HP ProLiant Microserver AMD-N36L 1GB250GB NO-CD $168.16 + ship

1111

UPDATE 2 MegaBuy are all out, congrats to everyone who scored this awesome deal. The server is great (mine arrived today). Commiserations to those who paid by BPay or bank transfer and may miss out.
UPDATE dessytek are all out, if you paid by BPay or other non-instant payment type you better cancel your order and buy from MegaBuy for a few dollars more…
http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-microserver-amd-n36l-1gb250gb35…
Even megabuy are saying that you must use CC or other instant payment, otehrwise you will miss out as these things are flying out the door.
dessytek had 59 on Friday and nearly 300 on Saturday, so its a case of snooze you loose.

I ordered from desssytek 2pm Friday using PayPal, and my server arrived 11am Monday - NSW to VIC via StarTrack Express.

I just bought one of these today and it has already shipped ($16 shipping to VIC). Luckily I fond this site still says it has 50+ in stock becasues the boys over at OCAU have been snapping them up left right and centre last few days.

The prices are fluctuating all over the place right now so please check the usual places before committing.

These were circa $500 since they were released, but just recently the price has been slashed.

It is an ideal setup for a NAS if you put something like openfiler on it, or WHS if you want to pay for an OS. Basically this is killer bang for buck if you were going to go down the DIY NAS route. The AMD laptop CPU in this is faster than the even the newer dual core atoms. It is targeted at small business with a 1 year onsite warranty and the spec is really great for the price…

HP Part number: 633724-011
Processor: AMD Athlon II Model NEO N36L (2 core, 1.30 GHz, 1MB L2, 15W) supports 64Bit and VT
Number of processors: 1
Standard memory :1 GB
Memory slots: 2 DIMM slots
Memory: PC3-10600E UDIMMs DDR3 (can use ECC or non-ECC RAM 2x4GB max)
Expansion slots: 1 half-height, half-length PCIe x16 Gen 2; 1 half-height, half-length PCIe x1 Gen 2
Network controller: (1) 1GbE NC107i 1 Port
Standard storage connection: Non-hot plug 3.5-inch SATA
Storage controller: Integrated 4 port SATA RAID
Power supply type: 150 Watt

Some linkage…

It comes with a 4 bay mini-SAS backplane (1 bay populated by the 250GB bundled disk, woo hoo) but there is an additional external 5.25" SATA bay and an internal USB port so you have other options to run an OS off of and keep the 4 bay backplane for storage etc.

        • It's not like I can cancel the direct deposit - it was put through straight after I ordered.

It's annoying how that money sits in limbo "processing" for a day earning interest for the bank before appearing in the other person's account.

  • Does anyone know if the esata is a multiplexer or only handles a single external drive?

Would be great if its a multiplexer to handle extra storage.

    • I've seen 1 report that it is NOT port multiplier capable, which kinda sux.

  • Dessytek are pretty bad at responding to emails - sent one on saturday and still no reply :( Just need to find out if my order will be fulfilled because I paid with BPay on friday - if it wont be I wish they'd let me know so I could buy at megabuy. (My order is still sitting as "Processing")

    • They replied to me. No chance.
They? I mean he - Ian. I suppose all these one-man online stores use the Royal We.
Have you ever seen a web-shop with a "contact me" link, instead of "contact us"? :-)

I'll bet this morning he wished he did have a staff!

Deal updated to include MB link and a deal from MB for drives…
    http://www.megabuy.com.au/seagate-2x-2tb-green-barracuda-har…

    • Typo in URL for MB link, well, sort of. You need a space after it.

      • Ta, fixed.

    • I looked at those Seagate drives as well. I was interested by their performance claims and the SATA 3 interface.

But, I did a bit of research. Try googling 'ST2000DL003 firmware issues'.

Western Digital have SATA 3 drives as well now, but they seem to be priced well over $100 (circa $120).

In the end, went with the WDEARS drives. I know they had issues in the past, but I purchased one recently and it's humming along fine, so I presume the issues have been sorted. At around $85 they seem like good value.

      • It makes you wonder why WD doesn't change the model code of the EARS since they got such a bad rep (and rightly so).

      • Hey Atlas, what RPM have ur WD drives got? is it okay to give me the exact model number pls?

        • +1

My current one in my system is the WDC WD20EARS-00J2GB0 5400rpm drive - 4 x 500gb platter.

I haven't received the 4 that I ordered, but I presume they are the better 667gb platter versions.

    • By the way, shipping costs will increase as you add items to the cart. When i added my hard drives, it added another $15 or so for shipping to Melb. Including some RAM, I ended up with $50 shipping.

      • Ok ta, I've removed that link from the deal, it was only a few dollars saving anyway on those drives.

  • Got my "Order Shipped" email from dessytek yesterday. Hopefully will be here tomorrow :)
Should replace my NAS + HTPC nicely.

Though I think I'm getting addicted to OzBargain, I've already checked the site 2 - 3 times today and bought more stuff (that I didn't really need) :P

  • Megabuy comment on their product page [http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-microserver-amd-n36l-1gb250gb35-sata-no-cd-1yr-p255124.html]:

"STILL IN STOCK!! (4:50 PM AEST)
WE RECCOMEND ORDERING WITH A CREDIT CARD - AS BANK TRANSFERS TAKE 24 HOURS TO PROCESS"

  • Got my HDDs and RAM at Scoptec.com.au

$95 (using code HITOCAU) per Hitachi 2TB Deskstar 5K3000, SATAIII, 32MB Cache, CoolSpin
    http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/40759

    $115 for Corsair 8GB Kit (2x 4GB), PC-10600 (1333MHz) DDR3
    http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/39251

    Very happy! :)

    • be careful with that RAM I've heard there isn't enough room for heat spreaders. Peering into mine I'd say there is 2mm clearance on the stock module. Also, why you didn't go for ECC ram?

    • Those Hitachi drives look nice! Although I think this box only supports SATA 2?

      • Should still be fine using SATA3 drives

  • Does 'order shipped' from DessyTek actually mean shipped?

    • It means the order has been processed/allocated and passed to HP/warehouse, so you should be GTG.

      • +2

Well, I think I might have ordered too many:

        Dessytek: 3
        Megabuy : 3

        How many do I need?
        me: 1
how many does my wife think I need: 0

        • +1

lol Thats the definition of OzBargain right there.

        • You just need to make her think it was her decision to get them. ;)
Looks like you will have a server for each room in the house, even the out-house

Paint one pink and fill it full of chick flicks and girly TV shows…. Maybe even give it a name. :P

        • Heya brutas… If you end up with a spare I will buy off you .. Ping me .. [email protected]

        • Hey, if you are willing to get rid of one, I'm more than happy to get it one from you with a bit of extra $$$..=) whim me at [email protected]. Cheers man..

Took the plunge and bought one of these but I don't even know why.

Before it comes up, those getting this box as a HTPC should read http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/ProLiant-Servers-Netservers/No-… for info on it not having true S3 suspend to RAM standby.

    • Business servers should run 24x7 so there is no need to be suspending

      • Agreed. But from comments a lot of peeps are intending to use this as a HTPC chassis

  • bummer, looks like Megabuy are out too. They've taken it off their website, cant find anywhere else that has stock for under $200. Devastated and annoyed that after coming home to see that my BPay order hasn't been allocated :( Anyone looking to sell one of their spares they bought?

    • Well shit.. I got in just in time - had been trying to make a decision all weekend, finally grabbed one a couple hours ago.

  • I got a couple from megabuy never know when you might need a server or two to replace an old power hungry one. Two servers will hold more drives and use half the power of my old Athlon x2 server.

  • SIGH… looks like bpay has screwed me :(

    • Same here mate.

But I am lucky, my boss brought two. So I might buy the second one of him! :)

  • Pays off to have a prepaid rechargeable credit card linked to paypal. :-) Benefits of no interest & can be used online.

  • In case you guys missed out, they have them here for $171.25 with $9.75 shipping to most major cities. And they have 290 in stock.

    http://olpo.com.au/90614-HP-633724-011-HP-MICROSERVER-AMD-N3…

    • Don't count on it, it says…

      Stock Status: In Stock: 290
      Updated on: Saturday, 07-May-2011

thats what dessytek was saying on Saturday too. I'm guessing they just get stock updates direct from HP warehouse, and these turkeys haven't updated yet. Worth a shot I s'pose.

    • Now says "Stock Status: Discontinue"

I reckon if you haven't had shipping notification by now you're out of luck

      • Yep, just got the email advising that they don't have any stock… lol, damn… well there is some forced savings I guess!

  • Am I safe with this?

The status of your Megabuy Pty Ltd Order # has been changed to Processed.
Your order has been sent to the warehouse for dispatching and delivery.

    • Yep, thats what mine said late Friday, and it arrived this morning, with no further updates in between ie. no tracking number etc.

      • That could be a problem. Which courier? Will they leave it if noone in?

        • StarTrack Express NSW to VIC, I doubt they'll leave it.

  • Still no bloody response from Dessytek and loks like I've missed out on the Megabuy deal - pretty pissed at Dessytek right now. Fab deal though, congrats all those who got it!

  • I hope mine is not get cancelled or i will be so pissed :( just bought 3x2TB WD and 2x4GB DDR3 this morning and realize im one of the BPAY victim :(:(:(

    • What is your Dessytek order status currently? Mine is stuck on "processing"

      • my current status is Payment Received - Awaiting Processing, but Ian emailed me and ask for my bank details for full refund. NOT HAPPY! waste my $358 for 3x2TB WD and 8GB kingston DDR3 :(

        • No reason why you can't refund the rest.. Even if you bought it from a dodge place like MSY they will take it back, with a 'restocking fee', bastards!

    • I'm a BPAY victim too. This is what I found on the website.

"Please note that we will not be able to allocate any BPAY or Direct Deposit order not currently marked as Processed. Refunds will be processed as soon as possible. Please forward your account name, number and BSB by email to [email protected] if we need to refund your order.".

    • Another annoyed bpay buyer here. Dessytek's communications is pretty poor - doesn't really give me confidence to deal with them again in the future. I had to email them today to find out what was going on, which was when i found out "stock could not be allocated".

      • Did they actually reply to you the same day? I'm still waiting for a response to my email from Saturday and another one on Monday!

        • Yup at least they/he replied within a few hours. Sigh.

    • There may be some hope for us BPayers yet. I just received ANOTHER "Order processed" email from Dessytek but this time my order status is not "Processing" anymore and instead is "Order shipped"!!!

Edit: I paid around 5pm on Friday and I think my BPay payment went through on Saturday

      • Mine was just changed from Awaiting Payment to Payment Received - Awaiting Processing too. fingers crossed but doubtful.

  • Just printed off Tax Invoice from Dessy Tek, & it's dated TODAY.
(We ordered on a previous day.) The web site info, for this order said "Awaiting Payment." (We'd paid already, via BPay.)

Is there a phone number for Dessy, to confirm that we're actually getting a box (or when to expect refund, if not)?

    Oy!

I know it's late to ask… but does BPay have any process, to help get refunds back, eg, if vendor fails to deliver…? :-/

    • I think the Tax invoice is dated whatever date you download it on because I ordered on the 6th and looked at the invoice on the 7th and it had the 7th on it and looked at it then and it had 10th.

I can't find a phone number anywhere - kinda dodgey. Surprisingly my BPay order says "Processing" I had a payment received email on saturday after paying on friday and was very surprised but I still don't think I'll be getting the server :(

      • There Is a phone number on the invoice.

At lest I thought there was.

  • Has anyone recieved theirs after ordering on the weekend?

    Itching to get it going!

  • Does anyone know GPU if I want this for HTPC. A few came up but not sure which one to get: GF210, GT210, GT220?

Also do i really need to go with active cooling, am worried about the noise. I read that XFX are meant to be good with noise.

    • A GF210 will be fast enough for 1080p, whilst still being low powered enough to not generate too much heat. That would be my recommendation anyway.

  • Its saying re-stock notification now on dessytek. That's a bit more promising than "discontinued".

I'm guessing HP Australia warehouses are empty now, bur they must be expecting more.

    • Ever the optimist! Don't hold your breath. Read on:

Please note that we will not be able to allocate any BPAY or Direct Deposit order not currently marked as Processed.
Refunds will be processed as soon as possible. Please forward your account name, number …

      No offer to backorder.
Is Ian not willing/able to reverse the B-pay payments? He should only need account details for DD.

I'm long overdue for this. My old home server is a low-power single-fan Pentium-III box.
And some people were worried if the Microserver had enough power for recording and streaming HDTV :-)

      • +1

Oh well, best keep an eye on brodens ebay account then.

These servers have only been out since September. That's nothing for a server. But I guess stocks have been seriously depleted by this bargain pricing, and the £100 cashback in the UK.

  • I received shipping notification from Megabuy today, ordered at 3am on 9/5.

    • Received the server today, but the hard disks and RAM are no where to be seen. Looks like they must be coming from different dispatchers.

  • My status at dessytek says "Payment Received - Awaiting Processing". I don't know when they will refund my money.

  • damm, Bpay did not go through! they gonna cancel my order even I ordered on on last friday!
I deadly want this microserver!!! can anyone sell me, plz?

    • Your'll probably find a flood off them on ebay soon.

  • Got "Payment Received" on the tracking form from my BPAY payment but nothing on the refund…

  • so this thing only supports sata 2? I am going to buy 2x 2TB for the time being, which brand do you guys recommend?

    • Yeh the specs on the HP website say sata2. I went with wd green drives, by t there plenty of options.

    • This isn't to say that SATA3 won't work, I haven't tried this my self yet but being a new product I can't see any problem using SATA3 drives in this box, and if you get 64MB cache, even better performance then SATA2 drives

  • Ordered mine very late friday/very early saturday with paypal and mine was delivered today at ~2 pm. Not too much room inside, but managed to get gt520 in and vista installed

  • ok, im one of the bpay victim and my ordered has been cancelled, its sux,

anyone know about this product? "ICYBOX IB-NAS5220-B Gigabit dual disc RAID NAS" how is this compare with hp microserver?

    thanks for any advise

    • the icybox's are toys compared to the HP.
The HP is a server-grade box. The icybox is a marketing exercise.
Its crap performance wise, very very slow, about usb2 speed, so if you're happy with a NAS that runs like an external hdd then its ok. Otherwise steer clear.

      • thanks a lot smackus for the head up

  • I ordered 2 but unfortunately have fallen victim to the bpay/bank deposit delay…

If anyone has a spare they are willing to be rid of i'd be willing to pay a little bit extra… pm me here or send a message to … [email protected] … thanks

  • Sigh missed out, I have 3 IP cams installed and was going to use this to record too. Was going to install Windows 7 & install H264 webcam for 24 hour surveillance and motion detection recording.

Please please tell me if this deal returns.

    • +1

For security apps, why not use a cheap laptop/netbook instead? Still low power, but you get a UPS built in. External usb2 2.5" drives would do the job easily.

      • I was thinking that but I wasnt sure how much power a laptop would use, I have an old Compaq lying around I might give a try… would it use less power than this HP Micro server?
        Also whats an UPS…

        • UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply/Source.

Battery backup, in simple terms. Goes between the power plug and your equipment, provides power filter and protection (usually) as well as an in-line battery that will be charged whilst power is available and used to power equipment when power is out.

A laptop will use less power than a desktop, assuming it's got a laptop CPU in it. If the laptop stays cool during use then it's usually not using much power. As to how much it would use in comparison to this server, unsure. It would be close though I'd imagine.

Ah.. I missed out the deal.. sigh..
Anyone which has spare and willing to sell it, please contact me and I'm more than happy to get it from you (with a bit of extra, of course)..=D Whim me at [email protected]

  • Ordered from Dessytekat about 6pm on Friday (using PayPal/Credit Card), says the order has been shipped but I haven't received a tracking number. Hoping it arrives soon

    • Yeh, it happened with me too. Ordered on Friday, paid by Paypal, got email Order has been shipped but until today (Tuesday), no package. I live in WA.

  • +1

Just called Megabuy, they say they are recieving all the units today and will send them out today/tomorrow.

  • +1

I must admit, the power consumption is a tad higher than I expected. My linkstation uses 14W idle, and this uses 36W, using the same meter etc. So the values are at least relative if not accurate.

So given that the HP isn't twice as fast as the linkstation, I'm finding it hard to justify keeping it. I have no other use for it other than as a nas.

I would like to try running it off a picoPSU, but they are an added cost that might not work out. It should, because the HP PSU is a bit hungry in that it uses 17W in standby.

So in summary, I don't want to spend any more on this right now, allthough the potential is definitely there for this to own my linkstation given the PSU option. But if someone wants to make an offer, pickup only in 3149 I'm all ears right now.

    • -1

      Please move to 4006.

    • Ill buy it if you still want to sell [email protected]

    • We are very close I am in 3151. I can do pickup today! [email protected]

      • +1

I still need to try a few more NAS OSes first. And I am leaning heavily toward trying a picoPSU now, I have realised that I can use it on another PC I have if it doesn't work out well on the HP.

        So there are 2 things:

        1. If I can't find an OS that gives me twice the speed of my LS-QVL, the HP server is out (its a big ask given that the LS-QVL is already pretty quick).

        2. If I find a suitable OS, then I will buy a picoPSU to try, but if it doesn't lower the idle power consumption into the 20's, the HP server is out.

If either case is true, I will definitely be offloading this server here, preferably to someone who missed out (I really admire those peoples extreme tightness, in trying to save $4 in the face of a deal that was already being OzBargained as mentioned in the post).

        • What protocol are you trying to use? What speed do you currently get from the buffalo? I would guess that a win server os would be fastest for NTFS, or freenas 7 for good ole SMB.

Wouldn't picoPSU require a powerful 12v adapter? Wouldn't that eat up most of the power savings? Perhaps you might find more advanced options for drive sleeping might lower the idle power more significantly - generally server boxes spin 24/7.

Unfortunately, paypal'ers were also delayed till after all of those with credit cards, and most of us students don't have credit cards. I paid via dd from a westpac bank, which transfers instantly to other westpac accounts, (even on a saturday) thinking that would be faster than the 3 days paypal takes to clear bank transfers. $4 wasn't the issue here at all.

  • Just got the following Email.

  • Just received mine from Dessytek! Ordered on Saturday so pretty happy with the processing and delivery time.

First impression: Very solid build quality. I was expecting it to be a bit flimsy for the price but it's built like a normal HP or Dell server.

  • If anyone wants to sell theres in WA please whim me

  • Just received my Microserver from dessytek. Paid via BPay 5pm on Friday and received today in Adelaide at 11:30am. Any other BPayers who actually got theirs? I'm VERY happy with my bank right now for putting the BPay payment through so fast.
