  • really not bad for a more reliable home assistant box.
super tempted, or should I just wait for an SD card to die on me first :P

  • +1

I used a celeron 2025 NUC for this (Hassio) up until a few months ago - much better than raspi, thinking about this one for librelec actually.

    • No CEC control is a deal breaker for me . I love the fact that the RPI can be controlled with the TV remote .
Intel state that the NUC has a HDMI controller but apparently it only works in the bios but not the OS .
This is a solution but it is an extra expense : https://www.pulse-eight.com/p/154/intel-nuc-hdmi-cec-adapter

      • There is not many that have CEC as standard, so where is a similar product that has CEC?

        • -1

          Don't know , maybe use Google ?

          • @troyww: Your the one saying its a deal breaker because it doesn't have one, so curious to what products you have found that are similar that do?

            • @asa79: A RPI which is what he was comparing it to .

      • I'll probably use an amazon fire TV bluetooth remote if I need to- was $10 on ebay a few years back. Otherwise I think you can get an Android TV compatible one for about $13.

Generally speaking though, I use logitech harmony and pair it as a PC keyboard so I can map all the kodi stuff I want.

        • Yatse is great phone app if you cant be bothered trying to find the remote . I assume it works on a PC as well .

Was wondering what the use case for this would be as probably underpowered for desktop use, HA makes sense.

I'm using a few ~$40 S905x libreelec boxes around the house, working well with media on NAS.

  • Says "perfect for basic 4K digital signage", does it mean it's good for watching 4K movies?

  • Would this be any good as a cheap Plex server?
Don't really need multiple streams, but some transcoding.
Edit: seems underpowered, and only USB 2.0. probably good for home assistant though.

      Peripheral Connectivity

      • 4x SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports (2x back panel ports and 2x front ports including one charging port)
      • 2x additional Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports via internal header
    • Anything can do plex server. This shouldnt be any issues

      • Raspberry pi 3B+ can't (I tried).
Currently running off my old MacBook (2011ish). And it struggles with transcoding h265 files. Fine with direct play.

      • Depends on the level of transcoding that's required

        • Most smart tvs and android tv boxes can do most of the work themselves so you dont need to have to have big processor at a central location anymore

    • What do you need for plex? Local storage or cloud? Are you direct playing everything? For cheap I have a setup on a $5 a month contabo VPS that is functional but I'd recommend better if you can stretch it.

  • I had an old Celeron NUC set up for retro games, was ok

    • That sounds like a good use for my NUC that I rarely use. Were you running Retropie?

  • Missing msata port tho

  • This would make a good little ubuntu box, if you wanted something with more grunt than a raspberry pi.

I've got one of these. It's not too bad as a general computer as it's a quad core processor. Pop an SSD in it and it runs pretty good. Though it did have a video stutter problem when I first set it up.

  • Anyone know if this will run Sophos UTM Firewall?

    • it only has 1 nic

      • Yeah I knew that, reading some of the Sophos forums, others have got it to work with USB network adaptors.

        • but then your limiting your internet to how ever good the usb network adaptors are

          • @asa79: That is true. There are a few gigabit adaptors on the market. I'm just not sure how the overall system would work.

I was just looking to replace a old Lenovo M58p computer that I currently have Sophos UTM running on. Something smaller, with less power usage.

    • You want something more like this https://www.amazon.com.au/QOTOM-Fanless-Q190G4N-Gigabit-Wind… $202.00 barebones
