What is the 5% that is missing?
The static on the badly tuned channels?
On mine those crap channel 10 stations, Peach and Bold I think, always say not available for streaming. Also some live sports won't be available due to separate streaming rights, e.g. this season's cricket wasn't available due to Kayo Sports having the streaming rights.
you can get a new shield cheaper than this refurb
I got a packet of Twisties for less than a shield.
Exactly and you get to run the full version of Kodi, not the gimped MrMC fork to comply with Apple's strict rules.
Does this turn my CRT tv into 4k?
Yes.
Awesome, I better not chuck it out then. 1080i to 4k here I come!
/s
Huh. What is CRT? :)
Like KFC, but less chickeny. And if you but a CRT bucket on your head, you'll break your neck.
if you get the apple tv 8k box it upgrade to HDR 8K
Really hard to understand why Apple shares are doing so badly for the last six months when they have such amazing products.
Great price. They have just gone through the quality assurance process twice now ;) have never had an issue with apple refurbs.
Whether it helps some people I did get Harvey Norman online through chat to drop their 32gb 4K to $229. However, I’d rather make use of my Wish gift cards but never got the chance to get Big W to match it.32GB looks to be sold out. Can no longer "Add to Bag"
32gb was sold out in the time it took me to google 'appletv 4k plex'.
snatched a 64gb, cheers!
Sorry, but that is not a deal. Regular price for the refurbished Apple TV at the Apple Store Online.
I’m also upset that I missed out on the 32GB.
Many refurbished products have limited stock on the Apple Store website. It does not mean that we should make a deal for every of them once they are back in stock.
You can try monitoring stock using https://www.refurb.me/en-au.
I’d prefer not to.
You can try …
too hard, I prefer spoon fed.
Great device. I bought a refurb 4K 32gb last time. You honestly can't tell.
I don't know if they replace the casing or something? They look brand new. From what I understand, Refurbs are when they take the guts out of an old one, replace only the necessary bits, and put it in a new case.
32GB OOS.
Thanks! Shame missed out on the 32gb.
whats good about the Apple TV these days?
Here's a paste of something I wrote in a previous apple tv post, it was about the non-4k model, could help:
In my opinion Apple TV is the only Apple product that’s not overpriced. I’ve got the 4K model. It’s fast, stable and easy to use. Supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. I do things like run BBC iPlayer (UK streaming) and Hulu (US streaming) beside the Aussie streaming services. It’s easy to adjust the DNS settings to make this happen and access to the other overseas app stores is easy to achieve and once that’s set-up it’s easy to switch back and forward. The Apple TV Kayo Sports is great too. I even think the remote is good (despite lots of negative reviews online about it). I got my 4K model for $200 using HN Amex offer. Whilst this one here is a good price I would find the extra $ for the 4K model, I believe it has a faster processor so should mean more longevity.
Any advantage over shield?
It really depends on what you value. The Apple TV is significantly newer and more powerful but for the end user the main benefits are slick apps, frame rate switching, colour space switching and Dolby Vision. Watching Netflix in 24p (without judder) is great!
On the other hand the Shield is fine too. Just not as refined. More apps and games though.
in what way is it 'not as refined"?
The main shield issues I'm aware of is motion judder on Netflix and quality issues when upscaling. Also last time I used it there was no SBS app for android TV, I don't know if this has changed.
EDIT: Have a look here for some of the IQ issues: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=332180
@tanksinatra: never seen any motion judder on Netflix and that link references negative stuff from 2016 about the shield ….
@petry: Unless you're manually changing the refresh rate of your TV every time you swap between film, NTSC, PAL TV etc., you're seeing judder.
Pretty sure it would be the same as any Android iOS comparison…
I love the Apple TV and find the apps for streaming extremely stable and fast; much more so than the apps on my TV, which are nowhere near as well supported by developers as the Apple ecosystem.
Finding it hard to justify an upgrade from my Apple TV version 1…
What features am I missing out on other than 4K?
I personally find the new swipe remote more annoying, don't play games on it and my current UI is nice a fluid.
NFI why I was negged for this genuine question??
because you're not selling it - the idea of needing a new one cough cough refurb
I just typed a huge explanation on my experience with Apple TV 3 vs 4. And lost everything I typed.
So basically no, newer Apple TV 4 UI is not as fluid as older Apple TV UI in my opinion.
Instead of fluid animation and UI you get a short loading screen when opening movie info which sometimes lags even with fast internet speeds (anything to do with iTunes Store).
This breaks up the fluidity, and I’m not sure if it’s real but that loading screen makes the UI seem sluggish in this regard.
Only when accessing iTunes content is the loading screen there, opening other apps is instant.Noticed slight glitches here and there although they rarely happen, they are there, and this is after 6 months of updates. A glitch that happens most often is the “Wishlist” tab missing in Movies App. Have to double click home button then close App (swipe up just like in iOS), then re-open App to fix it. Slightly annoying.
Especially when this is meant to be the newer more up-to-date model.Edit: just to clarify animations are fluid when set to 720p 60hz as I have (which is fine I rent movies in standard definition anyway to save a dollar or two each title, and on a 1080p TV from a distance I cannot tell any difference in quality). Lags a bit at 1080 when you scroll too fast. Overall animations are fluid and fine. It’s just the damn loading screen ruins the feel of it as a whole.
Also Siri is really dumb, I mean she’s a bit thick to begin with, but on Apple TV she is horrible. The most useful feature with voice recognition is searching for movie titles, actors directors etc. but she’s gets it wrong once in awhile, and I find she gets it right second time when you force an American accent (try strong southern accent, like you are from Texas).
Ask her “what’s 1+1?” Siri: ‘sorry I can’t help you with that’. Sometimes particular movie titles just don’t register as a movie title, even though you can find it through searching area in TV or Movies. Last title I remember was “I’m not there”, Siri can’t help. “I’m not there movie” Siri can’t help. Adding ‘movie’ or ‘film’ sometimes works, sometimes does not.I’ve heard someone comment Apple TV can be setup as a smart home hub, I don’t have any experience with this, she may be more capable in this regard.
32gb back in stock
and gone again.
I've purchased a couple of the refurb's, its completely fine you wouldn't know otherwise.
Excellent streaming device, if you've got a tv in a room without an aerial just use an Apple tv, download the Freeview app and it's 95% of regular live TV.
Infuse is also an excellent media streaming app if you don't want to run Plex/Plex server
