Alot of the smart ones don't meet the new compliant yet which is strange
Is that just the junction box or something else?
If it’s just the junction box which Nest recommends is used anyway then it’s something like a $5-$10 cost.

Ah not too bad if thats all we need.
Unsure but I think that’s likely it in which case the electrician should be able to sort it out anyway. I had 3 installed recently and our electrician didn’t note any special requirements for the install.
Thanks OP - was waiting for this….for some time ;-)
I was looking at the Nest cameras recently. As well as smoke the Nest Protect also measure co2.
Can the wired ones be integrated into an alarm relay, and operate off the alarm wiring?
They smart wireless with api to passed to mobile and heaps of local and online apps
Shame, since it does an audible test every month with no control over the screeching makes it a deal breaker for me. Otherwise it would of been perfect.
I haven't heard this screeching? and have 5 of these installed
Do you have it scheduled for when you’re out? Set them up recently and if the testings enabled (can’t remember if testing can be disabled), the default time was around 11am mid week once a month.
From all documentation i've read they do an audible self test which you cant stop or disable. So yours much be screeching when you are not home, unless you did find a way to turn all 5 off?
I hear the self tests but aren't that loud. The alarms sounds still work when missus set it off with the airfyer
@asa79: Ok thanks, so the self tests aren't loud the same as when it detects smoke? I have a cockatoo that gets freaked with loud noises like a smoke detector, and i cant risk him crashing off the perch breaking a wing etc every month with a something like a smoke detector test.
@LowRange: na the self tests are about the volumne of it talking when your setting it up. Like it will beep but not like alerting loud

Tho personality i think it sounds slightly louder on my computer speakers then the nest speakers
How to change the Sound Check schedule and notifications, or disable them
When you first add a Protect to your account in the Nest app, you’ll be asked if you want to enable Sound Check. When you enable it, Sound Check will default to running between 11am and 4pm, but you can select a different time.
After setup is done, you can always change Sound Check settings with the Nest app. Here’s how:
1. Select any Nest Protect on the Nest app home screen.
Note: Changing the Sound Check settings for one Nest Protect will change them for all Protects in your home.
2. Tap the Settings icon in the top right corner of the screen. Then choose Sound Check from the list.
3. Set your preferred time for Sound Check to run at the bottom of the screen.
If you don’t want Sound Check to run at all, switch off Allow monthly Sound Check.
You can also switch Notification to Off if you don’t want to get a message before a Sound Check test.
Any changes you make in the Sound Check menu will apply to all the Nest Protects in your home.
Fantastic thanks, if it can be turned off them im sold. Their site contradicts itself though, i read here https://nest.com/support/article/What-is-Self-Monitoring down the bottom
Can I turn off Self Test?
*Self Test helps ensure that your Nest Protect is working to keep you safe, and gives you essential information when you need it, so it can't be disabled. *
Maybe they added the option to disable it in a later app update and forgot to update the page.
Wonder how many mics this has…
mics for what?
It's a Google product. ;)
So yes, v2 got at least one mic.
I know that’s a joke but fwiw it does have a mic for use with its scheduled testing processes. The mic is used to diagnose that the speaker is working.
You can always wrap it in tinfoil
Any idea if the wired ones are compliant yet? Remember reading you had to get some extra box for the joining wiring.
