  • the issue with these chinese one are they're manufactured according to China specs, with rated voltage 220v and 10A, it'll become an issue with high draw device involving heating water like dishwasher, kettle and washer when these draw their max current. I have several xiaomi one and found all of them trip out while heating up water

    • +1

what sort of load are you pulling in kWs, 10A rating should be good for 2.4kW resistive load

    • If you tripping these out, then you might have a faulty applicances and would trip out any branded power monitoring plug

    • +4

Australian Standards say that a standard GPO should not be rated more than 10A. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AS/NZS_3112 . An appliance that requires more than 10A should have a different plug that doesn't fit into a 10A socket.

    • If my memory is correct, most power plugs you could find in Bunnings are rated at 10A.

      • I think you might have missed the part where Igacb08 said '220v @ 10A'.
Australian devices can draw 10A at 240V.
Seems unlikely that 200W would make a difference, but it's possible.

        • I have the original xiaomi smart plugs, they are rated for 250v 10A 2500W.

        • If you could check the description of this plug it said voltage is 250V :)

          • @ntb: Yes, but we all know you can't trust what's written on the website.
Last time I ordered xiaomi smart switch, I got zigbee instead of wifi >:|

  • Why buy this, when for $20 you can buy an approved smart switch from Bunnings that also has USB charging port?

    • +1

Which smart switch are you talking about?
Are they WiFi or Zigbee? Do they monitor consumption, and is there an API available to access it via Home Assistant etc?

      • +4

Bunnings sell a $20 smart outlet under the Brilliant brand.

      • +1

WiFi. They can be flashed with the Tasmota firmware as well. I haven't had a chance to flash the Tasmota firmware yet. Should also work with ESP Easy, but there are only scripts and instructions for Tasmota flashing without opening the device.

        No consumption monitoring.

        USB outlet is not controlled.

If you mean Google Home Assistant, then I think so. I don't use it. I use Node-Red.

        • They not the same if they have no monitoring feature. So that's invalid neg

          • -1

@asa79: Most people don't want power monitoring. They just want a switch.

            • +1

@whats up skip: Most people will buy a smart switch but the ones that want power monitoring will pay more for one. Like the two tp link versions

        • -2

Once you open it you have technically done your own illegal electrical works. This would be classed the same as replacing a plug on a power lead

          • @asa79: I said you don't need to open it to flash Tasmota. There are ways of doing it without that.

      • As mentioned in a below comment, the Bunnings one is Wifi. But for someone wanting just a switch (no power monitoring) then these are definitely the best value. They are rebranded from the Tuya brand which has Home Assistant integration. https://www.home-assistant.io/components/tuya/
I have one of these in use with dumb fairy lights attached.

I also have two of the older Xiaomi zigbee plugs, and they were a little unreliable. Not to mention it always bugged me that they weren't Australian certified. Instead, I now run with two TP-Link power monitored plugs, on the dishwasher and washing machine. Never missed a beat, and also trackable in Home Assistant.

I would highly recommend that if someone wants power monitoring, then to spend a little more and get the TP-Link plugs. This is from personal experience from using both brands.

        • to get these working you only need the following in the configuration file?

          tuya:
          username: XXXXX
          password: XXXXX
          country_code: 61
          platform: smart_life

    • can someone post the bunnings product page.

I've seen it mentioned twice, but unable to find the product.

      Maybe a perth thing.

  • +3

I'm not sure if it's explicitly mentioned in the description, but the AC socket can be controlled independently from the USB ports. The USB ports are controlled together.

    • Hmm, that's pretty handy.

    • I think the usb are just attached before the smart controla

      • I own one of these, so I can tell you that what I said above is correct.

        • Are you sure?
I was under the impression that the xiaomi smart switch with single USB socket couldn't be controlled separately, but the model with double USB sockets you could switch USB remotely.

          • @damion: Yes, in the posted item with the dual USB ports you can remotely switch the USB. However both USB ports are switched together - they are not independent.

  • -5

Lol. $30 plus delivery for a fake Xiaomi plug that'll take weeks to arrive (if it ever actually does) when you can get something similar for $20 from bunnings?

    • Not sure why your comparing this is lacking the power monitoring feature which is the one of the main selling points.

Please post up a exact feature based product to compare

  • +2

    Looks cheaper at aliexpress. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Xiaomi-Mijia-Smart-Plug-Sock…

Looks genuine enough to me. This 'enhanced' version uses WiFi instead of zigbee also, which could open more doors for easier 3rd party home automation software, same as the YeeLights.

Also. My Mi Home app has an entry for Mijia Smart Plug Enhanced, so a legit product exists. Who really knows what is knock-off and what is not in China, if it works and doens't catch fire, then all good right :P

    • +1

Not using zigbee is a minus for me. Hopefully they bring out a zigbee version in the future!

    • There is two plugs one WiFi and zigbee. I have the normal zigbeee one. This looks to be based of the WiFi one

  • Do these ones clear the power point switch on a double GPO?

  • +3

I bought two of these, (enhanced "v2" plugs), but the issue I have is that I cannot add them in the Xiaomi app with Singapore as my server. As someone with the roborock vaccuum, without a fair bit of hacking, it's not possible to have both them and roborock connected on the same account.

So that means both can't connect to Google home since it only allows one account of each brand. Quite comm on problem with these going off the forums..

    • I dont think the original supported Singapore either? I have all mine on china server just easier

    • Google home can talk to Mi home china devices as my Google home allowed me to add both Singapore yeelight and China mi home

  • +4

Just a warning - Gearbest was recently hacked by a white hat hacker and hundreds of thousands of accounts accessed. Further information at the following site -https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/gearbest-hack/

    • I can't see any date on that article.
      How recent is 'recent' ?

      • We accessed these databases in March 2019, and discovered 1.5+ million records.

        Reasonably recent.

  • I know the Xiaomi are a bit smaller and have the 2 usb chargers; but they are upside down and the app last I checked wasn't fully English yet. I'd still pay $8 extra to get something locally sourced with the similar features…

    • What app you talking about? the Mi home is English maybe you changed the language

      • If you set up a Xiaomi smart switch in Mi Home, the settings and options are all in Chinese.

      • -1

Asa, the Mi home app is not used for the WIFI powersockets (v1 WIFI, v2 WIFI). Zigbee - different story; that's handled as a zigbee sub device for the gateway and is controlled through the mi home app. The WIFI versions aren't.

These have a companion app that is not the Mi Home app - the timer section is all in chinese, you can change the main language to english, but timer remains in chinese (last I used it ~2 months ago).

        • You use the Mi Home App to control any xiaomi product, whether its zigbee or wifi.

I have all my wifi xiaomi and zigbee aqara products in the Mi Home App. I use Yeelight app for the lightstrips and bulbs.

  • I'm still waiting on an order for these - 5 x AU smart plugs for $71.24:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1X-5X-10A-Wifi-Smart-Power-Socke…

They are EWeLink app compatible devices but no branding (assuming similar to the sonoff devices?) - still assuming they work it's a good price for Aus. Shipping is from Sydney..

    • +1

      Still lacking power monitoring unfortunately

    • Going by the delivery times for Australia i would say that is being shipped from overseas like China, and not in Sydney at all. I mean the shipping delivery time table says it takes 11-15 and 15-20 days for most orders to arrive for Australian customers. It's shipping from Sydney at all but from overseas. As i said it would be coming from China.

You do get some eBay sellers who falsely put the item location as being some where in Australia but in fact the goods are shipped from overseas. Also the fact that seller description states that is "Based in China" which well pretty much means that seller is in China. So yeah the goods are coming shipped from China. It's annoying how some sellers falsify item location.

That's why you're still waiting on it. You'll be expecting a parcel shipped from China.

      • Auspost shipping suggests by 27th - I only ordered last Thurdsay evening so it does seem to be from Aus, though the product is an unknown. I've not played with smart home devices but although not monitored as a basic switch they were the cheapest I found, including the overseas sites..

Monitoring would be nice, but maybe more important on devices which maybe aren't switched? i.e. if my api key / address for ifttt was leaked would I really want someone to turn off my freezer! ;)

Not sure what the cheapest monitoring only devices are…

  • Overall nice, but I wish they are ifttt supported thou. It took some time to open Android emulator and control it while the phone is not right next to me….

    • What is the issue you seeing in ifttt

You should be able to connect to Mi home from ifttt and control?

  • +2

    So we have:
    1. a knock off electrical product
    2. not certified/approved for use in Australia
    3. from a seller that has a questionable delivery/refund policy.

Thats a whole lotta NO's from me.

    • Turns out it's not a knock off

Personally I have had no issues from gearbest but maybe I been lucky

      • As it doesn't list a brand, I guess techincally it is not a knockoff. But no brand is listed, so you cannot send it back if it is not xiaomi, and Gearbest doesn't have to refund you.

And still not an approved device for use in Australia.

I have had a few good runs with Gearbest, but also a couple of bad ones. It was not the bad product that annoyed me, it was dealing with their customer service dept who tried to trick me into "withdrawing my paypal complaint before we can process a refund". Um, no. I avoid now.

        • Everyone knows that "None" of the Xiaomi products are approved in Australia, so why are you in this thread?

          • @asa79: Because not everyone knows that these are not designed for, or approved for use in Australia. Some people would rather pay more for a device that is legal to use on Australia.

I am happy for people to use Xiaomi products, but they should do so fully informed. As such, you should include in your description that these cannot be legally sold for use in Australia.

Looking at the fine print, you have listed a device not certified for use in Australia, that could be made by anyone and be of unknown quality. How you decide that is a bargain is beyond me, but as long as people are aware, that is then up to them to decide.

            • @skyva: Xiaomi products aren't new to ozbargain

  • +1

I got these, and they work perfectly.
4 for $79. I used two and gave two away as presents.
There are 2 piece and 1 piece options as well.
Aussie plug and power monitoring and Alexa compatibility.

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-smarterhome-smart-plug-wi…

    • I have the same question as @bamzero has above,
Do you get enough space to work with the other power point if this is plugged into one of points in a double GPO?

  • Extension cord is definitely not a bargain.

    • I know but i thought it was cool having the multi plug at the end, if only other companies made them

  • Xiaomi is a good oversea brand but not approved to be used in Australia.
