Last Exit before Toll Road Was Closed, Will I Get Charged for Using Toll?

Update: I will be charged for the toll as the operator mentioned that they have given notice to public via their website and other outlets and it is our responsibility to check them before we leave. Not thoroughly impressed but can't do much. The cost of trip is $31.41. For people who think i am not updating you guys right away, sorry about that but i am at work and called them during break. Appreciate your feed suggestions, comments and feedback. Cheers

Original Post: - Hi guys, i just faced this situation few mins back and not sure what steps to take next so would like to hear if anyone had a some experience and what can i do for this situation.

Basically, i was coming back home and the last exit before Toll was closed due to road works (Bell St, Bulla Rd in Victoria). There weren't any such signs that alarmed for the road work ahead and take previous exit as well.

I had no option but to continue driving till the next exit and I was probably not the only one as the exit was very busy for this time of the night.

I don't have the key tag or pass either for this car, although got it for the other car.

So just wondering what happens in this situation? Anyone else had a same experience and can suggest what steps to take in order to avoid the toll or is this one have to be paid?

Looking forward for suggestions. Cheers

Call them and ask for it to be waived

    • Call them and ask for it to be waived

Shouldn't be any issue at all to waive it IMO. They could easily check to see the roadworks there stopping OP from exiting before traveling on toll road.

Most of these things have like a '1 free get out of jail fine free options. Ie. They will waive it as a 1 off, but if it happens a second time, they'll contest your excuse and make you either pay or go to court.

  • So just wandering what happens in this situation?

You travelled on a toll road, you have to pay. Either via day pass, linked account, so if the rego isn't assigned/linked to anything, then via a 'reminder' notice in the mail.

There weren't any such signs that alarmed for the road work ahead and take previous exit as well.

I'm sure there was road works telling you Bell St was closed, you just didn't link the two.

what steps to take in order to avoid the toll

Call linkt/Citylink and explain your issue to them, see what they have to say. Only they can waive it. But your reason for driving on a toll road, is meh at best.

Worst case, buy a day pass, its $18/day and cheaper than a fine.

There were no signs on the Tulla Fwy to say there were any roadworks on Bullla Rd or Bell St until you got the Bulla Rd exit, by then you couldn't do anything.

      • Were you in the same situation?

        • -1

Superfly just corroborated OSA claim that there were no warnings of road works.

All we need now is a dashcam video to put this issue to bed.

        • +2

Was in the same situation last night. No signs or warnings and forced onto the tollway. Looked like many people were caught off guard.

@OSA I online chatted them last night and they said they'll be happy to waive it if I get a notice. But will be calling them today to confirm.

@JimmyF Don't want to start an argument but for someone who wasn't there at the time, I don't think you have any right to comment or criticise people.

            @Humble:

Don't want to start an argument but for someone who wasn't there at the time, I don't think you have any right to comment or criticise people.

Been down that road MANY MANY times and they ALWAYS have signs up for exit closes etc on the elect signs or portable signs.

The fact is, most people driving around with thie head somewhere it shouldn't be, don't read the signs or take notice, then scream they're not 'warned'.

The OPs issue is simple, call up and request the toll to be waived or buy a day pass.

            • @JimmyF: I'm not disputing about what OP should do. Your semi-aggressive tone of "I'm sure there was road works telling you Bell St was closed, you just didn't link the two." was unwarranted and didn't contribute anything. Yes, I have been down there many times during their peak construction period and yes, they had many portable signs warning of the roadworks. The fact is this time was different with three different people including myself coming to the same conclusion. That is all. Conversation ended.

            • @JimmyF: They don't always have signs. Happened to me as well.

        • It happened to me about 6 months ago in the same spot. Thankfully had car registered so just copped the one exit fee rather than fight it. I really couldn’t be bothered.

Also, this is where the sign fell onto the woman’s car. They can’t fix signs into place, as if they’re gonna tell people when roads are closed.

  • This really doesn’t justify a post here. Wait and see if you get a toll notice in the mail. If you do, call and complain.

I would be more inclined to ring them now and explain the situation
just my thoughts but i feel it would be easier to waive a toll before the notice is sent

Oh, something happened. Let me type a thousand-word-post on forum for help.

Have you ever considered picking up the phone / going to the toll website to get a straight and more official answer?

    • +4

I tried to call right away but they only operate between certain hours and i am not sure why it's not a good idea to ask for suggestions if people might have gone through same situation in the past?

      • -1

Then why not wait till they are open before posting? No one here can help you or waive the toll.

      • +1

but they only operate between certain hours

I note that you aren't an OzBargain Premium member, are you prepared to pay the Ozbargain after hours and call out fees?

      • If you think their response is unsatisfactory you can contact the relevant ombudsman and make a complaint.

        • Seems a poor thing to go to any industry body / ombudsman over. The toll operator waiving the fee would be a good will gesture at best, and OP certinaly isn't entitled to have it waived.

          • @pais: I mostly agree however OP is in the best position to determine whether they received a satisfactory response or not. That's why I gave the option of ombudsman.

I had a similar thing happen to me. I initially didn't get a satisfactory response so I asked to talk to a manager and they gave me a refund. It's in their training to brush you off while reading off a script and hope you go away.

            • @tranter: Linkt had nothing to do with the road works on the road (that they don't own, control or charge for), therefore have no obligation to credit him. Going to an industry body over it is just frivolous.

              • @pais: Transurban owns CityLink. Road works that happens on their roads may be their responsibility.

                • @whooah1979: @whooah1979:

Right, but do Transurban own the road that failed to display a closure sign? If not, again - not relevant.

              • @pais: That's what they want you to think.

        • Who is the relevant ombudsman in this case?

  • +5

I was forced onto a toll road once due to a road closure. My tag was charged. Unfortunately at the time online message boards were strictly for more serious matters. I patiently waited for the tolling office to open on Monday to call them, needless to say they waived the charge.

  • +1

what did Linkt say when you rang them on 13 33 31 as they are open 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week?

  • I don't understand how it is costing you $31.41 for driving along the Tulla and missing the exit at Bell/Bulla and taking the next exit?

According to Linkt's website, it is $6.35 for a 24 hour Tulla pass.

    • Exactly but there is admin charge plus all the crap $17 for the weekend pass plus admin charges = $31.41

  • There is no way it costs $31.41, if you can't get off at Bulla Rd then the next exit is Brunswick Rd and you will only travel under 1 tolling gantry which costs about $3 or at worst $17 for weekend pass.

    • Exactly but there is admin charge plus all the crap $17 for the weekend pass plus admin charges = $31.41

      • You must have chosen the wrong options as when it happened to me it was definitely $6.33 all up. That was in September so I guess it has gone up by a whole 2c!

  • I once sold my car to a dealer and later got a citylink fine for not paying tolls for travel after i had sold it. Asked citylink to waive it and sent them proof i didnt own the car. They rejected it. If thats their mentality then good luck waiving the fine op.

When they were renovating the tullamarine freeway I got screwed over so many times coming back from the airport, they open a different exit everytime. ended up going to the city and coming back. nothing you can do, they probably do it on purpose to pay for the renovation.
