Unlimited Internet Content On your HDTV
High-definition television sets (HDTVs) are becoming a common sight in the home, yet the amount of High Definition (HD) content available for these televisions is often limited to expensive Blu-ray™ discs and satellite services. Consumers who want to take their HDTV experience to the next level are turning to Boxee.

The Boxee Box allows you to view a wealth of free, high-quality HD content on your HDTV through your home Internet connection. Access content fromYouTube™, MTV™, Shoutcast™, and thousands of other on-demand Internet media sources.

Multimedia + Social Networking = Awesome

Boxee is the first media center to integrate with social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, allowing you to recommend movies, TV shows, and songs to your friends, and also see which shows they are watching. Boxee’s open system means that new content is constantly being added everyday. All of your latest Netflix™1 movies, CNN™ news feeds, and Pandora™ song recommendations are available as soon as you turn on your Boxee Box.

Give your media collection a new life
If you have your own collection of downloaded multimedia content, Boxee will automatically sort and present it in media library complete with cover artwork, optional subtitles, and synopses. Just connect an external hard drive or flash storage drive via USB, or share media files from your computer over your home network. Move your HD media from your monitor to your living room and enjoy watching your movies in Full HD 1080p resolution.

  • Nice price, not the cheapest though (I don't think)

  • I'm very tempted to bite the bullet and get this as I need something for the bedroom to stream movies from the computer & also watch NBA League Pass (flash video)…

But I've heard the flash performance is a bit crappy… anyone had any experience with this or can recommend another device to perform the above functions?

    • I've tested a couple of units @ work and never noticed any issues with Flash, however, I only sampled a couple of regular Youtube clips and some of the included programs.

I can however vouch for its 1080p performance - it played pretty much every format and bitrate I had available.

The price is definitely good for what it is. Some people have reported issues with the fan being noisy, not sure if that is still an issue, as there has been a hardware revision.

    • Have had one since launch (November), and haven't had any issues with Flash.

  • Your ad mentions Netflix, Pandora and MTV. I take it you're guaranteeing that these services all work here in Oz?

    • The poster doesn't assume anything, he has just copied and pasted the info from the retailers site.

I don't know about these services, but I do know Hulu needs a US IP to work.

A friend of mine has played around with VNC's and so forth but says the max speed he can get is roughly 2-3 Mbit.

I don't know if this is enough to to stream HD material.

      • Nuts. I misread the "1" next to the poster's name as "Rep".

I'd fix it but the comment won't let me edit it. Apologies to the OP, trentq.

      • What ne heeds is his own server in USA. then you can get higher speeds with a US IP.

      • By VNC I guess you mean VPN.
Netflix an Hulu need a US IP and a US Postal Address to create an account

    • From what i understand it does, but it would all depend on your internet connection speed whether video/audio would be smooth(although i have heard 2mbps is sufficient). Once we get the NBN and unlimited bandwidth i expect these type of services to flourish

    • NO, they wont work. Those services are for US ONLY!

      • there is a way……… a dodge way, but its still a way

      • VNC can be used to pretend you're american, so far as the internet is concerned.

Not recommended to pretend the same with real life.

        • +1

Are you people sure you're using the right term? VNC is a remote viewer, that requires a computer to connect to… So unless someone has setup a server in the US, with VNC running on it, you can't do much.

Maybe you're confusing it with VPN? That sounds like a much more realistic option, as a VPN tunnel doesn't require anything special.

        • u can purchase a vpn from as little as $10

        • I copy/pasta'd. Whoops.

        • Or you can get a whole server for $10 (or less even) with a 100mbit link.

          100mbit just for you <3

        • Yeah they mean VPN - get a US IP from here: http://www.strongvpn.com/ This is what I use and it works great. If you want to get yourself a Netflix account you need to make up a USA postal address (go to google maps and search for "pizza san jose" or something) and pay for it with an American Express card. AU Visa/MC/Paypal won't work.

        • You mean you would trust a site which claims the speed is "Unrestricted"?

  • this is great, its expensive but its good to see Australians finally embracing the digital revolution, although we are still behind America. i guess we can expect to see prices go down as the average Australian gets educated about this sort of tech.

    • Forget educated Australians, prices should go down because our dollar is worth more. The US list price is $US229.99 which is $209.96 in our money.

Amazon currently have it available for $US184.95.

Good item. Pitty about the damn ugly look & shape.

  • One of the best HD streamers on the market today - The fan is a little noisy - but better than the Popcorn hour . The interface is pretty good as well. The IMBD video /poster feature is great.

  • I got myself one a month ago to go with the new Panasonic HD plasma.
Works wonderfully with all codecs, wireless out of the box, cool look and great little remote.
Only problem I found was in the file sharing with Windows being tricky to set up.
Highly recommend with all your shows there to watch with cover art looking like a video store with no effort.

  • I ordered one from Amazon last week $195 delivered

  • I didn't think that Amazon US would deliver to Oz??

  • Got one! as soon as it gets here I'm going to try the one week trial at http://www.unblock-us.com/ and see if it works for netflix on the BB and then go for gold! Very happy for the OP posting this as it means I can finally dump my Noontec. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks guys, ordered it and got it within 2 days in Sydney! Will see how this works on the network and may consider another one and a multi-room setup.
