Phones Now Cost OVER $2k – Has Anyone Taken out Mobile Phone Insurance?

I'm looking at moving from an iPhone 8 Plus to an iPhone XS because I need more space and battery life is starting to suck.

At $2k, I don't trust myself not to lose a massive chunk of change by leaving my phone somewhere, getting mugged, or just breaking it.

Those that have taken out phone insurance, how have you gone trying to make a claim? Who did you use?

No, why would I pay for insurance for a phone?

I don't pay $2K for a phone. I use hand-me-downs or get phones 2-3 gens old. I upgraded from an iPhone 4 to 6s about a year ago for $400 or so.

If I did have an expensive phone, I would probably make sure my home and contents covered it.

I think I can add it as an option on my Contents cover but… haven't felt a need to. To be fair, I also don't have a $2k phone - my current one was $1.4k when new - screen protector, tank-y case, and I'm almost always on it anyway so I haven't left it behind anywhere, yet. It's still in pretty much mint condition, if I give it a wipe down.

Honestly, if there's a realistic probability of you losing it or getting mugged for it, it may not be a good idea to buy a $2k phone in the first place.

Still rocking my 5yo phone with mSD slot & replaceable battery pack.
    It has headphone jack too.

Apart from credit card offer, you can bundle it with home contents insurance.

I don't think the expandable storage and headphone jack thing is a dig at just Apple anymore, basically no flagship phones have (both) those features anymore.

        • I put two and two together, seeing as the basis of this thread was regarding an iPhone being replaced. But fair point.

"hardware replaced on the spot", what like apple charging you $1000 to fix your screen when the problem is a bad cable. Don't think its fair to call any of apple's OS's new because its been almost exactly the same since 2012. Why would you ever need to turn off google apps and services? My data may not be as secure, but that's the risk you get with a much more open platform, and you really only need to worry about it if you're an idiot and can't use your phone.

Why y'all apple users keep defending a company that's so anti-consumer for over double the price, it's almost like you enjoy it

          Well said!

        • $1000 to fix your phone

Lmao, I love it. Pull an amount straight out of your behind and pretend like it's the typical experience for a replacement device.

I'm hardly an Apple user - I have one iPhone (my first iPhone), and a MacBook Pro at home which I don't even use a lot (or froth about) because I work on computers all day and barely get on a computer at home.

We have 5 or 600 iPhones in the company I work. Of the handful I've had to take to an Apple Genius bar for a HW fault, zero have been denied a replacement, and were replaced on the spot. Walked in with a buggered phone, walked out with a brand new device 30 minutes later.

You are performing mental gymnastics if you think Apple's hardware replacement policy is anything less than industry leading.

I love how the only thing you can refute, you refute with bullsh1t hyperbole that is outside the bounds of reality. Says a lot about all the down votes and subsequent replies with zero arguments.

        Triggered Apple fanboi alert !!!

Why y'all Apple H8rs gotta get a dig at Apple at every chance? It's laughable.

Simple, Apple is undemocratic. I like democracy.

It's covered by my home content insurance.

Check H&C insurance, most cover personal items below $2000 to $3000 or so. You'd also want to make sure that the items are covered outside of the home too.

    • Cost me $60 extra on H&C to insure $2k iPhone with $100 excess. Bargain

  • If anyone spends ~$2k on a personal item, they should consider the insurance options available.
PS: I don't have a phone anywhere near that value.

  • If a iPhone 8 Plus is 5.5-inch, is going to a 5.8-inch display on a iPhone XS really worthwhile?

Unless you mean the iPhone XS Max with a 6.5” display?

What about getting a battery for your iPhone 8 Plus or having Apple check out why your battery sucks…

  • Phone insurance isn't cheap and don't forget the excess if you make a claim.

I didn't really consider it worth while and if I needed to do then I would just buy a cheap handset until my contract was up.(but I don't own a $2k phone)

  • This might sound stupid for some. But if you get separate phone insurance the phone is gonna endup costing well over 2k with the added insurance. I don't know you, but I can think of better things to do with that kind of money.

    • Also why do people buy iPhone XS? I don't see much of different between XS and X

  • lol

  • I use an old Nokia 6. It does the job. It doesn't bother me if I drop/break it. I would never pay more than $400 for a phone.

  • My husband does, he can be a little clumsy sometimes. I've always used a good case and never had more than a cracked screen, which would cost more than it's worth to fix anyway so I don't bother, it's quite expensive.

  • I cracked my brand new iPhone XS max ($2049) 4 days after getting it. I purchased on Coles credit card so it had insurance for 6 months which covered the repair without even paying an excess.

Now that the 6 months is running out I've added it to my home and contents insurance with Allianz, $2000 coverage with $100 excess cost me an extra $60 for the year. Includes 120 days of overseas insurance so I'll be able to travel with only credit card insurance knowing my most stealable and lossable object is covered without paying for a premium travel insurance plan.

I've looked at standalone smart phone insurance policies and smart phone insurance through your telco and the plans are terrible in comparrison. RACV was $318 per year with a $200 excess for comparable cover. Telstra charges $15 per month plus $190 excess plus a "device non return fee" if you don't return the old/damaged device.

With outrageous prices like these it's amazing Credit Cards offer free coverage (28 Dgerees has 1 year) and that Allianz was as cheap as it was…

Best insurance is to avoid that shiny new phone that really does nothing more useful than your 2 year old flagship phone.

If its still working perfectly why not keep your 2 year old phone for much longer?

Alternatively if your phone is kaput then buy a used late model flagship phone such as Samsung S6 or S7 or iphone 6/6s which can be purchased from $150 to $250
    or …..
buy one of the ever better Huawei phones which can be purchased new from $100 to $200.

If you must get one of those ever more expensive new phones then YES. get insurance and ensure it includes screen breakage
