Sodastream Source Element - Black $111.96 Delivered (RRP $149) @ KG Electronic eBay

PORCH

Tried SodaStream last week, and have become a major fan.

Got this for my parents, they have been buying Soda water by the bottle, so this is a great way to ensure a more easily accessible supply of soda water, and I guess do a little bit for the environment.

Tips:
1. Chill the water before you put the gas in (cold water absorbs CO2 better)
2. Buy cordial, and just mix it in after you pour your drink (saves on buying the flavoured versions)

Note:
eBay seller has "SAVE UP TO 7% WHEN YOU BUY MORE"
So combine it with:
2x SodaStream White Carbonating 1L Spare Bottle
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2x-SodaStream-White-Carbonating-…

So you can have water already chilled when required.

These were $69 at Aldi a month ago
Cordial taste crap in these and usually makes a mess.

    • Damn, I've never head of Sodastream till last week.

That would have been an awesome deal.

      • +1

They were somewhat popular in the 80s and 90s before soft drink became cheap in the late 90s and 2000s. They’re popular again now but mainly for soda water due to the anti-sugar trend.

        • Also because the syrups cost more than just buying normal soft drink on special. Also I can't find a sugar free syrup that doesn't taste like crap.

      • +1

Bought it on the weekend for $89 from JB.

    • You should be able to still pick them up from Kmart at the same price too.

      • +1

That's a different version. Not sure what the Aldi one was.
Standard price for this one seems to be around $119. Good guys and JB have it for that. Kitchen warehouse have it for $117.

It's an okay deal, nothing amazing…

        • Fair enough, I'm not exactly sure what these all do differently, I just went for the cheapest one. The good thing is that most of these seem to be compatible with each other with all the bits and bobs though, I actually picked up the extra bottles from ALDI to use with my Kmart model.

          • +1

@Stoibs: Yeah they all do the same thing really, and bottles are interchangeable. It's usually just a different attachment or push mechanism.
The cheaper ones you screw the bottle in and push a small button.
This one looks similar to mine (Play) and you just push the bottle up and push the whole front section down (feels nicer).
Then there's the Power variety, that actually gets plugged in and you select the carbonation level to fizz.

    • +2

do you add cordial then carbonate? coz that would make a mess.

      • +1

I add a dash of cordial after I've poured the carbonated water into my cup. and just a quick stir.

      • do you add cordial then carbonate?

Nah you're supposed to carbonate and then add your mixer in afterwards

      • After carbonate, if it is a full sugar syrup slowly add down the inside so it doesn't fizz up.

    • The one at ALDI was the Sodastream Spirit

      • whats the difference?

Our recycle bin is nearly empty now since we started using Sodastream … so many plastic bottles less … :-)

    • Ouch, I bought glass bottles before that, no way would I have bought plastic bottles….

    • +1

I wish Pepsi etc would sell their real syrups for this, but they don't because of deals with bottlers :\ I so want to join the empty recycle bin crowd, especially given they're all 10c refunds now.

  • I picked this up from Costco a month ago for $100 and it came with extra 2 spare bottles in the pack. I love it, the Cola flavour is not too bad and best of all no plastic bottle waste.

  • Just ask at JB or Good Guys and they will do sub $100 easy. I went to Good Guys and asked if they price match, and they asked how much, said $89 and they matched without looking it up. Sticker was $119 (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/home-appliances/sodastream/sodastr…)

    have become a major fan

    Cool!

    • +3

Some say it was a breeze

      • OP certainly put sodastream up on a pedestal!

  • +1

The element has been the last favourite sodastream machine I've owned. It's just a manually operated machine with led lights with a very clunky mechanism. Unlike every other sodastream machine, the Element is not compatible with smaller 500ml bottles.

Go for the newer and cheaper Spirit, or the Play. Avoid the kmart model which has an old fashioned screw in connector.

    • Are you saying the new models don't have the screw in connector for the Co2 cannisters?

Should get myself a spare one then as I've just invested in the FreedomOne adapter

      • +1

They have the screw-in connection for the cannister. but a "Snap & Go mechanism for easy bottle insertion and removal"

        • Ah, I see. Thanks for straightening that out!

    • Spirit has terrible reviews, seems to be cheaper for a reason.

    • the Element is not compatible with smaller 500ml bottles.

The Element certainly is compatible with the smaller 500ml bottles - I have it and use them all the time (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/home-appliances/sodastream/sodastr…)

      • They do work, but the LEDs arent calibrated for use with 500ml bottles. In the manual it says "not compatible with 500ml" for this reason.

  • does anyone else find that when carbonating the drink, it doesn't go bubbly? I've had one for a few weeks now and out of 10 attempts, only 1 or 2 have been right. Other attempts have given a flat taste/feel. Is there a secret way to do it lol

  • Does it work out cheaper than buying home brand soda water.

    • +1

The gas refill is $19 to do an exchange and they claim 60 1l bottles for that, but apparently it's closer to 30 (anyone who has one care to comment?) So 30-60c per litre. 1.25l of sodawater at woolies is 75c, so 60c per litre. So pretty close depending on how much you actually get out of their gas refill. You can also get kits that convert them to just using a normal co2 bottle, which takes the per bottle price to bugger all, but you need to pay off the extra kit.

I do sodawater bottles at the moment, but considering one just to reduce waste, and have less chance of running out. I'll probably investigate the conversions too.

      • Interesting. What happens to your calculations if you factor in the 10c plastic bottle rebate? Does that sway that significantly to the bottled water’s favour (notwithstanding the labour, fuel etc. cost to deliver to a recycling centre)?

      • +1

I use a kegland system with their 6kg CO2 bottle. I should be able to get a year of non stop refills until I need to refill the bottle again for about $50

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=185&v=7bPfxY2SUf…

The hardware was pricey to begin with but even then the cost per little was cheaper than getting refills at $20 each.

Once I refill the 6kg bottle. it should work out to be about 5c per litre

        • darn just noticed yorto's already commented about kegland below.

I guess when you enjoy a product, you want to spread the word. =D

  • can anyone say if this tastes as good as Schweppes Soda Water? that's the key for me. no Brand soda water is just not as good, so wondering anyone that can tell
    the difference has tried both.

    • It doesn't taste like soda water at all. It's just fizzy water plus whatever flavour you add.

my wfife got me one to stop buying sparkling mineral water but it's just not the same, I just drink less in general now.

      • +2

It is soda water. It is not mineral water. They are two different things.
The taste of soda water will depend on the taste of the water you are carbonating. The taste of mineral water will depend on the minerals that are being added.

if you don't want the big c02 bottle laying around. Best investment if you get right into sodastream.

Just need to find a place that does cheap syrups.

    • Just need to find a place that does cheap syrups.

Yes, refilling from Kegland bottle works for me the best.

I am looking for good syrup (might be not that cheap).

Unfortunately sourcing original Coca-Cola syrup is impossible (for me) in Australia.
Soda stream discontinued Dr.Pepe long time ago (their version of Dr Pepper, it was really good).

I am struggling to find syrups I like.

  • I remember the syrups back in the 80's, at the time they were the bomb and tasted awesome in the cold glass Soda Stream bottles.
    From Wikipedia:

In August 2018, Sodastream agreed to be acquired by PepsiCo for $3.2 billion.

    That's a lot of soda…
