and common issues with Pixels btw. Even showing up in the new P3. I think these are not me being picky - for a $1.5k phone. Again I am a fan of Google. I love nexus.

Yea I agree about simplicity, it's the most basic phone you can get, which is why I was so shocked going to a galaxy, seeing how much I've been missing out on, so many really useful features that enhance my phone use and make my life easier. Yea the UI really hasn't changed much at all over the years, at no point has google really thought about single handed use on big phones, it's one reason I'm loving the OneUI on galaxy - it feels so new, far better than anything new on Q beta I'm testing as an example.

As in it stops working randomly, or are you too rough with them?

Compare this to Samsung. It's a huge gap.

It sounds like you were always meant to have a Samsung smartphone, considering the amount of customization you wish to have.

Many of these are known and common issues with Pixels btw.

Why haven't I experienced any of these common issues then? Mind you I am a heavy user and would do a lot more with my Pixel than the average user.

While I agree the Galaxy's are a fantastic phone and will continue to push the boundaries of the smartphone industry, I really don't think the two can be compared as they are equally good/bad in different aspects.

                  • +1

@magic8ballgag: Ugh I tried to have a civilised discussion but you are clearly extremely biased. I take extremely good care of my devices, I haven't dropped a phone in over a decade. I don't have any scratches on them either.

They can be compared as they are phones, for roughly the same price. They only can't be compared if you are a developer.

I just like smartphone things, like I can connect to two Bluetooth devices from my galaxy, I can change the colours on the display, I have the ability to run dual apps with seperate accounts. I am a power user so value these features. Having features built in rather than having to download third party apps or even pay for them is really great too. The only reason you would buy pixel IMO, is if you wanted to test Google products, like the Google Camera etc.

                    • -1

@onlinepred: I never hinted that you don't or have, but I find it hard to believe that four adapters have just randomly failed (or that you've had seven separate RMAs on your Pixel), so you're either super unlucky or exaggerating a tad.

Yeah, I could think of a few other reasons.

@onlinepred: Bro, Samsung flagships (since the S7) are the way to go, plain and simple. Have had the S7 Edge, S9, and S10+ and all 3 without complaints, through heavy usage. An all round beast each time. I always recommend the "plus" model for the great battery.

I'll take Samsung OneUI any day, currently have S9 (Snapdragon, Pie) and Pixel 2 XL (Q)
      - OneUI full screen navigation bar totally better than stock Android in my opinion, familiar and good response, recent buttons on stock Pie sucks.
      - Quick access from Notification bar, while in Pixel i could just toggle on/off
      - Higher customizable (natively from Samsung - try Good Lock from Galaxy Store) than Pixel on stock.
      - Better screen for sure, 3.5mm jack and wireless charging. usb-c audio accessory on Pixel is horrible.
      - Universal Dark Mode (on Pixel in Q it just broken)
      Pixel if
      - Prefer camera experience (this part is hard, cause i achieve the similar result on S9 Snapdragon with Pixel camera, Night Sight, Best Shot is amazing, and even on Pixel, it not quite fast to run camera than Samsung)
      - Better software update (Samsung provides security updates quite okay, but not Android updates)
      - Better to handle than S9, glass back sucks
Can't decide so i have both lol

  • do u still get 2 years of unlimited photo back up when i purchase XL 2?

    • Yes, not sure if it's two years from date of purchase but it came up with some date in 2021 when I set up the phone.
