First post, and I hope it gets pegged* to the main page!
At BCF yesterday I noticed this wanderer tent on sale. Whilst the $499 RRP is rather optimistic, the cheapest price I can find elsewhere is $356. For all in tents* and purposes, this is a bargain for a decent quality 10 person tent.

Happy camping everyone!

  • Awesome find!

  • It is on the first page. Well done.

    don't forget your cashback!

Do you have to camp with Tightarse to be eligible?

  • Can these use on beaches? Looking one for the beach!

    • I thought that you could use any tent on the beach, you just need to get sand pegs?

      • That is correct!
Sand pegs can also be used in the snow

        • +4

          Where can I get snow?

    • I bought the Wanderer Torquay yesterday which ended up being $75 delivered from Rays Outdoors. Has good reviews and cheaper than BCF. They price match though so if they have it in a store near you, you should be able to get them to match the Rays offer.

      • I own this tent and have used for most of this summer. It's a great tent but gets quite warm if you close the windows. I use a sarong to hang on the outside and keep the windows open.

        • when you say windows - do you mean the front of the tent where to enter from?

          • +7

@CheapSticks: "A window is an opening in a wall, door, roof or vehicle that allows the passage of light, sound, and air."

          • @CheapSticks: There are windows that zip open on the sides

            • @fatgypo: thanks - in that case "gets quite warm if you close windows" shouldnt be an issue i suppose !

    • Honestly better getting a beach gazebo. Tents get too hot and are a hassle crawling with all the sand.

Wander if these go up as quick as the Coleman instant-up tents… ? Looking for quick setup / dismantle.

If you want a cheap Instant Up style tent, keep an eye out at Aldi. They sell them a few times a year.

I'm very fussy with tents and spend too much time in the past looking into them…

      RE COLEMAN:
I own two Coleman instant up's. A "square" 6 person and a "rectangular" 10 person. The main issue is with the larger 10 person as the fly sheet MUST be removed from the frame in order to properly erect the tent each time. When it comes time to putting this tent up, the frame goes up quick but re-installing the fly sheet is a PITA. The fly sheet also requires about a million pegs to be placed in the ground. The smaller square tent doesn't have this problem (just be very careful when packing the tent up that the fly sheet does not go inside the frame as it will pinch the fly sheet and put a hole it in.

      RE DOME:
Prior to these instant up's, I had a caribee dome which I was extremely happy with and is much faster and smaller than the instant up Coleman. However, we wore out the floor and they no longer make them and I gave the instants a go. The IMPORTANT thing to look for in a dome is how the tent attaches to the poles. In most cases the pole will slip into a tube of material. What you REALLY REALLY want is to limit the length of that tube. The good tents have "tubes" that are only about half to one third of the length of the pole. The bad ones are like +75% and you will spend a lot of time wrestling the damn things into place. The good ones use far more clips to attach the tent to the frame which are MUCH easier to manage than those tubes.

I'd go have a look at this tent in the shop. $189 is money you could always put towards a decent tent and not a headache.

p.s. I never feel good about wanderer. It's BCF's home brand. They rotate models depending on what's available from China and it's one of those brands that can run with sub-standard products as BCF can bin in tomorrow and start fresh with another… whereas someone like Coleman rely on their brand being reputable and withstanding the test of time with public opinion.

        Nice essay,
I have a Coleman Instant Up tent with 3 rooms (it's probably the 10 person model) and have similar experience to your description of the tent. While the "instant up" part is nice attaching the outer (fly) is laborious. We did have a warranty issue with the original tent and Coleman (Rays Outdoor) replaced it, no hassles. It's a great tent when setup, it handles the rain and wind well. Except when you have the verandah setup, it catches the rain and doesn't let the water flow off, it also catches the wind, making it vulnerable to poles, pegs, tent flaps and guy ropes flying off. But it's lovely to sit undercover outdoors, and you can store less vulnerable items under the verandah such as eskies, chairs etc. It's a great tent but the "instant" up is a little misleading!!

        • Its a little misleading until you see someone with a large regular tent and you easily beat them in putting up the tent!

We just got back from a weekend camping with our Coleman Instant Up NorthStar and I don't find putting the fly up an issue at all. Mrs and I, just throw it over in a few seconds and then yes it takes some time to peg it down (about 10 mins max). But when the thunderstorm hit and we were dry and comfortable inside, no complaints from me.

I might get roped into this one.

    • +1

Agree, especially for this price. The previous price seems rather inflated.

      • +2

Maybe a pole is required on this post?

    • +1

Better zip in and get one.

    • I will peg this for later consideration

  • Bought 2 of these by accident… after pay said error so paid again with paypal…

confirmation for both in email and wont let me login on website 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • I would try calling the store (if pickup) or head office.
Something similar happened to me with The Good Guys . In store contacted their 'online team' and sorted it out for me.

  • Looks like this is actually your 4th post?

That business on Cato Neimoidia doesn't count.

  • cheap material and dome shape is not worth as you cannot use the two ends of the tent. Also it's a single room. BCF marks this price every second month. Better to go with Cabin style tent if you are not camping alone.

    • +1

IMO this tent is better as a single room. Tents of this shape / size are commonly 3 rooms but the side rooms end up being tiny and don't allow for a big spread when sleeping at night while the middle room is inconvenient because it's a thoroughfare. With this tent you could stow all your junk on one side and have the other side free for sleeping.

After various configurations I settled on a 2 room where each room is big on it's own. One room is a "sleep only - kid's don't play here and trash this" room, the other is a room for stowing all the stuff and for the kids to play in.

  • +1

Thought it was a double roomed tent at first but unfortunately not. That second room to shove the kids into is a godsend.

    The search continues.

10 people? One hell of a camping orgy.

        Giggity giggity

    • +1

The basic rule of tents is this - halve the number. So a 10 person tent will, in most circumstances, accommodate 5 people. Why?

Because, in reality, a 10 person tent only fits 10 people if they all want to sleep directly side by side and with no bags in the tent. Which is, shall we say, uncommon. :)

      • +1

And if you want to be comfortable, make it a quarter.

a 10 person tent can fit three people comfortably.

It matters if you go for more then 1-2 days.

        • My girlfriend and I sleep in the back of a Ford Wagon when we go on road trips. She suggested a tent this time, but resisted any of my attempts to try it out in the backyard before we left. Sorry babe, I'm not going into the great unknown without testing my gear first. I know the car doesn't leak…

      • Agreed - or just check out the dimensions 6 x 2.4m, thats a solid size for under $200 and 2.1m high no ducking around and gymnastic efforts while changing.

I've got the Coleman 9CV and love it, weighs twice as much which perhaps says something about the quality difference but I'm sure this one would do the job just fine!

  • +3

for all in-tents and purposes this is a good deal.

This bargain is very in tents.

Seems pricey (although more structurally sound) than Sydney flats (apartments) though….

  • Can you stand up in this?

    • Depending which part of the tent, and only if you are shorter than 2.1m

Ten people in a tent? Which level of hell is this?

  • Should fit about three normal size adults comfortably LOL.

    • …or one ozbargainer & snacks

    • +2

I just used this tent for the first time over the weekend. It can easily fit 4 people comfortably. By that I mean 2x queen size beds & space for luggage.

      • How many semi-trailers do you take for your camping gear?

  • +1

I know very little about tents. But I bought this tent last week and used it over the weekend. It was great. Well designed. Easy to set up. No experience to compare it to; but definitely happy with the purchase.

  • Good deal for new. Dont forget to check gumtree quickly if you don't mind 2nd hand though, some insane deals to be had on occasion

  • +1

I'm sure this tent is alright, but take $500 rrp with a grain of salt. Anaconda and BCF have a habbit of quoting ludicrous rrp so the specials look 'amazing'. They often stock exclusive brands so you can't easily compare prices with other stores.

  • Can anyone provide advice on this sort of tent - https://www.bcf.com.au/p/wanderer-tourer-extreme-250-touring…

Good value for money, if not whats better thats similar?

    • I'm not sure why you would pay so much money for a small tent that I would find too small for two people.

You can pay half the price for a tent twice the size and replace it twice as often.

  • I’m not sure if anyone mention this. If you’re not a member of BCF and you joined today, like me, you also get a further $20 off any purchases over $100. So, you could get it for $169.
