To those looking to get an external hard drive and had missed out on the 10TB offer this morning, I found this lurking in the listings. This is the lesser cousin, but if you just need a backup storage drive, this is cheaper per GB than any other external hard drive available locally

That's not true. I shucked one and got a standard 8TB Barracuda (ST8000DM004) about 4 months ago. A number of others in Amazon also claim this too.
The big difference is these are garbage drives compared to the 10tb ones which is what makes the 10TB such a good deal.
These will be SMR drives while the 10TB ones are Barracuda Pros.
These are still fine for storage but the 10TB @ $250 is an unbelievable bargain.
It's a gamble whether you get the SMR or standard Green Barracuda. As I wrote above, I got a Green 4 months ago when I shucked mine.

The 10TB ones are a bargain, and i managed to snag one this morning. However, for simple backups or storing media this should theoretically suffice. Most people basically would use their external drives to keep their photos, files and movies, and its not likely they will be writing to it regularly for them to feel the difference
Care to share what are the differences between the good ones and the not so good ones?
Is it longevity? reliability? security? or just performance overall.
It is not the best price for 8TB external hard drive. I can see other brands (eg. WD) with similar capacity being sold at $160 or less.

Probably in USD. I have not seen many below $190 AUD for an 8TB.. around $20-25 per TB is the best rate atm now.

Yup, this and the 8TB WD are now the cheapest on the market sans the occasional Seagate 10TB
