am after a small SUV. Wife loves the high seating position and will not consider a normal hatch or wagon.

    Neither.

    Thank me later.

    • Old model? No thanks.

XC40 … great car, a lot of bang for your buck at this price point. I've literally just been through this process with my sister in law and that's what she's gone with. I think she's done quite well for herself.

    • when I was told that AU stock is made in China I lost interest at that point.

      • +1

Where do you want it to be made?

      • -1

Any reference to back up ur claim that the volvo is made in china?

        • Just googling “Volvo XC40 made in China” will yield you a plethora of results.

        • Check VIN number and get Country production code.

    • +1

It's not bang for your buck though, is it? It's very expensive for such a small car. You could get the larger XC60 for a similar price, or you could get a much better and larger SUV from other brands.

      • See my reply below. Parking is a problem so size matters

  • all 3 are excellent choices.

    • Which 3? I had 4 in the poll

        Yes

Try out the Mercedes GLA. Fantastic car.

    • I reckon the GLA is a tad too small.

    • +1

Definitely not a fantastic car. Cheap interior materials, tiny size, front wheel drive bias even on the awd, and thoroughly outdated.

      • -2

The new GLA is a leap forward….

        • +1

There is no new GLA, the A class has been updated, but the GLA is the same car. You’ve got no idea what you’re talking about.

  • I wish I have the same dilemma :D

  • +2

E-Pace is a joke, don't bother with it and X1 is just BMW trying pull a fast one on the car clueless.

The remaining two is what I'd compare on, though the UX is borderline but saved by the price.

  • I love Volvo's and would normally vote the XC40, I initially wanted the XC60.

Unfortunately Volvo is owned by Geely and I cannot pay good money for a Chinese car.

    • +1

That's nuts. Most Volvos are built in Sweden or Belgium and the design and engineering is European, it's just Chinese funding. That being said, Volvos (ex sports) now all electric/luxury brand, Polestar, is exclusively built in China (or will be).

Had a look at the XC40 while shopping for a XC60 on the weekend.

I was quite surprised at the size and price point of the XC40, much closer in both to the XC60 than I would have thought.

Also very surprised of the included standard features.

Have you considered a XC60? I picked up a XC60 D4 Momentum for $61,500 with 1.9% finance and 3 years servicing included. Could have got metallic for free but didn't like black and didn't want to wait until June for one to be built. Got heated seats, auto fold down rear seats and boot tray free as they were on the car.

This is our second XC60, first one has done 145,000km. We're keeping the older one as it's still a great car.

Made in China but everything seems well built and I don't expect it to be any different to a European built car (previous XC60 was made in Belgium).

    • Is that finance deal in house or 3rd party?

      • In house Volvo Australia via Macquarie

U sure they r made in china? I did a carsales search n it is showing sweden is the country of origin

          • @Labrador: That's what I saw on carsales but Dealer advised it was China.

After seeing the build quality, I wasn't concerned with where it's made.

Stay away from European cars, unless you have plaently of money to waste on service, maintenance and repair

    • Except most include free servicing.

      • All new cars are a waste of money.

If you take it to an independent, servicing isn't much more than an Asian car.

They drive much better and I've been pretty happy with the reliabilty of them.

My personal experience comes from driving them over 600,000km in total (4 cars), a few repairs, all under $1,000 so can't complain. I usually service them myself as they get older.

Cars included, Opel, BMW, VW and Volvo.

Got the Volvo when my son was born, safest car available at the time. Still a very safe car by today's standard.

        • I doubt that it's still very safe by today's standards, cars that would be 5 stars 5 years ago get 1 and 2 stars these days.

And not all new cars are a waste of money. Many have minimal or no depreciation based off supply and demand, probably the only advantageous thing for car buyers, on this island, where supply for in demand models is limited. (But usually not at this price range, maybe with the exception of the new Wrangler).

@[Deactivated]: It's still very safe in the real world, regardless of the current rating.

Even 15 yo Volvo's are very safe, because they are designed to crash well in real world accidents, not just in a test in a controlled environment.

It won't ace the current test because it doesn't have lane support and marginal pedestrian safety. But in an accident I'd rather be in my 10 yo Volvo than 5 star 2017 ANCAP rated Hyundai i30 (or other small car).

            • @JimB: In a car on car accident, sure, mass+speed is king. There was a surgeon in Tasmania who drove a Hummer, because he wanted to put as much metal between him and the person he ran into, based off personal observations.

Personally, I'd get a larger car for that kind of money.

I'd try my luck and offer them $60k for a new F Pace

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/Jaguar-F-PACE-2018/…

They're not selling like hotcakes and JLR is in financial trouble right now, so they may be happy to shift the stock. Much better car and value than the models you are looking at. You could also get a lightly used 2018 model in the 50s, no probs.

You can also get a demo X3, (and the new model has had good reviews) in the 60s

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/BMW-X3-2018/OAG-AD-…

Again, much better car (I'm not a fan of 2wd SUVs, but at least this one is RWD - whatever you do, don't buy an FWD SUV, it's a joke).

    Demo GLC220

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/Mercedes-Benz-GLC22…

    $66k, offer them $60k, settle on $63k

Lightly used VW Tourag, full sized luxury SUV, same chassis as Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/Volkswagen-Touareg-…

$59k, offer them $55k, probably get it for that.

    • Not too keen on a large car as too hard to find parking. I live in the inner city area of Sydney so large car= pain to park

      • Get an electric bike instead. Park anywhere, get there 5x faster. :p

        • I'll also need to transport my family of 4. so bike is no good.

          • @Labrador: I’d say a Jag F Pace is perfect for you. Good room for 4, small external dimensions, much better value than all the cars you’ve listed.

          • @Labrador: get an electric cargo bike and a regular e bike - carry 2 adults and 3 kids with groceries easier, cheaper, faster. Save hundreds of dollars a week (this is ozbargain, right?)

      • You know that car spaces are the same size regardless of what car you buy? Parking a large car with sensors and cameras is a breeze.

        • A lot of street parallel parking required so size still matters

          • @Labrador: I have a large SUV which I parallel park everyday, it’s not an issue at all.

            • @[Deactivated]: If u know inner sydney well, a lot of spaces have been occupied by cars the size of corolla/i30/golf type of vehicle. If u have a large car it is v difficult to park in their spot they left.

I looked at the Xc40 after reading rave reviews. Wasn't wowed by it. Probably over hyped. Very little discount on the Xc40 as well but the dealer said they're happy to discount XC60 so it becomes much more attractive given almost all the options on the Xc40 are standard in the base XC60 which can be had for low $60k for a low km demo.

    • As mentioned above- I picked up a brand new XC60 D4 Momentum for $61,500 with 1.9% finance and 3 years servicing included over the weekend.

  • I have the X1, cant say i highly recommend it, the ride quality is sub par at best, and tyre noise is a joke…

Had a Volvo in the past the depreciation is horrible, much worse than BMW MB or Audi, and after many issues swore I would never buy another Volvo…
