    Free Fee

So you purchase a Fee for free ????

    • +4

I came here just to make sure someone was as curious as me. Even happier it's JV.

  • +64

    $88 for $88

    Yay

    • +1

points on your credit card + interest earn due to delay payment + cash advanced without cost/convenience to use at places like ALDI :)

      • +2

U also get points (and that interest earn) by paying what u want to buy with ur cc directly. Apart from Aldi part, this is false statement

        • +1

Not necessarily the same points. Think Amex cards, or cards where you earn a higher rate for supermarket spend (or both).

          • -1

@jasonb: The extra Amex points you earn is offset by the effort of buying and using these eftpos cards, keeping track of the remaining balances etc.

            • +1

@capslock: Might be worth it for some. I get a lot of value from these points (and trying to stockpile as much as I can before they slash the rate in April!). Still up in the air whether I can be bothered smashing this one though.

    • 88 upvotes for this $88 free fee card.
Let's keep it like that for longer

  • +7

What exactly is the bargain here? You pay $88 and get a card to spend $88. You're not really saving any money.

    • +16

Use it at places that don't accept AmEx so you don't miss out on points.

      • +2

I can just use my Mastercard and get 55 days interest free, plus points.

        • +6

You are getting less points compared to using an Amex

        • +10

Get interest free days and more points on AmEx. No surchage on EFTPOS in ALDI.

        • +9

This is great for those places that charge extra for Amex + you get 3x the points for Amex at woolies.

      • +3

        eg. ALDI, Costco, IKEA.

    • +1

You get to keep the plastic pig card for free

    • It’s a bargain because your getting the bonus $88 + 88 luck. These numbers are the bonus’s.

      • +3

        I'd rather get two x $44

        • +2

Do that and gift them to Chinese, whom will kick your ass later for the gift.

          • @AussieGargain: 4 is bad luck
            8 is good luck
Or whatever superstition is in vogue these days.
For some reason 13 is my lucky number while others avoid it.

    • -1

Also good to use and keep 3 or so dollars on for use with various free trials. Won't need to go through the process of cancelling billing.

      • +3

        billing via EFTPOS?

        • Yeah what that doesn't make sense.

    • Even better. Buy this card on Diners Citibank companion to earn 2 points per dollar and then spend it on places that charge surcharges.

      • Plat edge 3 points.

      • Think there's an Amex one for that, David Jones one from memory. 3x points on supermarket spend, works out to value of 2.25 point if I remember correctly.

  • -1

Are they reloadable, that would be a bargain

    • No.

      • Still kicking myself I missed out on that reloadable Coles Mastercard 😭

        • +1

          How does one kick oneself?

          • @haru: I've seen it… a mate not just kicked himself but kicked himself in the nuts, hard.
He was down for some time.

            Schadenfreude… oh how we laughed

          • @haru:

            How does one kick oneself?

Even a fatty can kick his other leg.

        • I wouldn't - I think I did get one of those but Coles cancelled them eventually (as in, deleted the product). They were nice enough to refund the $20 or so I had on it which I wasn't smart enough to spend in time (after I raised a support call).

It was a nice idea though!

  • -5

    Yeah nonsense waste of time

  • Presume no WR points.
    Good luck charm?

    • +2

You are right, no WR points earned. It is a great deal for Woolworths group staff or someone needs a few 4c/l off fuel vouchers.

      • i thought buying gift cards didn’t qualify you for obtaining petrol vouchers

        • +4

Buying a gift card of $30+ value qualifies you for a petrol voucher in both Coles and Woolworths.

      • +2

Do Woolies group staff get 5% off?

        • I believe only on specific store card like ebay, jb hi fi and the sort.

          • @highdealer: No Woolworths staff gets discount for everything except cigarettes and tobacco.

            • @ScuseMe: Oh wow, team benefits card include stuff like gift cards and mobile recharges? I had no idea that's awesome - it's basically a $4.40 profit!

            • @ScuseMe: You dont get a discount if you are buying the fee free Wish gift card either, so i that is why i am not sure if you can get a discount on this.

              • @highdealer: Who told you this? You get discounts regardless if the item is on the catalogue. Source : employee.

                • @ScuseMe: Correct. Regardless of the item, Staff discount would get you 5% discount including Wish gift cards

                  • @SydOzber: You wish, discount doesn't work on wish giftcard.

        • +1

Ill try it out on Wednesday and report back. We normally do get 5% discount on all gift cards apart from wish cards inside a Wooloworths

  • +3

The purpose is to buy credit card points.

  • +1

Can you still buy these with Wish cards?

    • +16

      You Wish ?

    • +2

      Nope.

      • +2

        That's just wishy washy marketing.

A bit like the free fee, or perhaps, a fee-free promotion!

But is that $5.98 fee really free, or is it only free with your purchase of this deal?

    • +1

Worth a try and if it's true then it's worth an up vote.

      • They changed even the most obscure machines to make sure that doesn't happen. Someone told me places like port Lincoln still may allow it and this was 2 months ago

Is everyone celebrating Chinese New Year?

    • +4

      Not everyone.

    • +6

      It's Lunar New Year!

    • +1

Only Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year.

    • Never, it’s LUNAR New Year.

      • -3

Chinese celebrate CNY isn’t because of Lunar New Year per se. It’s to celebrate for scaring away a Yaoguai (a monster) called “Nian” using fire crackers. Hence playing fire crackers in China. This tradition has existed for more than 4000 years. If celebration involves with colour red, 12 zodiac animals, fire crackers, yes it’s Chinese New Year. Without? It’s Lunar New Year, which’s nothing to celebrate about.

        • +1

There is a tradition which is fair enough. However, please remember that there are other parts of Asia (and non-Asians) that celebrate LNY.

Can you load an extra $12 onto it to round up to $100? This would make it easier getting the cash back out of ATMs. Obviously only applies if your looking to manufacture points.

    • Obviously only applies if your looking to manufacture points.

How many times per day could you go through this cycle I wonder?

    • +2

Can you use these at ATMs?

      • +3

        Nope.

    • -1

If you can use it at ATM, well can't you just use it at service desk of woolies and get $88 out withdrawal ?

      • +3

        Can't get cash out.

  • +3

They have some limited uses … basically, buy with an amex and use them where ever amex isn't accepted. You'll get the higher point earn. It's not much, but it's something. You can't use them online, so it's only places with a physical terminal. School fees are one place that come to mind.

    • +2

You can't use them online, so it's only places with a physical terminal

Are these different to the normal $50/$100 eftpos cards? I had no difficulty using those ones online on eBay.

      • +5

How do you use an EFTPOS card online? Do you mean pre-paid visa/mastercard?

EFTPOS is different to those cards. You can only use them on physical terminals and select 'savings'. Merchants typically don't surcharge for using savings.

        • +2

Ahh my bad, I was mistaken with the Only1 VISA card! Thanks for the info.

        • +3

Good to use them in Aldi then.

          • +6

@povertytrap: Yup - just have to be careful with the total. Aldi doesn't allow split payments, so you need to break up your cart into the right amounts.

As for the small balance left over, woolies self serve checkouts let you break up the payment in pretty much any combination you can think of.

            • @salmon123: I think ALDI allows split payment now since ALDI has its own giftcard. There is a situation when split payment is required to use the remaining balance.

              • @Neoika: You can get amazon gift cards in any value - I have done this a few times for cards with a few dollars left

              • @Neoika: Interesting - good to know.

      • +1

You must've had a Mastercard or Visa gift card because online payments don't use the EFTPOS network.

Edit: sorry didn't see reply above

  • Coles should do the same.

  • Oh wow, you get $88 for $88, what a huge saving.

    • +3

plus 264 points on some cards … which is like free money for some people

  • -1

Can these cards be replaced if lost? I don't have time to do my own research.

    • +5

No. But I guess you don’t have time to confirm it

      • Cheers for that. I found a link but I'm too flat out to read it right now.

Remind me to thank you later!

    • Replace if lost? Ain't nobody got time for that!

  • is it a fee if its free

  • Do these need to be registered before use or are they like the Coles ones that are anonymous? Good for seedboxes if so.

  • Yaaaay, cash advance but interest free for 7 weeks :)………..then :(

    • +2

Not a cash advance because your card provider doesn't know what you spent the $88 specifically on.

  • +1

Thanks op, I have been waiting for this one. I was so disappointed when they didn't offer it last Chinese New Year. Great opportunity for me to spend big on my amex platinum edge before they reduce the points earn in April.

    • hey yoyo6 I'm thinking about doing the same thing and I have a platinum edge too, but how will you use those 88 cards?

      • +1

The $88 ones are a bit of a hard amount to use. I try to use the full amount at once so I wait until I buy something where they don't take amex like costco and pay the first $88 with the card. I find if I only spend part of it, it becomes hard to keep track of so I always use the full amount at once. I had a big dentist bill recently and paid with a bunch of cards and they weren't too happy with me but too bad.

    • also compare this 88 card with other gift cards, which ones is better? cause sometimes I see woolsworth has like 10% off Kogan cards and they will sell on ebay or gumtree i think,

    • I have a platinum edge too but confused with the points degrading. They sent me a letter saying I still earn 3 Pts per dollar at supermarkets after April though? But I have a qantas card and that has devalued on points earning

      • +1

Points on Plat Edge remain same but value cut in half when converting to velocity, etc. Sadly will be ditching what was a great credit card after April 1.

        • Not in context but any card u recommend AMEX wise? Thought that was the best earn rate but I’m a new kid on credit card point stuff.
