Best phone $200-$300

Hi All,

Need to buy a new phone for a parent.

Just needs to basics good enough to watch some videos, instant message and take the odd picture but ideally as simple to use as possible.

I have access to JB and Good guys commercial pricing so that helps.

Thinking Oppo A3, Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro or nokia 3.1 are probably good starting points but keen to hear other suggestions.

I'd really prefer something I can pick up locally as current phone is playing up and much easier to deal with if anything goes wrong.

Value for money budget phone, would recommend the Xiaomi's. E.g. something like this https://www.banggood.com/Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-5-Dual-Rear-Camer… but a better price.

    • ^^^This^^^ Moto G6 Play
The Moto G range are good value and for the most part just work.

Local warranty, great battery, B28, stockish Android = simple to use.

    ^ Moto G6 is a good option.

Dropped my Xiaomi in a river and got a similar spec Motorola phone. It's no contest. Xiaomi win by a country mile: much snappier, it never stalled, better battery life, better OS features etc. Can't wait to go back to Xiaomi. Value for money has to be Xiaomi.

      Username checks out.

    • Not saying that your experience is not true for you, but I have Moto G5 + & Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 both with QC625 & 3GB ram and both used to run Android 7 at the same time. Both similar performance and would say although they both had their pros and cons for me, I liked both and still do now.

    • Get a rugged smartphone. You won't have to worry about it when it gets dropped in the river.

  • Samsung J5 pro

  • I can see you are in Sydney. This place is in Wolli Creek which is next to the airport.

I have the regular version of the A2, not the lite version, but I have been very happy with it

    • The A2 & A2 Lite are both great choices ( as long as you don't need B28 ).

If you can get one locally with decent warranty, then that could be a good choice for your parent.

another vote for the Moto G6, I have the G5s plus & I love it

    • Thanks. It's very cheap so could be a great option and easy to grab from big W.

Do you find its sturdy? Assume I'll need a case for it.

Do you find it quite simple to use?

      • Mine is a metal back (I just checked it with my teeth, so it is metal), so it is strong. I just use a case that goes around the back & a screen protector, that is fine for me (I have only had a mobile for less that a year, so I am newish). I bought the Moto as it doesn't come with bloatware, so that makes it fast without all the junk other phones put on to slow it down. I am very happy with my 5Gs plus. I don't know if the G6 is the same metal back. The best advice is to go to android authority & read the review they have on the G6 (bookmark the site), if I was to get a phone now, it would be the G6

  • Go the Samsung. My J3 still functions as good as it did 2-3 years ago when I bought it.

    • I think the j5 may be within budget

      • At the risk of sounding like a Harvey Norman salesperson, my mum has a J5 too and she thinks it’s great.
The J5 also has a much nicer screen than the J3

        • Literally every salesperson i have interacted in the last week re: shoes, mattress and phones has used that classic tactic. Do they seriously they we believe them

I'm waiting to see what prices we can get on the Samsung M20 when it releases on Feb 5th https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9506 but its looking like its going to be sub-$250

    • Looks promising, but no B28.

Is this phone mostly destined for the Asian/Indian market as Samsung usually has full band support for Australian models including B28?
