BUPA Health Insurance - up to 120,000 Velocity Points (Couple/Family) or 60,000 Velocity Points (Single) - New Customers Only

200

1st deal post, please edit if anything incorrect. :)

Looks like Bupa has increased the bonus Velocity Points given;
1. Couples / Families / Single Parents - Get up to 120,000 Velocity Points in 2 installments
2. Singles - Get up to 60,000 Velocity Points in 2 installments

But with a catch (they have become smarter);
1. You need to be paying by direct debit / payroll deduction
2. Points come in 2 installments - at month 3 and month 12 so you need to work out if the total costs outweigh the value of the points

Full T&CS here (note they specifically call out this deal does not work if you join through a price comparison site);
1 Offer available for Velocity members who are new to Bupa, join with a selected health insurance policy from 9 March 2019 to 30 June 2019, agree to pay premiums by direct debit or payroll deduction (if available), and provide their Velocity Member number on sign-up. Australian residents only. A selected health insurance policy is a single, couple or family, family plus, single parent, single parent plus Hospital only or combined Hospital and Extras product issued by Bupa (exclusions apply). Velocity Points will be issued in 2 instalments over a 12-month period, with the first instalment arriving in month 3 after the date you took out your Bupa cover and the second instalment arriving in month 12 after the date you took out your Bupa cover. Different Points earn rates apply to NT residents: up to 80,000 Points for families and couples or up to 40,000 Points for singles. Offer not available with any other Bupa promotional join offer and is not available if you join through a price comparison site (including Compare The Market and Health Insurance Comparison). Bupa health insurance policy product names are subject to change, as a result of industry reforms which have effect from 1 April 2019, however the allocation of Velocity Points will not be affected during this promotion.

I really, really detest companies that do this. Loyal customers of 10 years get jack. Time to leave them I guess.

    • Their Royal customers (commission) are coming after them (hopefully)

Are you really loyal or just too lazy to switch or you think Bupa has the better cover that's why you stayed? Just because you stayed for x years does not make you loyal. I stayed with x company for 25 years and i dont get benefits that doesnt mean im loyal, its just that they are the cheapest.

      • +1

        Loyal.

I check pricing every year, and I willingly pay more to Bupa because I had believed they were better, cared more, larger network, better service. All the reasons anyone becomes loyal to a brand. I could of moved to cheaper options each year.

Loyalty needs to be rewarded. In most businesses it used to be. But insurance, telco etc have all changed to focus purely on acquisition. So previously loyal customers like me, decide to move now.

        • It really doesn't pay to be loyal especially when it comes to Australia health insurance. If there was one company that does loyalty program like Qantas FF, it would be game changing.

        • better, cared more, larger network, better service

As long as you aren't in aged care,

    • Done, thanks sir!

    1. You need to be paying by direct debit / payroll deduction
    2. Points come in 2 installments - at month 3 and month 12 so you need to work out if the total costs outweigh the value of the points

    Hahaha no thanx.

My experience with them wasn't that great especially 'customer service'. I cancelled my policy. OMG that process was hard they tried every trick to entice me back.

What is 60,000 points worth? I have issues understand this. Where could I fly with these points? Uk?

    • In general, 100 FF points = $1, so valued at $600 (but since it's virgin the actual value may be closer to $400-500)

      • Depends how you value them; Virgin has far lower "taxes", and has useful routes for me, so for me they have higher value than Qantas. Qantas has a better network on which you can use the points, but most of them charge eyewateringly high taxes - so much so that you can often literally book a low cost carrier flight for less than the "taxes" without using any points at all…

    • Enough for a return economy flight Sydney to Hong Kong.

      • And the tax is enough for a discount ticket.

        • Really? Yet so see a $160 return flight to Hong Kong. You should have posted it as that would be quite a bargain.

  • Hmm, could I cancel my current Bupa policy then rejoin as a "new customer"?

    • Was thinking the same thing here

      • No. You will get hit with tax and gotta serve the wait period. Best is to churn to another provider and back.

    • Ive called before. They advise that they could create a new customer # etc however will need to serve the waiting period. I told them to bugger off as that didnt make any sense, considering I didnt leave and they have all details!!!

Looking through it - this CUA deal actually seems like a better deal than the original post. Though one point of care is that CUA Health classifies Ambulance under Extras not Hospital cover unlike many other providers.^^

That said, I am more concerned by BUPA's Ambulance policy which unlike many other providers (Medibank, AHM, nib, etc.) is not unlimited. So if you're unfortunate to need an ambulance twice in a year BUPA couldn't give a damn about you.^

^ Not the case for some of the higher level policies - but chances are you're not buying one of those.
^^ Be especially careful as a closer reading suggests therefore a 50% extra policy will only cover 50% of your ambulance.

Members who terminate their policy or downgrade to a hospital only or extras only cover within 60 days of commencing your policy cover will not be eligible for an eGift Card. In addition, if you make any other changes to your policy, then the gross annual premium for the purpose of determining your eGift Card eligibility will be the applicable premium 60 days from when your policy cover commences.

So if you're feeling cheap, get the minimum eligible cover, then upgrade just before the 60 days deadline…

Difficult to find out exactly what the gift card is for though.

Reading the full T&Cs, this is only a deal if your gross annual premium is high enough.

Tier Gross Annual Premium Gift Card
      Tier 1 Premiums up to $1250 $0
      Tier 2 Between $1251 – 1670 $150
      Tier 3 Between $1671 - $2200 $200
      Tier 4 Between $2201 – $2500 $250
      Tier 5 Between $2501 - $3500 $300
      Tier 6 Between $3501 - 4170 $400
      Tier 7 Above $4,170 $500

Taking the minimum gross annual premium for each tier, you're essentially getting 1.38 - 1.44 month free (I did the calculation in Excel).

If bupa ‘insurance’ is anything like their nursing homes I think u can safely give them a wide berth

  • Sucks that you can't prepay for the year to lock in a better rate

    • +3

You are never locking in a better rate, just delaying a price rise. So the only time you actually make a net saving is when you cancel the policy or die.

  • Can I sign up for 3 months, get half the points and cancel the plan?

    • Probably yes, although they did not specify if the 2 installments are of equal amount.

  • Does anyone know if you were previously a bupa customer can you still get this deal?

  • note they specifically call out this deal does not work if you join through a price comparison site.

So does that work with cashback?

  • Do you think this applies to corporate plans?

    • No - this didn't show up in my corporate portal so had to use the public site.
Signed up for the couples growing family (61k bonus points) which was similar to my existing premiums.

  • +2

Note that it's "up to" 60,000/120,000 points. To get that you need ultimate cover = $$$. For lower end plans not really worth the hassle the switch.

    Full T&C's https://www.bupa.com.au/staticfiles/BupaP3/Health%20insuranc…

    • Yeah if you're on a more basic cover expect 10k-20k.

  • I can't even find the singles plan which grants 60,000.

    • Found ultimate.. nvm

  • I think the 9saver deal is much more accessible than this. 6 weeks free, gift card, 2 and 6 month waiting periods waived

  • I'm after extras only - Sad to see none of these promotions (Bupa or other insurers) apply to extras only :(
