iPad 2018 32GB $29/Month for 24 Months with 13GB Data @ Optus

1080

24 month contract, minimum cost over 24 months is $696. $29 is for the 3GB plan, plus 10GB per month bonus data (bonus data is for each month, not just a once off). New and recontracting services only.

Similar to this Telstra deal from January. An extra 3GB data with this deal, but Optus obviously doesn’t have the coverage or speeds to match Telstra.

Edit: This deal really kills this Optus deal.

Edit 2: Telstra deal was fake news.

  • Good deal if you need data and iPad. You also get music streaming and Optus sport (though that wouldn’t include unlimited streaming)

  • +14

$5 more gets you the 128gb same plan, might be worth it for some

    • Yeah, for sure :)

    • I thought you mean $5 in total for a second there.

      $5 / month extra.

what do people use iPad for? it's been ages since the era of tablets started, and I had a few, but every time I had one I use them once or twice and sell because they start collecting dust and I am allergic to it.

only Kindle stuck with me for years, as this is the only portable alternative to a book that I find comfortable.

so what would I do on an iPad that I can't do on a 6.3 inch phone or my laptop? movies while I travel? I just borrow my son's, he's just like me and doesn't use his much.

    • +6

they are great for watching tv shows or movies on the bus/train.

Logging into work remotely when dont have a laptop available

      • +1

They're more portable when you need to do something simple. Better than lugging a laptop. iPad usually gets you better battery like than a Windows laptop.

But if it's for watching TV shows and Movies, a 4:3 screen is the last thing I would want to watch them on. Even 16:9 devices are leaving significant borders now due to Hollywood really like very wide screen resolutions like 2.35:1. It's so much worse on a 4:3 iPad.

That ultra restrictive iOS os makes it even worse. Apple has a refusal to support mkv, which means if you want it added to your itunes library it needs to convert. The alternative is to wifi it over in a separate app, but then it won't be visible to other apps because it's not in your shared library. Wifing 40GB of TV shows is super freaking slow and you can't create separate folders for each show. This is supposed to be for security reasons but eh.. Give me convenience any day.

On the train I would just use my phone.

        • +3

Totally your choice, but I like my iPad, Its the 3rd Gen and its still running great

I have VLC Player running on my iPad and I can copy movie files (MP4, MKV AVI etc) over via iTunes to the VLC App with no issues via USB. So not sure what your on about with that one

          • @asa79: Are your MKVs being transcoded?

YOu might not even notice if they are unless your video has subtitles or dual audio channels.

Any format that the (very limited) default video player can't handle is going to get transcoded into something it can.

            • @lostn: I havent had any issues with vlc playing any format i have thrown at it, you have to remember iPads are mostly gpu based

I gotta admit mine is 99% used for netflix in bed

      • +2

I use it for Netflix and Kayo sports! Unbeatable..

    • -1

I don't watch tv shows or modern movies, and generally have zero interest in popular culture. so, only media consumption? any other use cases? remote desktop is a good one, but I need that once in a blue moon, and it is doable from phone if I really need to.

      • Yeah mainly media consumption. Might be just me but I find it hard to “get work done” on the iPad. Basic replying to email is okay but then I may as well just use the phone.

        • same. iPad is still an expensive toy for me, it just looks wrong for anything serious, typing on that screen is a "screw it where's my laptop", and getting a dedicated keyboard is clumsy as hell. also even the biggest iPad is small for me. also even 14 inch laptop is small. I am old :D

          • @[Deactivated]: To be fair my iPad mini doesn't get much of a workout since I got my iPhone 6 (bigger screen).

Still - mine is mainly used for eBooks in bed.

I have wondered if I got a newer one (that was faster/snappier) if I'd use it more - mine is pretty slow (gen 1 mini) even with iOS 12.

      • +1

Popular apps like facebook, spotify, netflix, email, browser, instagram, etc. Some people play games.

Windows is definitely more versatile, but it won't be as snappy.

Maybe you can look into a Surface Go to still get the same laptop experience with compact form factor. But bear in mind that the same CPU that powers a tablet will not perform as well in Windows. It's a more resource demanding OS than Android and iOS. Which then also leads to reduced battery life also.

YOu can get a keyboard cover for the Surface which will add the functionality of a laptop while not adding much thickness because the cover is quite thin.

I have two Windows tablets, two Android-Windows dual boot tablets, several Android tablets, and several iPads. Among these the one I use the most is my TabPro S (Windows) and Tab S4 (Android). The iPad Pro is the snappiest and has excellent battery life and stand by. But because I hate the restrictive walled garden of iOS I only use it for very minor things when I don't have my other devices with me. For travel I always use my preferred duo (Windows and Android). If I'm going to watch movies, I use my Tab S4 because of its more suited aspect ratio and better media options than iPad. You have to fiddle to get your library onto iPad and no media player has been as robust as MX Player. This is largely because iOS doesn't allow the permissions. I like to use my S4 in Dex mode with a mouse. It's like a laptop-lite. But it's a lot more responsive.

If you want something cheap, fast and compact that can do some of the simpler things your laptop does, the iPad 2018 is quite ideal for that. As long as you have reasonable expectations and won't do any business productivity on it like spreadsheets or anything you would want to use a mouse for.

        • thanks a lot, that's a concise overview of the tablet territory. unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I have a habit of reducing overlaps, I will never have 2 tablets at the same time, or 2 cameras, or 2 laptops, if I buy one, I sell the other, keeps the house tidy :D and I will think ten times before buying a device that does something that another device already does.

15 inch laptop sounds like a lot to carry around, but the ability to do my job from any cafe without wincing is priceless, and I haven't come across an app that isn't a limited version of the corresponding website, so.. there's that I guess.

I dipped my toes a few times into Apple pond, and yuck! too many limitations, and yes agree with you here, bringing over my media library into Apple ecosystem is such a chore! screw it. MX player is indeed amazing! nothing compares to it. so yeah, wa have completed the full circle: I use my tablet for one purpose only: watching movies on a plane, which happens not too often to warrant buying a device, I just borrow my son's Lenovo P8 I bought for him on one of ozbargain deals :D case closed.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: You're someone I wish I could be. But I unfortunately have a lot of overlap.

Some devices do some things better than others and some thing worse. That's why I need multiple devices to juggle around and use whatever suits my current needs best. I have not found a one size fits all computer. They all have advantages and disadvantages.

            • @lostn: yes, and boy, I have been through a few dozens models of laptops and tablets, all sizes and operating systems, and still I keep coming back to a 15 inch format. probably it's perfect for me, but everyone is different.

      Kids.

Useless for most adults as a phone is more convenient.

I know an artist who uses one with a pen and get s lot of use out of it.

      • what do kids use it for? mine has zero interest in it :D ah yes the artistic kind as well. good point, screen input might work great for them! thank you

Play android games, watch youtube/Netflix/Stan/Prime etc. read magazines.

If you play games, a lot of them are much more enjoyable on a tablet. I mean you can play them all on your phone, but quite a few premium games are a lot better on a tablet.

Yes I also have a Shield so I can play on a TV with a controller, but a lot of games don't support Android TV (which I get, but am personally annoyed about!)

I think people have realized that tablets aren't replacing any of your current devices, just a preferred use case for what I am others have mentioned.

      • fair enough, gaming. yes I can see how gaming on a tablet can be fun! thank you. me, I am not a gamer person, and anyway for the games I do play occasionally, laptop is way more convenient.

    • +1

Web browsing (I am using an iPad Pro right now), email, signing/ annotating PDF documents and sending them back without printing them, signing off on time sheets, form completion in the field (this is fantastic for my work purposes: natural disaster assessments), meeting note taking and filing (use pencil and handwriting conversion app Nebo).
I do watch movies and tv shows on it, but not that often. I probably read novels more often on it.

Thing is, it is more portable than a laptop and I travel a lot, and if it had access to a remote file directory system built into the iOS, it would be a total laptop replacement for me. The ideal set up would be a desktop for power use and this iPad Pro. For me.
Currently when I travel I keep a work laptop in the bag if I need to access work files remotely. I hate using Citrix to do it on the iPad. Otherwise I just use the iPad.
At the moment my home desktop has died and I am using the iPad as my home device while I save for a new beast.

      • -3

well, who's the unique snowflake :D thank you for the detailed report. yes, I can see how certain types of work can be done much easier with a screen input. not my work though :D to me the other hurdle is the iPad just doesn't feel robust, I would rather get a latitude 72xx for the money, with a touch screen if I must, and feel not limited in any way, and much more reliable device. but that's me. thank you!

    • +1

They're used a lot in corporate offices for meeting minute taking, quick PDF markups, OneNote, viewing 3D model software, digital apps, E-mail on the go etc. Very very popular nowadays and you don't need to lug around your laptop anymore.

      • -2

not around our office, but maybe we are slightly backwards :) yes I can imagine that happening in some departments, thank you! but what would consumers do with the iPad they get on this deal? for work?

    • Netflix in bed how old are you damn

      • +1

People still watch videos? That is sooo last gen

      • -1

I don't even know what Netflix is :D I need to get accustomed to modern time wasting contraptions to be less embarrassed in casual conversations :D

        • How are you even managing to sign on here? Public library with kind volunteer teenagers to help you? You obviously have the internet literacy of a rock.

You're either pretending to be an idiot because you think it makes you look cool, or you are trolling, or, you are actually telling the truth about knowing nothing about the world. If this is the case, you should REALLY stop commenting on things you have zero idea about. Telling people you think iPads are silly, when you don't even know what a computer mouse is, is pretty stupid. I don't go to show jumping events and tell the horse riders that I have no use for a bridle so why on earth do they bother with them, do I? If you don't understand something, either stay out of it or ask questions that don't insert judgement when you have nothing to base any judgement on.

          • @Quantumcat: no, I just have no time or interest in popular culture, you haven't been following :) I have a job that requires a very high level of IT literacy, which is why I have little time for generic entertainment :) these facts are rather pedestrian compared to the miracle how you make so many wrong judgements about me from so little information provided :)

and I am not saying iPads are silly, you're putting words in my mouth here. I am curious about what people do with them as I cannot imagine a valid use case for myself despite numerous attempts.

            • @[Deactivated]: And yet if you really were IT savvy you would be exposed to advertisements and you would see their use in the media. I personally have never used Instagram yet somehow I know all the things you can do with it, what company owns it and what contraversial features have been added, and of course why people use it. Not using something is no reason why you wouldn't know what it is, unless you live in a cave. I also don't believe anything you say about your kid, because unless you keep them locked in your basement, they will hear about games and other things that kids like from other kids, and will ask for those things. You either don't have a kid, you're lying about what your kid does, you don't know what your kid likes because you spend no time with them or talk to them, or you keep your kid locked in a basement and don't let them have any friends.

              • @Quantumcat: calling me a liar? we're getting serious here :) perhaps we just had different upbringing, but that doesn't mean that I am lying, and I will prove this in court if I had to :) I don't see much advertisements as I don't watch tv, and have adblockers, and I don't have to know about every service that sells people what they can have for free, or actually don't need! haha

    • Media consumption as others stated.

Part of me wants to wall mount a tablet and use it as a smart home controller also, but haven’t gone down that path yet.

      • when I started to read your second sentence I imagined first "part of me wants to duct tape it to my hand" or "face", but that would be a silly joke :D yes, actually, smart home control would be a fitting purpose for that beautiful screen. thank you! :)

        • Look old fella, you can go real low tech, you can read your newspaper with a tablet, even in the form of the exact same layout as the paper edition. This can be saved for future reading, saves having to go out into the rain to pick it up, plus dog hasn’t chewed it, or the newsagent can’t deliver the wrong brand, You can do your crosswords, and email friends with the text of an article. Great also if you commute, as the paper can be downloaded in advance and read in tunnels or other bad reception areas.

          • @RockyRaccoon: I am not old, and I don't read newspapers :)

    • +1

I use iPad to watch movies, Netflix, internet, read ill-gotten books, and read magazines from public library. It's like a hub of portable entertainment already downloaded and ready to go. Oh, and I'm still trying to finish Plants v Zombies.

      • I finished PvZ on desktop in 2009 I think! jeez man! get a grip on it! :D hahahaha

    • Why all the downvotes for an opinion lol

      • I have no idea! :) it is so weird!

Thanks OP, good deal but Telstra deal much better. You can always chat with Telstra rep and ask for additional 5GB data and it comes with free peace of mind data so its a bonus

The Telstra deal cannot be obtained stand alone, it must be added to a current Telstra account, Optus doesn’t require this.

The Telstra deal already includes a +5GB bonus data, so I’m not sure if all reps would be willing or able to stack a further 5GB bonus on top of a 5GB bonus.

Optus deal would be useful for people already with Optus accounts, as the 13GB data can be pooled.

Telstra deal is only for the 32GB iPad, Optus offers the 128GB model for an additional $5 per month.

Optus deal includes Optus Sport for free. Also includes data free music streaming and National Geographic.

      Optus doesn’t charge ETC’s.

Telstra deal is only for the 32GB iPad, Optus offers the 128GB model for an additional $5 per month.

Sorry, incorrect again. There are 128 GB tablets available.

Your post above is a good deal OP, its just I am pointing out that there are similar/in fact slightly better deal available elsewhere. Cheers!

        • +1

No need to be sorry. Which Telstra deal are you talking about? The one that I linked in the description was for companion plans.

Yep, ok then. But as I as said, Optus deal has data pooling for people with other Optus accounts, more included data in the advertised plan, an additional $10 per month discount for Optus account holders with 2 or more eligible services (e.g. mobile service and this), Optus Sport, and no ETC’s. I’m not saying the Optus deal is better, I just disagree with you statement of the Telstra deal being “much better” deal in all cases.

          • @aja12:

Which Telstra deal are you talking about?

            This one sir

an additional $10 per month discount for Optus account holders with 2 or more eligible services

Are you sure about this? Like you have one yourself? I left Optus precisely for this reason a few months ago as $10 bundle discount was canned by them. Happy to be proven wrong if you can link for such discount on Optus website.

I just disagree with you statement of the Telstra deal being “much better” deal in all cases.

Nope, I didn't say that it is better in all cases but I think it is better in most cases.

      • Optus doesn’t charge ETC’s.

No, but you lose whatever credit you were getting for the device per month if you end early.

RRP is $669, Optus 'only' charge $14*24=$336 - so your $14/month repayments double if you end early.

As the 'minimum' cost for the plan is $696, you're pretty much better off not cancelling.

        • I’m completely aware of that, Teclos would have bankrupted themselves years ago if they allowed people to leave contract early with no penalty, and only pay out the subsidised handset repayment. But it’s a lot better than leaving early, paying out the full device cost minus subsidies PLUS ETC’s.

  • Optus has $10/month discount for subscribers with 1 data account + 1 normal account plan. Can I have this discount with 2 data accounts?

    Thanks.

    • +20

I think you accidentally posted this in ozbargain and not Optus live chat

      • +3

        Sherwin P:
we are not offering discount on Ipads.

        • I do got the discount on iPad plan(data only SIM) from Optus, yes 10 bucks off each month while mobile plan under same name.

          • @hgaoxhgaox: Keen to hear how others go. At $10 off, i'll add one

            • +1

@Matt P: last time I tried this with Optus and they said they no longer have such discount on multiple Optus service. I had mobile plan, home broadband and was keen on signing up for this iPad deal a few months ago but as a result of no $10 discount, changed mobile services to Boost and signed up to Telstra iPad plan for $24/month with 15GB peace of mind data.

              • @IMadeYouReadThis: 20 minutes of chat with a 1/2 robot 1/2 human later ….

                Archer,

I did check and see that as of now we do not have $10second service offer for this iPad 6th gen and if you place the order for this and if you are going with another new SIM plan which $40 SIM plan, I can get you 20% discount on that.

I do understand your concern, we had the offer and the offer was ended on 31/03/2019.

              • @IMadeYouReadThis: yes, you are right, $10 discount is no more applied for iPad or data only SIM plan.

  • Pretty crap when you realise Telstra's offer had up to 300GB when you consider the 1.5mbps throttling, where as that would cost an extra $3000 on optus :\

  • I just signed up for Telstra for their 128gb new iPad with Medium plan wit 10gb of data for $34/m for 24 months.

    • You can sign up to optus with the 128gb iPad for $34 with 13GB data and share your data with the account

      • Hmm, chose to go Telstra for 3gb less. I've got 80gb Optus so has Optus sport etc.

  • Really want a second sim for data sharing with optus. Tempted to hook this up and ebay the iPad sealed brand new the day I get it.

    • Any idea how much you can get the iPad for on eBay?

      • Not really. You wouldn't want to pay more than $400.

  • What are the best cases these days?

  • In my testing, in many places Optus 4G speeds well exceed Telstra’s. So I’m not sure that Telstra has ‘obviously’ better speed.

  • +3

This is surely a stupid question, but Optus site says "no cancellation fees, just pay out the price of tablet". The tablet is down for $14/month of the $29. Would that mean after the first month you could just cancel and pay out 23x$14?

    • Probably covered by this in the terms

If you cancel early, you will forfeit any device credit and will have to pay the remaining device repayments in full.

So the tablet price includes a device credit, which goes if you cancel the service. Then again this is just my interpretation.

However I like your thinking, many times those implementing deals just don’t think how it could be taken advantage of.

      • +2

Went to livechat to get an answer on cancellation costs. Got the below,

The actual fee for iPad $27 per month device charge, Optus is giving -$13 Device credit, So you'll be paying every month $14. If you need to cancel the at any point of time, you'll be paying Actual fee $27* remaining months left.

        • Thanks bgktmxg. Going by the shopping cart page, this is the situation with the 128GB model (I think):

The actual fee for 128GB iPad $33 per month device charge, Optus is giving $14 Device credit (monthly), So you'll be paying every month $19 (towards the iPad). If you need to cancel at any point of time, you'll be paying Actual fee $33 * remaining months left.

          But that's just my interpretation!

  • Is a tax invoice provided? Or is there a way to claim GST from TRS?

    • No. You're not paying for the device upfront so there's nothing to claim TRS on

  • +4

I went to Harvey Norman yesterday to take out a tablet plan and the guy told me to wait a week or two as there are mobile and tablet specials coming up.

    • +1

Is this a Cellular model iPad?

Seriously? How else you think you will get 13GB data?

    • 99.99% sure it is. It would seem strange to offer a WiFi only model but offer a data service.

    • They always will be when purchased via a plan from either Telstra or Optus.

  • Hi
    Is it locked on optus?

    • NO

    • Apple devices are always network unlocked. Infact most of the high end devices are network unlocked unless those grubby cheapy prepaid phones (nokia 3310s or alcatels).

  • -1

    no surface go plan

  • Does anyone know the ipad from optus plan is exactly same as apple store or has some optus logo on booting screen like their phone?

    • +2

No Optus logo or any preinstalled apps etc. Comes with an iPad as you'd get it in the Apple store and a sim separately.

      • thanks
