So, a badge snob. Just swap label…sorted.

Im more of a reliability snob.. if it works why change it..

        • +1

For better reliability and higher speed.

WD Red has slightly higher failure rates and slower speeds.

Seagate Ironwolf's have slightly lower failure rates, higher speeds but slightly more heat and more noise.

If noise and heat isn't an issue the Seagate Ironwolf's are the better option.

I haven't had specific issues with Seagate since Fukushima when they had the 2/3TBs mass fail batch tbh.

I've had a WD red, an enterprise grade Toshiba die before but I've also got an 11 year old SCSI WD running still so it's all luck.

      • Im running ironwolfs and toshibas atm. Seagates are easily the most unreliable in my experience (followed by low end wd). Its hard to shake a bad rep but they did it to themselves. One of my ironwolfs is starting to look a bit fishy from synology nas reports but i do feel they have improved in recent years.

      … that's what she said hihihi…

  • 10TB deal posted yesterday was much better, $250AUD for 10TB Barricuda Pro 7200rpm, which retails for $519. Camelcamel shows its been on sale at $195 a few times past couple of months.

    • I mean this is a NAS drive with warranty, don't need to shuck as well.

  • This or the WD Red for NAS?

    • +1

People who don't know about HDDs or RAID buy WD Reds, people who do go elsewhere.
Take what you want from it.
Reds are 5400 rpm drives with a special firmware for hardware RAID controllers, NOT for software RAID on NASes, therefore just an over priced slow disk…

      • Thanks for the info. I have another question if you don't mind. I have a 4 bay NAS that currently has 2 WD Greens in them. Is it worth buying 2 iron wolf drives to fill up the other 2 slots or should I stick with the same WD greens?

      • I'm running 6 WD Reds in my DS1815+ and have them running under Synology's Hybrid RAID configuration. These have been running rock solid for 25+ months.
My NAS runs my media server (which I share with 4-5 family/friends) and acts as the storage point for 10 security cameras, 5 of which are recording 24/7. I also have 3 Macs which use this as a Time Machine backup server. The 5400rpm speed of the drives have zero impact on me being able to saturate a 100mbit ethernet link.
For most typical home use cases, a 5400rpm drive in a NAS setup is fine.

Dammit missed, needed another one for my NAS. Left 2 bays empty to fill later when needed or priced better.
They are great drives, so much faster than the dam WD Reds everyone is obsessed with and don't need for the NASes.

    • Yeah these drives have amazing read speeds. Initial burst is SSD range. Only problem is they take a little longer to spool up and can be a bit noisy with random clicking while idle and when in use. I've heard from others a lot of these drives have that issue but nothing wrong just the way it's built. I have no bad sectors or anything like that. Had a pair of these for over 2 years. No problems so far.
