Lenovo is currently having a 48 Hours Sale as part of its Mother's Day promotion (we all know nothing beats a sexy black ThinkPad as Mother's Day gift). Coupon code is 48HRSALE, and

  • 10% off all ThinkPads and ThinkPad Mother’s day bundles
  • 15% off all Thinkpads and ThinkPad Mother’s day bundles when your configuration is $1000 or more
  • 30% off all Thinkpads and ThinkPad Mother’s day bundles when your configuration is $2000 or more

A $2000 ThinkPad T-Series might come down to $1400, although it might still be a bit too expensive comparing to buying from overseas (if you take the trouble). However it's a good value on the lower end of ThinkPad range. For example the newly released ThinkPad Edge E520.

  • Intel Core i5-2410M Processor (2.30GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz FSB)
  • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
  • 15.6" W HD (1366x768) Anti-Glare, Midnight Black
  • Intel HD Graphics
  • 4 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory
  • UltraNav without Fingerprint Reader
  • 720p HD Camera
  • 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
  • DVD Recordable
  • 6 Cell 2.2Ah Li-Ion Battery

  • 1 Year Depot/Express Warranty
  • $602.10

Good price for a solid built Sandy Bridge i5 I reckon.

The Edge deal is excellent, especially now that integrated graphics is much less sucky. But they lack USB 3.0 despite being a brand new model.

Looks like it's the same with their latest L-series models as well. Seems like Lenovo couldn't source enough USB 3.0 chips, wasn't happy with the supplier's asking price, or skimped on updating the designs.

    • Yeah I always thought that Edge is just L series in a fancy shell and also costs less. Pretty much the same guts inside I heard.

  • good spot mate re USB 3.0

still this a great deal, was trying to suss out what the Edge series was and it is meant to be the "in between" model between the Ideapads and Thinkpads (hence lower price)

Here is a critical Gizmodo review on one of the earlier Edge models (featuring one of the older Core 2 Duo procs)

    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2010/01/thinkpad-edge-review-a-mur…

Also the model numbers are a little misleading. There are E220 and E420 versions of the Edge series in other countries i.e. Asia Pacific, US. In order of price E220 > E420 > E520. Main differences are that the E520 while having extras like a numpad, bigger screens lack the portablity and lightness of the more expensive models

    • Those are E220s and E420s, and E420 without the 's' is closer to E520 and an upgrade to Edge 14 that is still selling in Australia. I am hoping to buy a E420 within the next three weeks and am hoping it would be out in Australia then.

      • sorry you are right. so just to clarify, the addition of the 's' indicates the models are of lighter weight and longer battery life.. am I missing anything else? thanks!

      • Looks like Lenovo ThinkPad E420 was just released in Australia. Getting my credit card ready this week :)

Here is the latest promo code THINKHOTDEAL which I might post later today.

        • 8% off all ThinkPads
        • 15% off all ThinkPads when you spend $1000 or more
        • 20% off all ThinkPads when you spend $1200 or more
        • 30% off all ThinkPads when you spend $2000 or more

        Ends Friday May 13

2.2Ah?? junk battery, Acer provides 6Ah. you call that thinkpad? I call that thinkagain, not all thinkpad are good since levnovo took over

    • what sort of battery life do you think it can get? the normal 3 or so hours?

      • I also wonder how is the battery life on this laptop and is the $40 upgrade option for a 9cell battery worth getting?
(like will this make the laptop heavier or bigger battery but :P)

        • -4

the 9 cell upgrade option doesn't state its capacity.
9 cell will definitely bigger and heavier. Hope it's something like 8Ah not 4.4Ah.
Better call them to confirm before choose this.

      • -4

Acer's 6cell is 6Ah, provides up to 8 hours with core i7/5 processor(actually 6 hours of heavy web surfing.) see here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44386

We used to have something like 2.5 hours for a 4.4Ah 6 cell battery for the old generation
processor (Core 2), now with 2nd generation 32nm core i7/i5, you should be able to get more than 4 hours from the same 4.4Ah 6 cell battery.
To lower the cost, lenovo happily provide you a 6 cell battery but it's a junk 2.2Ah one, to give you the same amount of 2.5 hours as old time and prevent you from enjoying the advanced tech (4 hours out of the 4.4Ah 6 cell battery.)

So, I say it's a junk battery and think again before you buy a so called 'Thinkpad'.
For this battery reason, I gave this a negative vote.

The ridiculous price of Lenovo Au is a joke compare to the US site.
But this is the way to get some warranty here if you are not buying
a laptop with international warranty cover from US.
I suggested avoid Lenovo and buy some other brand, show your attitude
      on their price.

    • +1

I suspect there is something wrong with their listing there. 2.2Ah would normally be 3 cells. Their 9 cell battery is 8.4Ah.

With previous generation Edge 15, a 6 cell would last around 3.5-4 hours of usage.

      • +1

"Nine-cell, rechargeable system battery, 94Wh", hopefully that will make some people happy!

  • +6

If you buy one I would recommend changing the operating system from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit - It doesn't cost any extra.

There's a catch here. For all low end laptops like ThinkPad Edge. You will be forced to buy 3 years warranty upgrade. The discount is on the item price only. You will then add the price of 3 years warranty which is $214.50. This is the one I tried to see what the final price. Notice: if an item price is $1000, you will have more discount than a item price $950. So try to customise to get the best value/price you want.

    ThinkPad E520
Intel Core i7-2620M Processor (2.70GHz, 4MB L3,1333MHz FSB) with Intel Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.4GHz1

    15.6" W HD (1366x768) Anti-Glare, Midnight Black
    AMD Mobility Radeon 1GB
    8 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)8
    UltraNav without Fingerprint Reader
    720p HD Camera
    500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm4
    DVD Recordable5
    9 Cell Li-Ion Battery60
    Broadcom Bluetooth 3.0 with antenna
    ThinkPad 2x2 a/b/g/n10
    No Wireless WAN support65
    1 Year Depot/Express Warranty

Price: AU$1,009.50 (after 15% discount) it will be $857.65

Plus Upgrade to 3 years express repair: AU$214.50

    Total price: AU$1,072.57

if an item price is $990, you will end up with a total of $1105.5. So get more for less.

    • How did u get this price for the confit that u listed above? I jz entered the same specs and I got a price 100+ bucks more than u listed at 1009? Mine came up to 1123 before discounts

    • I was wrong when saying they forced buyer to get the 3 years warranty. It was this model that include 3 years warranty.
      http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auweb/Leno…

      • Yes it is a pretty good deal especially with 3 year warranty included. $160 to get extra 4GB RAM is rip-off though — better to just get 4GB on 1 DIMM, and get another 4GB stick elsewhere for $50.

        • You got to be carefuly with these RAM as they are some times a pain to find because of their unique config!

  • +1

compare the price to the US lenovo, you will never think this is a bargain! Come on, Lenovo AU, drop your price to match the us!!!!

    • Yes, for T/W/X series.

A similar Edge E520 i5-2410m on US site is $849 USD..

      • +1

I would rather spend US$800 on a X220! besides, even you pay the tax, it is still a lot cheaper.

    • here goes comparing US vs AU again.

  • what is the difference between the two RAM configuration below:
    -4 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
    -4 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM) [AU$0.00]

I assume it means the 1st option uses two 2GB RAMS/sticks and the other uses one 4GB RAM/sticks, but will there be any performance difference between the two options?
Cause if there's no big difference then the 2nd option will be better as it free's up a RAM slot for future upgrade

    • +1

No difference except that you have a slot free to expand memory.

    • +1

There's no big difference. The first config, with 2 sticks of RAM will give you dual channel mode, but against single channel memory there's at most a 5% difference in performance.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual-channel_architecture#Perfo…

    • +3

get the single chip so you can chuck in another 4 gb later. trust me.

      • Isn't the memory dual channel? I.e. you need one stick in both slots? Correct me if I'm wrong.

edit: nevermind, just read the post above.

  • I didn't find the thinkpad e520 with i5 cup sale for 602 dollar.
    Anyone found it?

    • Did you see the coupon code on the top? 48HRSALE

      • Thanks mate i got it

    • pick E520, then 15.6'' ThinkPad E520 and the $669.00 model. $602 after the discount code.
      pretty good price.

  • -8

    Boring

    • +4

Your name is louis in reverse. Your argument is invalid.

Awesome price. One of the rare low-cost 2nd-gen i-core systems with a 34mm expresscard slot. Means can add a DIY ViDock to make it a gaming box: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-car…

    • Very very interesting link, thanks!

  • I almost got a heart attack when I saw the L520 with a Gen2 Coire i7 for $699! Although I soon noticed 'up to' in the description.

  • Looks good. Do the Edge ones come with HDMI out? They're pretty vague on the full specs.

    • They do have HDMI out for sure.

Took me a lot of digging around before figuring out that there are full PDF specs on the page you select between 13, 14 & 15" Edges - they're at the bottom of that page.

      Here's a direct link to the E420 & E520 PDF specs:
      http://shopap.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/WW/ap/au/en/products/pdf…

      • Thanks for that, although I don't like how those specs say the 2410M doesn't have turbo boost. Everything else I've read says it does. Hmmmm.

  • do any of these come with blu-ray?

    • I too was looking for that option but did not see it anywhere:(

  • How does the money back work in this deal? When I go to click lenovo from Moneybackco it takes me directly to T series? Does it mean that I cannot get cash back for any other laptops or it is just a click to get you to lenovo through their portal? Help will be appreciated!

    • No you can get moneybackco on any Lenovo purchases via MoneyBackCo. Just browse to other products…

  • Just saw the deal and bought a E520 with a fingerprint reader and added bluetooth. Changed the operating system to Windows 7 64 bit and memory to 1 Dimm. Also purchased through buckscoop.com.au who give an extra 3.15% cashback. Thanks for posting Scotty, this is a great deal

  • Thanks @scotty my sister was after a laptop and got her to order one of these, good value.

As well as selecting 64bit windows I saw that it was only $20 to upgrade from a 5400rpm hdd to a 7200rpm one, we went with that.

  • Is this machine worth the $200 more than the MLN's one?
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44456

    • This deal is expired now — only lasts 48 hours.
That ASUS is an entry level laptop, okay for general use and web browsing.

This Lenovo is packing a higher end processor that also has fairly good graphics performance (for an integrated chip anyway) and is also likely more power efficient.
