Australians urged to give up the bottle
New research reveals that three quarters of Australians are still loading their trolleys with products wrapped in plastic.
Australians discard 356 million plastic bottles from bathrooms each year.
Ethique has prevented over three million bottles from ending up in landfill and is encouraging Australians to give up the bottle.
Reduce, reuse and recycle is the mantra for modern living. However, twenty thousand plastic bottles are purchased every second across the globe1 and Australians will discard 356 million plastic bottles from bathrooms each year3.
Australians continue to ignore the impact of plastics to our environment, with only 11% of plastic being recycled2. Forecasts for the environment are startling and by the year 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish4.
Despite supermarkets removing single use plastic bags, new research carried out by zero-waste leader, Ethique reveals that three quarters (76%) of Australians are still loading their trolleys with products wrapped in plastic. Whilst one in three (32%) admit that they are still throwing away too much waste.
Eco lifestyle Author and Speaker, Erin Rhoads, has been sharing her own journey since 2013 on how she has reduced plastic waste in pursuit of a plastic-free and zero-waste lifestyle.
"The research findings are alarming and unfortunately only the beginning of what I feel will be more to come in the future. It's scary to think that each bit of plastic ever made since the 1950's still exists today."
"To help Australians move away from plastic is going to require brands like Ethique to provide alternatives to our everyday items in the places we most likely purchase from, especially given the research found one in five have lost faith in the recycling system," Erin said.
Zero-waste products have zero-impact, whereas recycling requires collection, sorting and then processing from carbon-fuelled machines.
Erin said, "Recycling is a band aid solution and while we are recycling more, we are still consuming at a high rate. We are reliant on fossil fuels to create plastics that are used once, and if we are lucky, get recycled a couple of times before the material will eventually end up in landfill. Recycling plastic is simply delaying it from landfill."
Since starting their mission to eradicate the world of plastic waste six years ago, Ethique has prevented three million plastic bottles from ending up in landfill, with a range of solid beauty bars that replace traditional liquid products packaged in plastic bottles.
Ethique Founder, Brianne West, said it was her desire to reduce the impact of the beauty industry on the environment that prompted her to start Ethique.
"All Ethique's beauty products use biodegradable ingredients and compostable packaging, which leave no trace or bottles, jars, lids or pump dispensers to throw away. We also only use naturally-derived ingredients to recreate our beauty products," Brianne said.
Ethique's biodegradable beauty bars also last two to five times longer than bottled beauty products.
With intentions to save a further six million plastic bottles from being made and discarded this year, Ethique is encouraging Australians to give up the bottle.
Erin's top tips to living more sustainably:
Learn to pause and think before buying anything.
Ask if the product is too over-packaged, could you find an eco-friendlier alternative.
Choose fruit and vegetables without the plastic wrap and Styrofoam trays.
Invest in a reusable water bottle.
Sit in to drink your coffee and take those ten minutes to relax.
Rethink how you bring new stuff into your life, try borrowing and sharing with friends, family and those in your community.
