With the arrival of winter now imminent, you can get ready to survive the cold… With a bit of help from Mistral 5 column oil heater. It is on clearance and marked down from $59 to $25.

Hard rubbish staple. Cant give these away.. Literally. Massively inefficient.

      Massively inefficient.

?? It will be basically 100% efficient.

Ineffective maybe (due to its size and type) but inefficient no.

      • Yeah these things are terribly inefficient as they need to burn electricity to generate the heat, whereas reverse cycle AC takes units of heat already in the atmosphere, compresses it, and pumps it inside. A process requiring far less electricity to accomplish (roughly 4 times less, variables depending). Not everyone can install air con though.

According to Choice it seems to be the most efficient portable option: https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/heating/electric-h…
If you are aware of a more efficient method do tell.

Probably because it's only a small 1000W heater. That won't put out much heat. If it's cold outside then it's just enough heat to keep a bathroom warm or to keep the chill off a bedroom overnight.

Inefficient it is not though. It's 100% efficient at turning electricity into heat. If you have a green tariff on your electricity account then it's environmentally friendly too as wind, solar and hydro do not burn fossil fuels to create electricity.

It won't cost much to run, it's much cheaper to install and it's much quieter than running a reverse cycle air conditioner.

        "Inefficient it is not though."

One of these things burns 2.5kw of power to produce 2.5kw of heat. An air conditioner with a rating of 2.5kw uses 0.52kw for the same output. That's 500% more efficient than the oil column heater.

Totally agree - if you have the ability to install reverse cycle split system, it'll cost far less to run than any plug in electric heater.

As a Mistral employee once told me, "You're only as good as your fans".

    "Arrival of winter now imminent"?

    We're having a heatwave!

And what has happened to Autumn this year?

    • We're having a heatwave!

      Not in Melbourne
